and bought a PPC - a Dell Axim x50v to be precise. I was influenced in part by Lance's logs/review.
I also wanted to try Pocket Skype very much and I can say this is one killer app for a PPC. I think VOIP is very important but sadly I can't use it on my T5/SD Wifi combo cos
- Gphone is dead
- and hey where did the mic go?
What I can report for Palm fans is that even with a 624MHz processor, my T5 will leave the x50v trailing in the dust for day to day PIM use and referencing etc. WM2003SE is just so sloooow.
So for daily use, it's still a Palm. My T5 still lives in my pocket during the day and is what I reach for for most PDA apps.
But with Dockers Mobile Pant™ there's an empty pocket for that Axim. Talk about Device divergence (!) since for Skypeing and watching movies on Betaplayer.... well that's what PPCs do best for now ;)

Though having used a rx3715 and was for the most part pleased with the hardware; when it came down to it, I didnt need the wifi. That reamins a large reason why I always look with interest when a palmOS user makes the switch. Sometimes I think that feature want takes the lead in our minds over getting things done. I dont mean that to say that wifi isnt useful to anyone on a PDA, but that more is made if the better hardware of the WinMob side and consideration isnt given as much to productivity.
For me, the WinMob OS needed software added to simplify the interface. That, much like on my laptop, is not my idea of efficient. The palmOS needs software to make it more complex. For me, that was a paradigm that worked more with my means to an end.
In the end, one has to have a device that fits them. In (most) of the How To articles that I have done at BargainPDA, I have stressed to do your homework completly before just getting something that has the latest features that are more or less just accessories. If I need VPN and Terminal Services, I do my homework and see that palmOS devices just dont work as well out of the box. I dont purchase a palmOS device and complain about it. That is self counterproductivity. On the other hand, if I purchase a palmOS PDA and find that I need more, I do my homework and evaluate if the item that has what I need will give me the intended results with as small a break in productivity as possible. From there, I always feel confident in making a decision on what to buy and what comes out in the future I dont salivate over, but appreciate as to the forward thinking that they are.
PalmDoc: I do hope that you are happy with your Dell. It is a very solid device, and I would recommend it to anyone who needs wifi and BT in a well designed package. If only the OS didnt need so many enhancements to simplify it, I perhaps would have probably stayed with a just as capable rx3715.

Very interesting. I do have 2 questions:
1. Do you have any data on how long you can surf the Internet using WiFi with the X50V compared to the T5/SD WiFi combo? I have the T5 with the WiFi card and I'm interested to know how this "setup" compares to a high-end PPC device. Afterall, the stock T5 comes with a 1300 mAh battery compared to 1100 mAH for the stock X50V (I know that the X50V has the option to replace the battery).
2. Did you perform a few tests checking which device offers the better download rates (e.g. downloading a MP3 file from some server using WiFi)?
Thanks and Cheers.

1. No firm data. My guess is about 2+ hours but I really haven't done any objective timing. Neither have I timed the T5/SD Wifi combo sicne I really don't spend hours connected on a PDA. Just to get online check mail, check out some websites and that sort of thing. With my T5 I do that mainly with GPRS but I slot in the Wifi card when I have a hotspot.
2. Don't know either. Hardly do any downloading with either device
The Dell has some bugs with the Wifi connection utility. One has to disable the Power saving sometimes to get DHCP to work properly.
I find Palm's Wifi connection setup more intuitive.
I only wish palmOne could quickly come up with a dual wireless PDA ASAP as I find it now quite cumbersome to keep slotting the card in and out.
