anybody hear of the new Blue ray disks ? Its supposed to be the latest in storage. It beats the CD hands down in terms of storage and access speeds but then again would require additional hardware in the very least .. I wanted to post a link on this but found nothing that gave a good idea on the complete ambit of this ... the other facet is that it will probably be used for/by the gaming industry ... SONY apparantly has already started using it and Panasonic and Hitachi seem to be the next in line ....
Google it - there's a lot of stuff on it :)

I need it.. It's a good thing that they're not taiting it like they did DVD-R by first inferring that we only needed DVD-RAM..

Apple's going with the larger format, which is cool with me. I would personally like 25 to 50 G discs for backup.

Heck I would take the 1 terabyte 1 inch cube of holographic memory if it was available, bigger is better. :)

holographic memory is primitive, I use 8.25 disks now days. Obviously, bigger is bettter.

unfortunatley the case for it is 3ft by 3ft... a bit conspicuous... ours is older, I hope they have better ones now. :)

Excuses excuses. It's only someone else's property, just take it. :)

The battle between HD-DVD and Blu-ray is strange. I don't know why the HD-DVD group even continues to fight against Blu-ray. Its only advantage is initial cost and production means. Actually... they're still trying to get rid of those cartridge-cases for Blu-ray discs... so that's a big point for HD-DVD. If Blu-ray can get rid of that crap (and they're working hard on it), the money's in the bag.

Not a fan of those cartridges. But I would deal with them since the higher capacity would easily back up some of my larger projects.

But... Blu-Ray hasn't had carts for ages from what I've seen?!?!?
I personally would PREFER cartridges. I *hate* discs - They're so bloody awkard to store. Printing art on them would be a lot easier too ;)
I never understood this opposition to cartridges TBH... I can't see any disadvantages to them... I mean, what's the general view on them? Reasons for not wanting etc.?
If they came *in* cartidges (Not like the terminally horrid Caddy system where you had to put the CD *in* a caddy before you could use it, and then take it out again... bah!) then I don't see why people would be so opposed to it...
But as I said, Blu-Ray doesn't need carts - Although the underside layer is only 0.1mm thick (Compared to 0.6mm of (HD)-DVD and CD), it has a scratch-resistant coating which should actually make the disc more hardwearing than the 0.6mm polycarb layer on normal discs.
Of course, when CDs came out they MFGs were all saying they were more robust than Tapes, which as we all know is a load of cobblers, so I guess we'll have to wait for some 'real-world' testing.
I can see why HD-DVD is there, but I think it's very short-sighted. Blu-ray is more ambitious, but it has better room for growth and expansion.
Frankly, I just wish they wouldn't keep forking specs - FFS just settle on one disc format!!

I agree. I like the idea of cartrages. It would present problems for mobile applications and aesthetics, though. Blu-Ray DVDs haven't required carts in at least a year, though. HD-DVD, to me, is a shortsighted attempt to just make money.

What do you MEAN you like cartridges?? lol!! Imagine if CDs looked like NES carts when they came out. No one would have bought them! And talk about awkward to store? A whole new media storage system would have to be designed for Blu-ray if it became the mainstream multimedia medium. CD/DVD cases and racks abound, people would have to shove them all aside and buy new...cartridge..shelves....

Stop freaking out over the cart thing.. it won't happen, but if it did then that would mean the end of scratched media. The cart would be easy enough to fit into the old storage systems if they made jewel cases with the square inset for a cart instead of a place for the CD.

Well, if they were in cartridges, they would be of comparible size to a CD Jewel case, so you could use the old shelves.
Better yet, unlike discs you could stack these things on and old shelf instead of having to buy special boxes in order to accomodate the round disc, so they'd be LESS awkward to store!
I seriously cannot see the problem with them. Floppy disks come in a cartridge, so do Zip disks, MO, Minidisc, Tapes - It's only CD-type things that don't, and I never figured out the 'why' part...!
Originally it was practicality (CDs didn't come with caddies, so you had to constantly swap them out; Totally defeats the point of them), and cost (The old crappy caddy cost a lot more than the raw CD disc media), but when you have Dual-Layer DVDs going at a fiver a pop that could easily absorb the cost of the cartridge.
To me, a naked disc would be like having the afore-mentioned NES cartridge with just the PCB and no outer-plastic shell...!
And that would have sucked...
Yet here we are... it's a funny ol' world :)

cartridges don't bother me either. I still have some MO backup disks in the CD cabinet at work, they fit rather well.

All i know is that i prefer disposable disks - there was some talk of disks that would be unsable after the first use ... It makes life a lot easier, you dont have to worry about carting them around - but then again it isnt exactly storage - just plain Giant corp high-handedness ...

Some company figured out how to make a paper CD, that only works once or twice. But like you mentioned, it's not storage. I need large backup of the the non magnetic kind. :)

exactly why I want holographic storage to become viable. :)

you could start writing it all down ... :D
The one thing that I dont like is the fact that you need new hardware .. thats the one reason I prefer MS - they come with different storage capacities and you can use the same hardware - even same drivers most of the time - thats how storage should be for PCs too ...

But it would take me years just write down the code from one of my images. Then years to input it in again and recompile. And my entire life to write down the code from just one of the videos. :(
Ahhh, I'm sad now. I'll be happy when Apple unlocks my DL DVD next month though. :) That will at least make a few of my backups less painful.

No thanks, I had carpel tunnel syndrom once from repetative stress injury. I'd rather not again.
Plus in college a steam line broke in the computing center and steamed the 3 Vax 11-780's and the one PDP-11. I had to submit two programs desk checked and hand-written "proofs" including stack status charts and our own memory/variable list (in other words hand run interpreters). This is NOT fun!!

Wow. CD caddies. That takes me back. Heck, I think I still have a few of those laying around somewhere.
Good to see I'm not the only one that remembers that.
