I bought a new CD yesterday and ripped to MP3s to enjoy on my MS and Clie. The MP3s I've been using on MS I already had and are all at 128kbps and work fine. So yesterday I thought I would try the 96kbps rate and get a few more songs on the MS and after ripping, uploading and trying to play them I got the "copyright or corrupt file" message, and they wouldn't play. So I deleted everything off the Clie and PC, recorded (using the same PC software) them at 128kbps, installed and they play fine on the Clie Audio Player. Can anyone explain this?

May be it has something to do with what software you use to rip the MP3 from CD. I use RealJukebox at 96kbps w/o any problem. For 128MB, I can put 42 tracks (174 minutes).

I'm using Windows Media Player 9 with Intervideo's XPack MP3 plugin.

96kbps works fine for me too, and I use music match. I have the Cyberlink mp3 plug-in for media player9 but, I haven't used it yet.

The audio player will only play MP3s with a sampling frequency of 44.1 KHz - this is the only sampling frequency that will work. The bit rate can be 32-128 kbps although some people have been successful with a higher bit rate.

Some of the ripping software I've used automatically adjusts the sampling frequency based on the bit rate. I'll bet your problem was that at 96 kbps the sampling frequency was less than 44.1.

jaylow48,

That does sound like the logical explanation. I'll toy with that next chance I get as Windows Media Player does allow you to change the default sampling frequency. I was aware of the min. bit rate for audio player, but not the sample frequency. In the short term, I got the 2-disk CD set I bought to fit on my 128M MS at the 128kbps rate anyway. Appreciate your suggestion.

FWIW, I had the same problem - until I changed to an Average 96kbps bitrate from a Variable 96kbps bitrate.

I'm using WinLame.

Hope this helps,
