View Full Version : Why the UX50 gets better with time.....

These are some of the reasons why I think the ux50 gets better with time:)

1) Since you cant buy it off the shelf anymore, its becoming a more "rare" device, therefore it will keep its wow factor.

2) Greater capacity Media sticks, will get cheaper as time goes by (i currently have a 512)...as we all know, the 1 gig and 2 gig cards, will come down in price as time goes by, as the larger capacity ones come out:)

3) Its still one of the coolest looking devices out, and always turns heads...especially when i am in the plane on business, and am watching a full length mp4 quality movie on my tray table:)....people often ask, where can i get that...i just tell them politely, that you cant really buy it anymore:)

4) I dont know many other devices around that have good battery life, WIFI bluetooth, a NICE screen, and all the multimedia capabilities as the UX50 does.

Going on a few months now with the UX, and its the perfect companion when travelling.

Also, i just ordered a GPS bluetooth receiver for my ux50 and will figure out some way to mount it in my car, so when travelling, ill be GPS enabled with the tom tom palm application.

Any other reasons you guys can think of as to why the ux50 will get better with time:)

I agree with all your points :D

5) No one will be ever able to make the same excellent keyboard design. :)

I would disagree with #4 though. The TH55/E's battery life is much better than the UX50 when WiFi is enabled. The screen is bigger too and can now go landscape.

what about being able to surf the net, and check email, via my bluetooth phone and EDGE gprs, when say in a long car trip, or at an airport...priceless.

Its so funny to see tons of people trying to figure out what gadget you are using.

The TH55/E can do that too. Remember, the European version has Bluetooth :)

I still think the Psion series 5 had the best PDA keyboard :p

...but the Psion Revo's keyboard was nearly as good, and the device was much more pocketable.

Guys I agree with you,

the UX is really a cool device, but I can't think it's just a matter of time we won't be able to enjoy everything it does.
Just think to our web browser: I'm using Netfront and I don't think it's good enough to let a mobile user browsing on-the-go.
I tried Blazer from a friend who just bought a Tungsten T5, and it's much better.
I'm still using a Jornada handheld (720, with a great keyboard) but I can't say I fully use it: basically it lets me to have a wifi internet radio in my house, pretty cool.
My impression is that UX50 is the best around, but it's already dead. I can't imagine to change it simply because there isn't anything around worthing it, but maybe soon, for example a Treo 650 with a UMTS connectivity and an embedded WIFI connection...
Anyway the best way to keep our UX healthy is to be part of this community, which rocks! ;)

I have a friend who's still using a Palm IIIC (now that's ancient history)... but the thing is, he's still as productive as ever. :) Just a heads-up that it does not mean that the latest is the best.

Well, I used an Newton MP2100 for several years after discontinuance - with added WiFi card and Merlin wireless modem - until something better came along. As I was not 'married' to any platform, I reviewed them all and decided based on several factors to go with the UX50.

As I do environmental audits and other similar things, I needed something with a camera. As nothing (will ever?) equals the Newton OS2.1 handwriting, it had to have a keyboard. As I travel a lot and need wireless access, it needed both WiFi and BT.

Palm - nothing except UX50, PocketPC - some choices but kludged keyboards.

I do not see replacing the UX50 until something comes out that offers RADICALLY better options.

802.11G - nope, fast enough
built-in phone - nope, iSynch on my Mac keeps my T610 the 'same' as my UX50
better camera - nope, good enough
flash camera - nope
faster processor - nope, fast enuf
battery - nope, have EB40 and USB charger
bigger screen - have reading glasses

The Wi-Fi connection is sweet, but I've never used it outside of my house. Don't the Wi-Fi sites in the US charge for you to connect to their system? Anyway, I have a Bluetooth phone and being able to use "Dir Assist" to look up any number instead of paying the outrageous prices cell phone companies charge for 411 is wonderful. I also copy the # into "Quick Dial" to dial the number through my UX50. Both programs are free and my motto has always been "Free is a good Price!" Gang, it doesn't get any better than this.

I agree... It's the first time for a long time now that I keep a PDA that long...

-> It is really small, slim and light, you can take it in you pocket without trouble.
-> The screen is great,
-> great keyboard,
-> good connectivity (Wifi / BT),
-> little camera to have fun with ;)
-> internal backup for the RAM (really useful),
-> MS Pro slot (of course),
-> great MP3 / Ogg / Video player (MQV, MP4, MPG),

The only drawbacks are:
-> battery life, too short,
-> a bit short on memory (but with Virtual MS and MS it's ok),

I already bought another japanese UX-50 "just in case" and some external batteries so I can use UX as long as I can...

Did we all (except lmame) for get the most important feature of the UX. It has Internal Media. The TH /U, /E, or /H does not have that. The UX motherboard is one of a kind. The keyboard only makes it better. It is sad that American TH users have to order it from a foreign country to get the best specs for it. I ordered mine here in the US. :) No overseas for me. The TH has a motherboard that only has 32MB of RAM. What about Backup memory as well. TH might have a better screen and better battery life, the UX's flaws are recovered by its more prominent features. What other prominent features does the Th have? I'll make a list.

UX50/U:
Keyboard
Tri-Wireless (WiFi, BT, IrDA)
Quad-Memory (Backup Memory, Int. Media, MS Pro, RAM)
Rotatable camera (300° rotation)
Tablet Mode/Laptop Mode/Closed Mode

TH55/U:
Better screen
Better Battery
Dual Memory (MS Pro, RAM)
Stationary Camera
Tablet Mode/Closed Mode (translucent screen cover)

Why don't you listen to Internet Radio on your UX? I do. UX+PocketTunes+Internet Radio.

Software is another factor in getting a handheld and if there is no software for a handheld, then its not worth getting.

Is there a way for the Linux OS to run a Palm Application or is this an impossible hack to figure out?

I agree. Back when Sony was still on the PDA market, I was hoping they would make a second generation of the UX series to compete with the Zaurus. Sadly, now we just have to be contented with rumors. :(

Is it possible to wipe out the Linux OS on a Zaurus and replace it with Palm OS?
