I just stumbled on the following on the My.sony site (http://www.my.sony.com)
felicar/w
Felica Card – S860/SE1 and PaSoRi reader/writer – RC-S320
Your Price: $29.99 + 500 PTS
The Felica card secures websites when the reader is attached to your computer. Also, you can use the Felica card for Sony purchases
From cardtechnology.com (http://www.cardtechnology.com/cgi-bin/readstory.pl?story=20041201CTMI661.xml):
Sony in October began a test of a contactless card and reader in the United States, but just for use as a loyalty card that members of its Sony Club rewards program can use for easier Web access and to take advantage of special offers.
Cardholders lay the contactless card on the reader and enter a personal identification number to access a customized Web page and a toolbar that provides easy access to Web sites of Sony and partner companies. The card also stores user names and passwords for easy log-on to favorite Web sites.
I'm not sure whether the My.sony assimilation completed or if I am just momentarily fascinated by the Orwellian implications of RFID in my house. ;)
INMO, the recent attempt at a comprehensive pass system which failed was Msfts' Passport. Before that, I liked Swatch's Cyber-commander concept though the price scared me.
I think that if you pay to get Sony's Felica in the U.S., you get coupons worth roughly $50 on My.sony purchases.
