Hi Cliepet been reading your posts about the Sony Clie VZ and I am fascinated by this machine I have a UX50. Can you tell me what the machine is like is the operating system the same as UX50 (obviously apart from being in Japanese) is the processor any faster being that it is only a few MHZ faster. Is there any point upgrading from a UX50 apart from the fact it is the coolest looking Clie and the fact that you have to import it means I want it more. What do you use it for or is it more a toy do you find it useful. I really want one so much but I cant afford one right now I am living in hope that they come down in price. thanx
Oh yeah is there any chance anyone could make a remote app for UX50 as that was really useful on my old T675

Ill answer a few of those questions. Cliepet gets them for amusement, so he can program for them. CP has like 1,000,000 Aibos too. If you wanna know my opinion about the VZ-90, its a better media player than the PSP, and is good for that use, but not necessisarily good as a regular PDA, because of its size.

i'm sorry cliepet, i know this thread is aimed at you and i'm sure you can provide much more detailed, coherent answers, but i thought that maybe i could start off the answer process with a first-response type thing...
hi evilbanana (?)
1) Processor on UX/VZ is identical (TH also uses the same, it's called DSP)
2) Same operating system (Palm OS 5). The minor version number may be different, but it doesn't make a noticable difference. The important thing is that they're both OS 5 (the VZ isn't cobalt).
3) Benefits of VZ over UX: Better screen (OLED, very cool): black theme, no whine; awesome looks, awesome battery life, amazing media capabilities, cool button layout (or at least i think it is) and sliding screen, CF/Memory Stick compatible for viewing pics off your digital camera as well as other media. Cons: EXPENSIVE!, and in total Japanese (but CliePet's and jamerican's translations basically bridge the language gap, so don't worry about that).
4) It's not a toy to me at least. I use it for developing palm programs and as a general media device for plane rides/trips/free time. it's very useful and powerful
could you explain more what you mean by "remote app"?

By Remote app I mean the remote commander app , does it not run because a) different processor or b) the IR sensor is different

the ir sensor on the UX/VZ/TH is not of the right power or type to be used in remote-controlling home appliances. i don't believe it has anything to do with the processor.

Most questions are already answered.
In general please don't put a person's name in the title of a message

Minor additions/corrections:
> Is there any point upgrading from a UX50
Yes, if you want the unique features of the VZ90
Read my "Day 1" review
Big Pluses IMHO: OLED screen, CF slot, amazing battery life (especially compared to UX)
Minuses: No camera, no microphone, no keyboard, $ and availability, no bluetooth
The core software features are similar.
Even though the VZ90 is expensive, remember that the UX50 was $700 originally
-------
The CPU part is called the "HHE" (Hand Held Engine) - used by the UX, TH and VZ models
The HHE includes a true CPU (goes up to 123MHz), a DSP, 8MB onchip RAM, and other stuff
http://pc.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/2003/0717/sony216.jpg
IR is bad on all these models.
The IR diode is weak (hardware) and there is no software component to do "Consumer IR" (from either Sony or 3rd parties)
The PDAs will do IrDA of course (short range beaming)

I wish I could afford the VZ. Looks so cool. But no keyboard turns me off. UX has a lousy battery but all its other features surpass all American Palm OS PDAs and that is a fact.

wow, i never knew the vz90 lacked a microphone. i think it was dumb for sony to leave out a microhpone for such an expensive machine.

to add to SonyStyle's comment...
as well as a media-based device. The UX and TH are more media based then the VZ90. What a mistake.
