CF Modem Installation Instructions
Hello all,
I have been requested by our favorite Brazilian, Pelaca, to put together a step by step instruction set on getting a CF modem to properly function in an NX. Here goes.....
1. Obtain an NX (preferably via legal means)
2. Obtain a compatible modem. I use the AmbiCom which I purchased at Best Buy (click here)
3. Install the attached files contained on the two following posts. The first file (cfutils.zip) contains the Japanese version of the modem drivers. The second file (cfutilityen.zip) contains the modified English language file that Pelaca has spent many hours on.
4. After installation, perform a Soft Reset of your NX by pressing the small button on the back of your unit.
5. Locate and execute the new program "CF Utility" in your launcher (hint: the icon has a picture of a hammer & screwdriver)
6. Insert your new modem into the CF slot on your device. The screen should read:
Brand: CF
Product: 56K Modem JATE
7. Return to your launcher and run your system PREFS utility. Select "Network" in the dropdown menu (upper right).
8. Within Network Preferences tap the dropdown menu next to Service and select the top entry (AT&T). Next, tap the dropdown menu next to Connection and select "Edit Connections".
9. Within "Available Connections" select "New"
10. Within "Edit Connection" replace the name "Custom" with the name of your modem (i.e. AmbiCom, or maybe Pete). Set "Connect to:" to "Modem". Set "Via" to the top setting of "Analog Modem (gibberish)". Tap "Ok" then tap "Done"
11. Now you are back at the "Network Preferences" screen. Replace the service name to your ISP name. Enter your ISP info under "User Name", "Password" & "Phone #". Under the "Connection" setting, select the modem name you entered in step 10 (should be the bottom choice).
12. Connect telephone line (analog) and tap "Connect"
Simple eh?

I saw your post and installed the drivers on my NX even though my modem is on it's way in the mail...When I hotsync'd all the files in it automatically asked me to reset which I did. I am able to access the CF utility without problem. Did you install the english version?...I only installed the files included in the cfutilityen.zip above not the other zip. Good luck

Yep it will if you don't have a valid CF card in the slot, currently a recognized modem or the PEGA-WL100 WiFi card.

Yes, the lockup is normal if there is no valid card/driver installed! The only modem I remember is Ambicom(Best Buy?), the rest were lost in the database corruption. Leggnet or Pelaca are two posters who maybe able to give you more info.

You have to install... the "CFUtilityen.prc" then the "CFNULLinf.prc", "CFmodeminf.prc" and "CFmodemvdrv.prc"...
In the "cfutilityen.zip" you can found the needed files...

The TDK, KAGA, Billionton are supported by Sony but the Princeton and Ambicom works too...

Thanks so much to buzmccowan and Pelaca.
I'm so grateful. I am now able to work with my AOL for PDA.
The posted instructions worked quite well. They were a little confusing to me a few places so I took a couple of chances. Here follow the questions I (as a brand new Clie user) had...
The instructions do not state exactly where to install the two zip files or if they need to be unzipped prior to loading onto the handheld.
I found that, using the palm software, the files needed to be uploaded to the "handheld".
I only had to load a total of four files, all from the from the unzipped CFUtilityen.zip file.
CFUtilityen.prc
CFNULLinf.prc
CFModeminf.prc
CFModemvdrv.prc
Hopefully this will help another "newbie"

I have a Viking CF modem I will try with this method. I also have a Socket CF Digital Phone Card that connects to my cell phone. I tried getting this to work, but it failed. Do you know if this would be possible because I would love to go wireless with my cell in areas where I am not around a WiFi connection? Thanks for your work on the CF modem drivers.

I don't remember seeing the CF Library File (CFLib.prc) before applying the latest NX Update from Sony.
IF CFLib.prc is newly added, is this what NX CF Drivers developers are looking for? Interesting!
Otherwise, if that is just an update to the existing CFLib file, I am wrong about my assumption.
What do you think, Pelaca? or dmp? or any CF Driver developer out there?
I have a Targus 56k v.90 analog modem which I have used successfully on my NR70V using the Sony communications sled ( CF70).
I have tried using the utility mentioned in this thread on an nx70v without success. It will not recognize the modem. I also tried loading the CF70 drivers on the NX70V but that did not work either.
any thoughts?

The Targus modem is similar to the Billionton or Kaga Deshi but the manfid changes...
The Xircom (true serial) , Hawking (Winmodem) and Targus (Windmodem) doesn't work

Normaly you can modify the expected words and the response words...

Hello,
I just tried to use my ambicom modem and was unable to sign on to my netzero account. It stated that it had an authentication error (0x1233)???, It signs on and then shuts down stating the error. I tried using AOL mail and calling in with the same error result.
I downloaded all the files Japanese and english and still no resolution.
Thanks

This could be the result of an incorrect user name and/or password.
Check your username on Network panel... may be is "username@domain" instead "username"

Yes, thanks to buzzmccowan and pelaca (Who is from Argentina, not Brazil).
In order to download the files you need to be a registered member of ClieSource!! It's slightly complicated but can be done in an hour or so.
I found that I HAVE to use AT&T WorldNet. When I use Earthlink the modem doesn't even work, the "on" light never comes on. Then I use my regular Earthlink user name, password and phone number. I connected on the third try.
Now, if only the Micro Innovations wireless keyboard would support the NX series......

The error 0x1233 is for invalid username or password....
When I say username@domain, domain is not exactly netzero.com... domain in this case is the user domain not the ISP domain...

I as well as everyone appreciate what you have done. I just bought a Sprint CDMA "AirPhone" CF card that I use with my laptop. Any ideas if you can generate the drivers for this or maybe we all should apply pressure to Sprint to build a fire under Sony to release the necessary information. We are not speaking of memory expansion, so why should they care. It would enhance use/sales of the NX and NZ.
Please let us know your thoughts on this. Thanks.

I have installed the cfutility.
I can connect to my ISP, but after a while and this is random. NetFront will have a network timeout issue. Then I must disconnect and reconnect. Sometime it works and some time it doesn't.
I can always connect to my ISP, but it seems like I am loosing the connection.
Is there a tool, to ping a server?
And do I need to use a script for the dial-up, because currently I have nothing.
Thanks

Simple eh?
Dear buzzmccowam
I purchased a Ambicom C F Modem and installed according to your instructions with the exception of selecting at&t my NX70 did not have that listing but it did have MSN and since that is who I have my service with I clicked on that instead. The rest went just like you said other that my user name I had to type inMSN/ and than my user name. When I click the connect button it says Dialing msn.com then sings me in and athuenacates that I have been singed in. But this is where things get stickey I do not get my home page or anything else for that matter. It acts like I have no Browzer. Is it possible that I have to down load a browzer? I am diffinatly connected with my ISP because I can listen to the connection on my speaker phone. Any help or sugestions that you would have for me would be greatly appreciated Wilmot_D@msn.com

Is there a better init string besides "AT&F"? It works , but perhaps I don't know a secret.

Does anyone have the connection lock-up.
Sometimes, I needed to disconnect and reconnect to be able to surf on the web using Netfront again.
Is it my ISP or is the drivers?
Thanks

Dear Legs_ski
The only problem I have with getting disconnected from the internet is if I let my Clie run untouched for two minutes, then it goes into the sleep mode and disconnects so I have to reconnect. The only problem that I am having is with my E_Mail as soon as I send a message it Lock's up on me. But I am working on that. If anyone out there has a suggestion on how to make the right connections from clie mail work I would appreciate some hep Wilmot_D@msn.com.

Got ambicom modem today. I have installed all the drivers, etc. listed in this thread. CF utility recognizes card okay, setup okay, but no light. Also, no matter my login setup, i get "Error:modem not found (0x1106). I don't know what this means. Is there somewhere I can type an AT command to check modem, etc. Any ideas? I also have eruware drivers installed. Modem does not dial.

Those two and there is one from TDK.
The Princeton that Brando sells works (it is made by Billionton), but it seems it is sold out...

Go with the Ambicom. It works very well. I haven't had any problems with it.

Can you help me? I have downloaded Pelaca's software, purchased the Ambicom modem. Reset the machine. Clicked on CF Utility and get nothing but Card N/C opposite Brand and Product on the CF Utility screen.
Any advice?
Thanks.
