Hello all,
I've just started using Avanto on my NX. I didnt realise how much room its taking! Ive got around 10 sites which i syncronise with at the moment and combined with the actual program its taking nearly 2mb of space.
I know that Avantgo for Palm OS 5 is still in beta stage but i was wondering if there was a way i could have it located on a stick.
I tried moving it with Powerrun and apart from running very slow (it took a few seconds - powerrun stated 11 seconds to run) every time i tried to sync, Avanto stated that i had a different version of Avantgo compared to the version i had on my PC and that i had to install the same version.
Thing is, is that i havent got a different version. I've only got this one. When i move Avantgo back to the Sony (via Powerrun), everythings fine again.
Anyone had this problem?

If people would read the developer's beta page it tells them this, I am not chastizing you, it's only a general statement.
PowerRun is NOT needed to run or hotsync AvantGo Beta 5.x

yes, i did eventually read their notes. im the type who goes ahead and loads something without fully reading the developers notes then starts asking questions about why it doesnt work the way i want to.
i agree with you about Powerrun. However, in saying what you have said i found that utilizing powerrun makes my life easier. How? Powerrun moved ALL the app including relevant databases into the stick saving me even more space.
am i right in saying that? or is their a way i could have done that without powerrun. i also use Zlauncher. Would that have done the same thing?

All I was trying to convey was that PowerRun wasn't necessary for AvantGo.
PowerRun is a fine program! I will only use it, if it's absolutely necessary. I try not to have too many apps/hacks running at once. Hopefully my approach reduces the chance of fatal errors.
For now I haven't needed PowerRun as most of my apps are in the MS launcher folder. Some of my apps that have a large database and are VFS aware, so it need not be in RAM. I currently have about 5.7mb free space in RAM.

With the OS5 beta you can cut out some of the memory used by AvantGo by telling it to store the downloaded data to the Memorystick.
To do this you can run AGConnect, go to the settings for your server, and tell it to 'Use Card'. (You can also reach these settings through AvantGo).
A couple of caveats:
1) AvantGo will still be in your handheld taking up around 980k or so, but I'm guessing you'll still free up another 1000k roughly since you have so many channels.
2) I had two computers I would sync on. I installed the beta on one and it did fine with transferring the data to the card, but when I used the other it reset the option of Use Card and put everything in regular memory. If this happens to you I recommend uninstalling Avantgo completely and reinstalling the Beta to make sure you have the proper conduit.
3) It appears AvantGo wants to sync to a specific card rather than just using whatever is in the slot (in the option of Use Card it shows the card's name). If you have a bunch of Memorysticks you might have to make sure you have your 'AvantGo Stick' in whenever you sync (honestly, I have no idea why they don't have an option for whatever card happens to be in the slot at the time).
4) Its a lot slower. It appears that they don't just stream everything into memory and then move it over to the memorystick but instead copy it a little at a time (which is probably good if your Clie only has a little memory free). This causes lots of open and close operations to the MS in addition to the slow read and write operations. End result is that on my unit it takes around 5 minutes to sync.
So like everything else, you don't get something for nothing. There's lots of trade offs.

My unit ran fine with AvantGo in the /Palm/Launcher folder. HotSync'd fine via cradle or wireless, but yes it's slow.

MOST important... make sure your MS is named.
All you need in your RAM is AGConnect, and that's only 44k. Everything else can be on MS.
