View Full Version : Jackflash, BackupMan and Wifi - how to make it work

Sorry if this is old news. I just got my Wifi card yesterday, so I was looking for the optimal setup. I remember seeing Larry say in a few posts that he uses MSBackup because no other backup program properly restores the Wifi driver.

So last night I installed everything and was emailing and surfing just fine. Then I decided to test this out. I made a backup with BackupMan and one with MSBackup. I did a hard reset, then restored my BackupMan set. I couldn't get the Wifi stuff to work. It still showed all the right stuff on the Network settings, but it just wouldn't work. So I did another hard reset, then restored my MSBackup set. This time, it didn't work at first, but I went to the Network settings, hit Edit, but didn't do anything, and then it worked, so it seemed that it just needed to be run once to become properly updated.

I really like BackupMan over MSBackup, primarily because it has automated backups, which are more reliable. So what I did was clear out a bunch of room in Flash, then moved both Netfront and the CFWL100Neti file to Flash. For the point I'm going to make with this post (trust me, I'm slowly getting there :)), it didn't matter that I moved Netfront, but the driver file was essential. I then did new backups with each backup app, did a hard reset, then tested my BackupMan set. This time, it behaved as the MSBackup set had done before. Once I went to the Network settings once and hit Edit, then hit OK without changing anything, it worked fine.

So now I can have a reliable, automated backup, and still have my wireless work after I restore a backup. Best of both worlds!! And with Jackflash, I still have nearly 4MB free in RAM!!! Life is good :)

How did you clear out a bunch of room in Flash? Can you delete programs from ROM using JackFlash?

No, I had already used JF to move a bunch of apps to Flash, so what I meant by "clearing out room" was that I moved them back to RAM.

hmm, long story rldunn, thing is moving net-front to flash might be only possible with a non-euro-clié, right; did not check out jackflash3beta but rumours have it that rom of euro-cliés might only have some 2,5 mb free and no jacksprat for os5 to hope for.

Thanks for clearing that up rldunn.

Right, and that's a good point. One other thing I forgot to mention is the BackupMan won't even backup Netfront because it knows it can't restore it, so it doesn't waste room in the backup with it. So this is a trick that will only work on US NX devices.

I have had the same WiFi issue, but not sure why. In anycase, if that's all that is wrong after a full restore, I am happy!

I never tried Backupman, does that allow for rolling backups? I am afraid to get caught short because of a good backup getting corrupted and not know it. The main reason I deliberately backup manually after making changes. Sort of like having a system restore in Windows XP.

I also keep 3 full rolling backup copies of the memory stick too. I have had situations where I had to wipe everything clean. Thank goodness I had good backups. I have one 32mb stick just to keep two backups of RAM on it. Experience is the best teacher, ha-ha! One drawback with MS Backup is not being able to encrypt it.

I never tried Backupman, does that allow for rolling backups?Backupman is very cool; you should check it out!! It does have rolling automated backups; there's a preference setting where you tell it how many automated backups to keep. I have it set to keep the last 3. And you seem to be able to do unlimited manual backups, which use a different naming convention, so I'll use those before running beta tests.

Plus it has all the bells and wistles that I've seen on other backup apps. Backup can be X weeks, days, or hours; I haven't seen too many with the hours option. Selective restore works very well and is very fast!! Really, the whole process, backups and restores have been fast. And most importantly, they've been perfect restores; I've tested this a lot since I do a lot of hard resets while beta testing.

So after we convert you to BackupMan, next week we'll work on getting you to try JF so you can take advantage of this trick, plus have all that extra space!! :)

Your right! So far Backupman is very nice and yes it's much faster!

Still thinking on JF :).

Thanks!

Thank-you to everyone who suggested BackupMan... it's very handy.

If, like me, you don't want to waste 2MB of precious flash on NetFront, another way to get around the problem of restoring it after a hard reset is to move it to the MS using PowerRUN. After restoring the backup with BackupMan, all you need to do is run Update Shortcuts from the PowerRUN menu.

Anyone know of a Windows desktop utility that can periodically (say once a week) backup the contents of the MS to the PC during a HotSync?

You don't need PowerRun for Backupman, just leave it the/Palm/Launcher folder, unless you use the scheduler.

I have Blue Sync that does what you want, but it's so slow, takes forever to back up. It's a lot quicker to just copy the MS to a spare folder on your hard drive.

I was referring to using PowerRUN for NetFront which is the only way to launch it from MS.

It does take a LONG time to backup the MS, and it's either every time or never (unless you change the setting manually). I currently have it set to not backup my MS everytime, but a few times a week, I turn it on for the next hotsync only.

Oh okay, I misread your post, sorry! Blue Nomad's Backup Buddy may have what you want.
