Has anyone used Cingular with EDGE Technology via Bluetooth on their Palm. I'm currently using T-Mobile's GRPS and was wondering if Edge would be much faster. What phone are you using?

i have a nokia 6620 with at&t (now cingular, of course) and it is noticeably faster than a non-EDGE connection. i used to use a sony ericsson t68i to surf the web via bluetooth on a clie nx70v and it was quite slow. slow enough for me to try to occupy myself by reading something else as a page loaded. when i default to doing that while a page loads on my t5, it's loaded by the time i put the t5 down as i go to pick something up to read. i need to get out of the habit of doing that now. :p

want me to time something for you? pick a site and i'll time how long it takes to load on my t5 via my 6620.

How much do you pay per month for the EDGE service? I am currently using T-mobile's GPRS data plan, and while I agree that it is SLOW, it's also pretty cheap, ($20 per month on top of my voice plan.)

i have a pretty basic data plan which is just sufficient to check my email (using my phone as a bluetooth modem for my powerbook) and do some light browsing. it's just 4mb per month (i know - it doesn't sound like much but i somehow never go over that since i'm almost always near a wi-fi hotspot or ethernet connection) and it costs $12.99. at&t's unlimited data plan is $24.99. i think there's another thread here that talks about how this is actually a great deal in comparison to what cingular is now offering, so i'll hold on to my at&t plan until my contract is up.

there are no extra charges for EDGE. as i understand it, it's technology in the phone itself that is able to take advantage of higher bandwidth transfer technology in the network. you just have be sure you have an EDGE-capable phone, of course. last time i checked, there weren't many for at&t, but there could be many more now with cingular.

Cliegirl,
Did you have any problems finding a Bluetooth driver for the T5 with your Nokia 6620? I thought about the Motorola 551 and am unable to find a Bluetooth driver. Even PalmOne said good luck. They don't have time to write drivers for all the different phones coming out.(paraphrased) I was advised to look to the phone vendor.

since there are no drivers available for the 6620, i just tried each nokia driver one at a time, and one of them (for the nokia 3650) worked! i'm not sure how or why, but it does.

if you get a new phone, there's no way to know in advance if this method will work for you. is there any way you can borrow that phone model (or bring your T5 to a cell phone store that has a working floor sample) to try it out?

The Moto stack is slightly different and palmOne hasnt been able to customize, yet, the BT drivers for it. Should be coming as more and more Moto owners do complain about BT not working between the devices.

For the latest in what phones are compatable, see the Phone Link Driver Update at palmone.com/us/support and that should help.
