New Treos leaked? The T6 specs have to be a hoax, but PalmOne is innovating if anyone had bothered to look (VPN, drive mode). I also talk about Palmcasting, the Opera for Palm OS petition and the TMP beta.

And you'll also hear Jeff say "Klingon disruptor"... find out why in this week's podcast!

There is also an article on listening to the 1SRC podcasts here at 1SRC. We do not refer to it as palmcasting, but we are talking about the same thing.

Listening to 1SRC Podcasts on a Palm Device (http://www.1src.com/scripts/show/818-Listening_to_1SRC_Podcasts_on_a_Palm_Device.html)

Thanks,

I would just like to point out that Drive mode and VPN aren't innovations - Sony've had a similar thing to Drive mode for a long time, and SoftTick make an excellent third-party version. VPN software has been available for some time too (I think it's produced by Mergic...?)

Beyond their initial creations, Palm have never really innovated (IMHO) - They evolve their designs, and slowly at that. Aside from easy upgrades - Memory, CPU speed and so on, their devices are not substantially different in functionality than the original Palm Pilots IMHO.
And since the hardware and software side split, they don't even work in harmony very well any more - The kludge-job on the T|5's NVFS system is an example I love quoting :)

Now, I don't mean to sound like a Clie fanboy (I mean, I am, but that's not the point ;), but Sony, now *they* knew how to innovate - From the big stuff like HiRes+, wave sound and virtual graffiti, to smaller things like the WiFi AP browser, the BT icon on the graffiti bar and little details like being able to tap the Launcher's top battery icon to get battery % and remaining memory info - They totally blow Palm away when you talk about attention to detail.
However, like Palm, the don't document a lot of the 'little' tweaks, and I still trip over a new one every now and again. A lot of them are quite natural however, and you often will think they are part of PalmOS (Until you use a Palm device and find yourself wondering where they are ;)).
Of course, a big downside of Sony is that they were no good at evolving palong with innovating, which is why all their devices have ... interesting idiosyncrasies ;)

As for the Tungsten T|Klingon, I reckon you're right - A device like this, ignoring the impossibilities of it, would be completely out of character for a company like Palm1, although frankly even as hoaxes go it's not a very good design. What the hell is WaveLAN for starters? Why not WiMax? And where's the holomatrix projector?! Yeesh!

Opera for Palm is tricky... the current state of Opera on the desktop is that it's totally Kitchen Sink now - While the app is tiny, it's got a ridiculous case of Feature Bloat.
It also faces some stiff competition; NetFront + Landscape is gonna be a very difficult combination to beat, and I doubt many people would pay for a Palm Opera unless it was so incredibly good. However, what I've seen on Smartphones and PPC, while impressive, is not good enough to make me want to fork out cash and loose a few MB or RAM space for a mostly similar browsing experience...
I do hope they do a port however, because frankly we need some competiton in this area!

wave sound and virtual graffiti

I'm quite sure that both of these were created by TRG/Handera, not Sony.

I haven't had a chance to listen to this week's podcast, but if Jeff really does say "Klingon disruptor" then I'll probably have to burn this 'cast to disc so I can listen to it all over again.

He does indeed say, "Klingon Disruptor". Its even in relation to PDAs. If you want to know about what a Klingon Disruptor has to do with PDAs, you are going to have to listen to the podcast.

If I wasn't too tired, I'd download it tonight and listen to it. Now I'm going to have to sleep on it, and wait until after my 9am staff meeting before I can geek out.
