I am trying to reduce to file size of a bitmap image. In Paint Shop Pro I deminishing the resolution in the "resize" dialogue box. Changing the resolution of the image without changing the deminsion, does not affect the file size.
Either the app is buggy and not truely deminishing the resolution...
or bitmaps file sizes are not affected by resoulution.
The second option would suprise me if that is true. Can anyone tell me with confidence that you can change the file size of a bitmap without changing the deminsions of the image. If so, what process are you using. Thanks.

Ok, first, rename the file's extension from .bmp to .jpg . Then open the file/pic. Click on top left, save as. Choose the option "jpeg". After this, the file should be decreased.
2 is true. The resolution only affects the printouts.
By the way, you can also decrease the file size by decreasing the number of colours if you want the file to be in bmp format.

A jpg without a doubt decreases the size of the file, but the file output must be bmp. I am setting as image for a background in Wassup. The converter seems to only handle bmp's.
Also I did toy around with color reduction without success, I'll give it a shot again and take it down lower. Hopefully I'll have a picture left when it's all said and done.
The skin background has a 64k limit for its file size. Too bad.
I have created a background for wassup in Hires+ size and 8 bit color format. The background file is only 60kb for mine...
Are your images in 8 bit color format? If they are, they should have the same file size...

I have taken the bmps all the down to 8 which did get the file sizes down to 36k for one and 34k for the other. The skin maker still was unable to to compile the images due apparently to the compression process with in the skinmaker. The issue is addressed in the instruction manual. I am getting an error stating that the image "compressed too big". The author states the following...
"If your skin fails to compile, and the View Pilrc Output has a message similar to this: "data/Wassup_BG.rcp:14: error: bmp comressed too big to enter in version 2 format..." This means that wer not enough solid color areas in the picture"...
I do appreciate knowing now that the resolution is not capable of affecting the file size of a bmp, and also the advise to adjust the color depth which is capable of reducing the file size. Now I'll just deal with dissapointment of fighting this skin for so long and losing. The image I was trying use for the background is the XP theme called "Bliss". It's a nice scene of a blue sky with clouds above a bright grassy hill. Oh well.
I understand the problem now.. Sorry I cannot be of much help.
Better luck on your next skin!:)
