Hello,

Just read it on other post and would like to know how many of you would like to have a skinned FMV app. I think it'd be very nice and it'd be relatively easy for me to create one, of course just in case Cliepet would ever consider to do so. As he did the appli for free I feel we've got no right to ask him anything at all (and just thank), but if the idea of a better UI for it ever comes out, I offer myself to help with a -hopefully- nice Panther-Aqua-like skin.

Thoughts?

FMP = Full Movie Player

Install this and a certain number of the MP4 codecs from the VZ90 and you can watch MP4's full screen. I think Image Converter 2 outputs to MP4. I use FMP and altShiiva on my Mac to make mp4s to watch on my TH-55... its quite a nice combination. Gets rid of the annoying "control bar" or whatever the original movie player shows when displaying movies "full screen".

I don't see the point of a better UI than the one he implemented. Why add a skin that is going to take up more RAM?

I can understand having a skin for a launcher or for an mp3/etc audio player because you see it all the time. For a video player, especially a FULL screen player, it's almost pointless.

Cure, what settings do you use in AltShiiva...when I run it, the MP4 files I get aren't recognized by FMP.

ayu61200,
I'd really love a fancy skin for FMP. I use it all the time, but the u.i. is not that pretty. Being a mac user, I'm specially interested in the aqua part of the history.

firedog,

I try to stick with a lot of the default settings. I use OSEx to get the single VOB file I want to convert (search on MacUpdate for it... its free).

Next I open up altShiiva and point it to the VOB file, then tell it where I want to save the resulting P4. I don't check an of the debugging options.

Next tab: Crop & Scale
I UNCHECK the crop box, as I never really figured it out. :) I do scale the movie. I generally stick with 320 x 208 (or 213) because I have never successfully been able to get a movie recognized byFMV with 480 X anything scaling. You may have better luck. I leave the display size box unchecked. I leave the method option at its default (Luma bicubic/chroma bilinear)

Next tab: Video
Check the Encode Video box (duh). I leave the Xvid option on (its the default). FPS: I usually leave the same as source, just so it doesn't get too complicated.I leave the Quantizer at the default (4) and B-frames at ZERO. I leave the Key Interval at 240 (default). I check the bitrate box and set it to 42 or 45. Note I have a 2 GB memory stick, so movie size isn't that big a deal to me. All the other check boxes and options at the bottom I don't touch.

Next tab: Subtitles
Took me a while to get the hang of these, but I feel pretty comfortable with them now. For the best results, if I want subtitles, I check the Decode transparancy table and change the colors of the subtitles (first box: black, next boxes, white or gray, though your personal taste may vary...). Also, if you check decode subtitles, altShiiva bring you to the first instance of the subtitles in the viewer window at the bottom, so you can get an idea of how they will look....

Next tab: Audio
Decode ACC3 is checked by default. I leave it checked. Then I check Encode Audio, which will bring up a menu of options. I usually pick 22 Hz or 24 Hz, depending on what kind of audio it is. Nothing else is specified in this tab.

Next Tab: PSP
I leave the Optimize for PSP box checked and then input a title, just because if I ever DID want to buy a PSP, I would have all these neatly arranged movies with titles and everything all ready to go :)

Last Tab: Processing
I usually show every 1000 frames, but this has no impact on the quality of video. Click Go! and you are in business.

Well, hope that helps. You should check around for a post by lmame which has a test mp4 video properly encoded. That way you can narrow down your problem to a) is your Clie set up right? or b) is the desktop conversion set up right.

If you get the lmame test video working, then you know you have al the right codecs, etc. installed.

Let us know how you make out

Cure.
I also use AltShiiva for my encodings, and I have better image on 368x208, no crop.
Try it out. Also I usually check the normalize option in the audio tab, Makes sound a lot louder.

NOTE: installing MP4 codecs is optional (and using Image Converter 2 to create them)

You can use FMP to playback .MQV movies (created with Image Converter 1) as well as old style MPEG-1 movies (ie. any movies that play with your existing built-in Movie Player will play with FMP with the more primitive UI, but the ability to play the movie full screen without distracting UI gadgets)

In general I suggest *not* installing the MP4 codecs (unless you really want to and know what you are doing). MQV files are MPEG-4 too.

I only use MP4 files now for a couple of reasons. The converter is fast, it can take more formats, it allows fullscreen (480 by 320, and vise versa), and beats the socks off of you friend trying to pass off his T5 as a media player. If it didnt play media flawlessly, it wouldnt have been what they implemented on the VZ.

Oops! Sorry I wasn't more clear about this. For some reason I just assumed most people would be interested in playing MP4 :)
