Audible Wants To Hear From You!
Audible contacted several of use that had expressed interest in having Audible content on their Clies. We received sample wav files representing the quality that could be expected from them. I asked if I could post the files for this forum to listen to and comment on. They agreed to allow this and asked that I include this staement to preserve their good working relationship with Sony

"The Sony CLIE provides two different methods for applications to play audio. The method used by the Sony music player is designed for high quality. Unfortunately this method cannot be used by Audible, for technical reasons. Audible is able to use the other method, but the audio playback is of lower quality.

Audible has created two examples of their content in WAV file format, at the quality level of this second method. They are interested in your feedback on the playback quality, specifically whether, as a paying customer, you would find this quality to be acceptable. You can listen to the samples on your PC, ideally with the same headphones you use with your CLIE, and send
your feedback to cliecomments@audible.com."

Please let them know what you think!

One person on this forum stated that he has a TT which Audible supports. He says that transfers between the Audible Manager and the TT device are agnonizingly slow. This is something that should be brought to their attention.

Email them with your opinions/comments at cliecomments@audible.com.

Here are links to the files.

These links are not working. Seems like the "..." found it's way into the actual hyperlink.

The first link is http://www.pagemasterwebdesign.com/nytimes_clie.wav

I'm not sure about the second one.

Ocell,

Your right, the links don't work, but yours did.

The quality is nasally sounding at best and I don't like it!

Okay, the second link works now, but it still sounds a computer talking, so I don't intend to send any email to Audible. I don't want to discourage those who might want this service, because I find it unacceptable.

Doesn't sound too bad to me. The sound is nasally and a little scratchy, but is workable.

In which file on the memory stick should these files be placed? I've placed them in MS SOUND and MS Audio. In neither place are they recognized by the audioplayer!!!

No man. These are just .wav files. Listen to them on your desktop. They are examples of what you can expect.

I questioned the use of .wav files too but found out that the end result of the audible conversion to Clie would be a proprietary file foemat. If you like I can convert them to .mp3 files and post them.

Those clips aren't awful. Hard to tell if extended listening would be annoying, but I doubt anyone eager for Audible content on their Clie' would be overly upset by the quality shown in the samples.

I converted a 21 hour Stephen King audio book from Audible. It took me hours with Goldwave via trial and error. The quality was either their #2 or #1 format. The sound had a very metallic sound to it but I got used to it very quickly. For audio books the AM/Telephony sound is OK by me. Of course that would not be acceptable if I wanted to listen to some JT but that is not what they are selling. Please give a vote to Audible by emailing them with your comments.

I listened to these files and compared them to formats 1,2,3.
To my ears (they get tested every 6 months because of my employment) the test files sound between format 1 & format 2. I usually listen to format 3 as the best compromise between quality and file size.

I find them perfectly acceptable for listening to audible.com content. We're not talking about high bitrate sampled MP3's for audiophile music listening.

If this is the only way to get audible.com content on my NX70V, and the only format quality available, I'd be MORE than perfectly content with it.

That's fine, but it's not for me. I'll do without as the audio sound is very irritating to me, sorry.

I understand what you find acceptable is different that what I find acceptable, so I'm not arguing with you. I appreciate that you decided to abstain, but if you're a paying audible.com listener, then you have every right to cast your 'vote'.

As a paying audible.com premium listener and an NX70V owner, I feel that any audible.com capability is better than none at all.

Audible relpied to the issue of the transfer speed, see below:

Tungsten T transfer speed:
transfer to the SD card can only be done via HotSync, and it is very very
slow. Palm knows this but has no solution planned. We will be allowing the
user to choose 'SD card reader/writer' as a workaround in a future release.

I thought the sound quality was okay for me but I can see that it may not be accepted by others. This is what I wrote to them.
