I know, I posted this in the gadget and gizmos forum too, but it is a sweet gadget. As you know, unless you have lived under a rock the last year, the Sony Playstaion Portable (PSP) is launching tomorrow. My question is, who is getting it? I know i am.

Im getting the PSP just as value pack, no bundle, and then getting wipeout from Compusa which has all the psp games for 35.99. I wasnt going to buy the PSP in a bundle like they sold at Gamestop and EB Games.

Cool. Didn't know they had a value pack. The thought of another MS and Sony crap headphones made me queezy, ok the thought of another Sony propietory device does that too me. I would like a PSP for playing videos, but not games, so its current price is much more then I want to pay.
Is this the same value pack for $399:

Make sure you get up bright and early. :) PS2s sold out the first morning where I live.

Gamestop (Micronesia Mall, Guam) opened at 8AM (5PM EST) today for those who had pre-ordered the PSP. I arrived at around 9AM and was able to talk to some of the people in the store. Apparently, they confirm that the Spiderman 2 UMD does not work with the Japanese PSPs. Some of the people at the store were also saying that there are two versions of Japanese PSPs -- the later ones being not able to play North America released games. I was able to borrow a Wipeout Pure UMD. After seeing that it worked with my Japanese PSP, I got one ($47.50 over here). I also showed off Ridge Racers, which I believe is not available until later.
At least for the Micronesia Mall branch, there were about 300 pre-orders. There were a lot of varied accessories like game cases, face armors, and disk jackets. Some of the games that I saw available were: WipeOut Pure, Spiderman 2, Dynasty Warriors, and Need For Speed: Underground Rivals. I was told that Untold Legends will be coming in later today.
The customers I saw ranged from a uniformed armed forces officer to moms swinging by to get a unit before heading off to work. No kids are usually out in the mall this early during Spring Break.

Did they get in trouble?
Here's an accessory I thought was quite lame, but then I relized it was only meant for movie and music playback:

My first thought was how the freak would I hold a PSP with these attatched.

JackAxe

Send everyone to an automated "no help what so ever" support system. :)
I've learned my lesson with the Clié, no more Sony propietory devices unless they're priced very low and don't include Sony accessories.

And even more reasons while Sony WILL NOT be getting Two Hundred and Fifty MORE of MY Dollars:
...But the PSP is not the first device from Sony that has been pitched as the "next Walkman." Sony's MiniDisc products, for example, mostly fizzled because they used a Sony proprietary audio technology that competitors did not enthusiastically embrace. Likewise, the Memory Stick Walkman, an early digital music player, was mauled by critics for its clunky interface, which made getting music on and off the gadget a chore.
The PSP might have both handicaps. Early reviews have praised the PSP as a slick-looking, excellent handheld that allows multiple users to compete wirelessly, but some critics have knocked it for being somewhat inelegant as a media playback device.
Sony's biggest gamble with the PSP may be that the device will be successful enough to push a new technology standard into wide use: the Universal Media Disc, basically a shrunken DVD that uses proprietary technology from Sony.
Sony is betting that PSP users will pay $20 for a movie that they can watch only on the device (games for the PSP cost $40 or $50). The first million units of the PSP will come with copies of the movie "Spider-Man 2," a Sony Pictures release. Other movies to be available in the format include "Kill Bill Vol. 1," "XXX" and "Terminator 2: Judgment Day."...
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A61512-2005Mar23.html
Please people..let's regain our SANITY! Why would I AGAIN fork over hard-earned dollars for YET ANOTHER proprietary Sony technology (UMD) just to watch movies on a tiny screen!???? Which WILL ONLY PLAY IN THE PSP!?? Sony sees "SUCKER" written all over your foreheads.
Again...Sony says "JUMP!", and you say "How High??". Pathetic.
I could spend the same money (c.$20) and get the same movie in DVD format that will play in MANY devices that I own (a DVD will play in my: Laptop, portable DVD player, home DVD theatre, etc., and so on...)
This is just irrational consumerism.
JackAxe
03-24-2005, 11:24 PM
That's funny. :D
After reading the second article, I've learned that Michael Pachter is an idiot. Gee, he remembers the Walkman from 25 years ago, but thinks in 5 years people will some how forgotten the iPod, which has completely obliterated the Walkman as the most popular music player of all time.
Here's something quite lame. Sony is forcing all us peeps in the US to buy "Twisted Metal," if we want a PSP. My memories of this game are painful as it is one of the worst games I had owned for the PS1.
Just another reason not to buy a PSP at this time. Not saying no, it's just worth the typical hassles of owning any propietory Sony device. Afterall, I'm no longer a consumer whore. :)
I talked to my friend who has one and he didn't get any bad pixels, but his other friend did. He has some minor dust under his screen in the corners, not much to fret about though.

OH NOES! THEY'RE OUT TO GET US YET AGAIN!
For the love, chill out. You make it sound like it was only made to play movies; The thing is an entertainment device, used to play videogames. I can't think of anyone who will buy UMD movies, but please stop acting like Sony is out to get into my bank account and suck the life out of me.
While the movies might look really freakin' good on the PSP, There is no way I think that people who buy the PSP will admire it have it for it's movie watching capability.
We essentially agree, but you're taking this waaaay too seriously.

Circuit City is forcing their customers who want a PSP to also buy Twisted Metal. My friend and his friends bought from there and he misinformed me stating it was all US retail. I since found out from my friend at GameCrazy that it was only CC doing that, which is lame.
I did play with a PSP today. Great screen as expected, the the anologue nub is nice and tight. (Definately a bonus.) I was surprised by the thickness and weight. They looked thinner behing the glass at E3. Overall a great "PS2" portable. Like the Clié it's definately lacking in the other "multimedia" areas. To me the games look like the same pixelated PS2 stuff I've grown to expect, just more so. I noticed this at E3. But overall it is purdy game unit.
Sony really needs to address the load times. The battery would also be nice.
Not selling as well as a DS initially, but then again it didn't have Christmas sells and I can't see any normal parent forking out $250 for their kid(s), so that he or she can inturn play volent games like GTA on the go.
Kudos to Sony for making the Wi-fi so accessible though. Being able to play your friend over the internet without additional software was a good call on their part.

I bought a Clié because of the hype and all the misinformation Sony printed. Boy was I misslead. I went to CliéSource because of my PDA, but stayed for the peepholes. Sony definately didn't win me over after I found out that most of their so called features, mainly music capabilities were lies. And I don't peticulary like 98% of PS2 games, so buying a portable that is trying to be another "Jack of all trades" and basis its primay games on the PS2 doesn't really apeal to me. :)
The screen is purdy though and like usual it has a nice Sony design. But as even some of the biased sites have pointed out, it's not the number one choice for gameplay, which is more important in my book. :)

Well, for those of you interested in buying the PSP, now might not be the best time. I was talking to the Toys R Us salesman, who told me that the Sony rep told him that in two months, they will cut the model price of the PSP from $299CDN to $249CDN! IMO, that is a much better price; I think I will wait now!
JackAxe
03-26-2005, 09:21 PM
I'm shooting for $129, but would consider $199 since the unit felt well built like my Clié. At least the US version, or this latest rev. :)
In the end it will be the game(s) that make it a must for me.
Another way to save money on a PSP, is to buy one of the mass returns that had bad pixels. :D

Hey guys, just FYI, if anyone canno find any more PSP's or do not want to buy the gay bundle packs that stores are forcing you to buy, just go to Target. I went there yesterday and they had ten i could see behind the counter, and 8 sitting behind a glass case, and they had a bunch of games in stock.
Straight from Target rep." Yeh, we have a lot, no one thinks to come here for the PSP."
I then went to Gamestop, nearby, and didnt see any out front, so i went to their sales clerk. "We had two this morning, but were sold out in minutes."-said the rep.
"When will you get more in?" i said.
"About three weeks."he said.
I talked to him for a little longer and he told me that he got his at target, haha.
So go to Target if you need one, and the guy form target says the next shipment he is getting is in a week.

OMG!!! I can't control myself when I saw the PSP in stock at wal-mart, I broke down and bought the Value Pack. That is so much better than the bundles the others try to force on me. The PSP is so sleek, beatiful, and sexy, I love the design, what I even love is the clear, see through L&R buttons, very nice touch. I am so freakin broke now, well, looks like bread and rice for the next week or so. I can't wait to finish chargin!

If I were on the go 100% of the time, didn't have a "Powerbook" with a longer lasting battery, :p then a PSP for movies would be a no brainer. But then again, paying more then a DVD for a lower-rez UMD that only works on a PSP and would look awful on any TV is not worth it.

You just need to get one of the new "Memorystick Select" 4gb editions, and store your movies on that. No new movie formats. Anyways, it wont be long before someone finds out how to write UMD discs using a desktop. Then you can put movies on them and everything.

You are exactly right. In all seriousness...the PSP is certainly a neat device, but I'm doubtful if I will ever buy one. I already have a great platform for viewing movies in a TRULY "pocketable" form: my TH55! :D
The only thing holding me back all these months from doing this is my lack of a really LARGE MS (2 Gigs or larger), and the $$$ to buy it.

JackAxe
03-27-2005, 06:19 PM
The UMD uses H.264, which is in fact a "new format." The movies that it plays from the MS are only MPEG4s, which don't hold a candle to the quality/size ratio that can be achieved by H.264.
H.264 can do true HD 1080i stream at only 7Mbit, where as a MP4 is no where close.
So are you saying it's OK to "illegally" rip DVDs to a very expensive Memory Stick? ;) So if I want to carry around maybe 2 movies depending on the quality, It will cost me about $800. No thanks. :D

Clie's are pretty good multimedia devices and the PSP uses the same structure: mp3 playback (drag and drop) and nice movie capabilities (ImageConverter2.1). Decent quality can be archieved with a movie taking less than 512mb definetely.

Hey, It's OT gaming section. :) I own a Clié, there are 2 of them in my house. Tis why I came to Cliésource. I still use my Clié every other day as a PIM device, which it is great for and a $600 remote for my office TV. I bought it for MP3 playback, but for that part it really sucks.
I learned quickly that for multimedia outside of Sony's strict control on the Clié is pretty mediocore. And as my friends are pointing out that just bought PSPs, it's a great portable for games like GTA, but for music and video it's has been limited by Sony once again and of course is mediocre in those areas.
I saw the PSP at E3 and wanted one. Then I heard about a 2-3 hour battery life, so I went eh not for the original price of over $400. Which was listed in my friend's system down at GameCrazy. Then I found out that is was using H.264 for its video and it could connect to any computer with only Sony's internal software, so I was interested in getting one once again. But then I found out just recently that its video is limited to MP4 at only 320x240 and for a music device it sucks like the Clié. So now once again I'm at the "eh" point and can wait for a better price.
And as i've said, the PSP is built very well and has a purdy screen and carries Sony's nice design. Now wake me up when they fire their software engineers and make a device that's as intuitive and easy to use as an iPod. :)
JackAxe
03-27-2005, 06:54 PM
Goto the OT Audio/Video thread and read why most of ust peeps do not like the Clié or any Sony device for MP3 playback. :p There are dozens, if not hundreds of reasons.
You'll find are ramblngs in these two threads if I recall:
http://www.1src.com/forums/showthread.php?t=77894
http://www.1src.com/forums/showthread.php?t=82112
To sum it up, there is only one word that describes digital audio(Espeically MP3.) playback on a Sony devices; It sucks. ;)
The PSP is great for its "type" of games and Clié is great for PIM, but the other areas are blah as usual. But on that note an iPod sucks for PIM and games, but is unbeatable for music.

well i'm a good 2 year clie owner, (nx70 my senior year in high school) and i hated the fact that i never really had EXCELLENT games for it, i never really used the scheduler, i just used it for listening to music, watching music videos, and playing the palm based games (which weren't indepth, but DEFINITLY addictive) needless to say i'm not gonna stop playing those palm based games, but now that i carry my psp with me everywhere (i carry it strapped to my leg (my pda to the other leg) so when people see me pull it out it kinda looks like i'm pulling out a weapon,) i just use my phone for alerts (like i always have) and now i have built in wifi, (sadly no bluetooth) but i got wipeout pure and i just access the webrowser in there and i can surf the internet any time on my psp, i love it, (unfortunatly it doesn't run java so no aim express)
i made a deal with my best friend while standing at walmart, if i bought it he'd pay me 60 bucks a month till he paid one off then i'd go and buy it for him, he chickened out, so now i have an awesome cool device.....and sadly no one to play against, speaking of which i was due in a halo 2 tourney about 10 minutes ago, and my psp needs charging
laterz
Keeping my eye out on the homebrew scene for this. So far nothing except the web browser in Wipeout, but imagine running some 8/16 bit emulators on this. It's not going to be easy to crack the code though.

well, i'd rather not see this being a geek's device, seeing how its SUPPOSED to kill the DS, (massive sarcasm) it is meant for playing games, and if they release a web browser with it, it would be good, but any emulators would just make it look like a computing device and that would shove the not so techy gamers to something else
hey jackaxe what kind of missing buttons are you referring to?

I know the PSP has a keyboard, but you peeps would seriously use this for web browsing over a Clié? I guess the analogue stick could be used as a mouse. I personally won't even use my Clié for this function. I guess I've never had a real need for it.
The L2 and R2 are not present.
"SUPPOSED" being the keyword. :D Kill the DS, well it's "tryyyyyyyying." :p It's going to be a long battle and unless Sony drastically drops the price and targets kids also, it will never suceed. I bought a DS for gameplay and because it can play DS, GBA, SNES and even Sega games right now. Plus the home-brew scene has alwasy been huge on the GBA. Me and my friend have been slowly working on a game. :) Tis another reason why the PSP will have a rough time defeating Nintendo's dominace. I've never met someone pissed of at Nintendo, but I know several peeps that have been burned big time buy Sony.
If any one company could've dethroned Nintendo's handheld market share, it would've been Sony. But they really haven't been doing well lately. So I'm not sure if they have what it takes now days. I would rather see them succeed then Microsoft though, but Nintendo is doing a great job in my book, so they can stay on top as far as I care. Sony's new unit is just a different beast for a different niche. Give me a good non typical PS2 game and I'll buy a PSP.

nah, PSP games do seem to look and play better than pOS games, but a PDA is still more practical for me. I like how one device does many different functions even tho many of them are only decent. I've also got a P1 PDA, so I'd need to invest in MS Duo cards now. On the road, PDA games are sufficient for me.

The wait is over, OMG this picture quality is freakin amazing. I'm going to have to start building a PSP movie collection. The movies are much better on the PSP than watching them on my computer. I'm so glad they had SpiderMan2 with the value pack.
I hope you don't already have a large DVD collection. You're gonna have to rebuy all those titles again :( I'd rather spend the $$ on more games
boys... do not forget why we are here at 1src. BECAUSE WE WERE AT CLIESOURCE!
That means: we loved Sonys proprietary stuff :)
I still love the Clié. I have no problems with the MS ord MS Duo.
But I think I shall hate the customer service. 9 dead pixels are really too much. Even one is too much on my VZ90 :|
This used to be PalmOneCity, until it seemed to have been taken over by you Clier's ever since Sony closed shop (at least it seems like there's more Clie users than P1 or Tapwave), but you're not gonna hear me complain again........ for a while :p

just kidding, i'm back though, so i guess i'll see ya'll around
Vishalca, I think that new price will be for the value pack (no mem stick, headphones, remote, case, etc)
