Since I bought my palm zire 71 i have not been able to hotsync through any of my USB cables or cradle. I had a serial port connector that worked but I broke that this week and wonder if anyone has any information on how to fix this problem. I am assuming it has something to do with Windows XP Home Edition, but don't know how to fix it. I have downloaded all the updates and fixes from palm one and frankly am so frustrated. I am computer literate so if there are some instructions you could give me, I would be able to follow most of them. I thank you for your help. I dont' want to have to order another serial cable if I can fix the USB problem.

Hello glowygirl, and welcome to 1src!

When you installed Palm Desktop, did your Win XP account have the admin role applied to it? It is the most common cause for not being able to HotSync a Palm with a USB connection.

I doubt this will solve your problem, but perhaps it will help someone who is hunting down a similar issue.
If I hook up my Zire via USB and THEN run HotSync, the transfer doesn't happen. HotSync runs on the PDA for a bit, then claims that it couldn't find a connection to the PC.
I have since learned to boot HotSync first, then power on my PDA, then plug in the USB cable and then run a Sync.

I don't know why it does this; I run a Celeron 1.7 on Windows XP Pro and have tried both Palm "Instapp" & PalmOne "Quick Install" - both require that I do the above procedures in the order I listed them. When I forget to boot the Palm installation software first, I have to restart my computer to get it to work.
