The screen hinge assembly was severely bent after my NX suffered a fall... no scratches to speak of but the metal retaining bracket on the screen part had "popped" out of its frame. I removed the white plastic trim surrounding the screen (slide, do not pull it... there are little white plastic *thin* tabs that hold it to the frame) and removed all the screws. Loosened the frame and pushed the retaining bracket back in and tightened everything back up. Good as new!

I have not, but i did make the techs at sony send pictures to substantiate their claim of "liquid damage" to my nx, so I will post a link to the pix if they send them.

I have and being an ex sony tech I still have some of the service manuals for most of the Clies. It shows you step by step how to disassemble.

Could you please post those? Are they computer documents?

They are pdfs. Which one do you want. I have all models up to NR, which is almost the same as the NX as far as diassemble.

I had no luck with the link either. BTW, I don't recommend anyone taking their clie apart unless they really know what they are doing.

I agree n2, i just like to know more about the guts of the items, i have worked as a tech for years and Sony does not like to spread the in house manuals around, i just like having that sort of thing for down the ( out of warranty) road

Thanks for those that replied to the original post. I've taken apart several of my older PocketPC's but since my Clie is actually the one I use everyday I didn't want to take it apart - at least not just yet.

mdharris, since you worked for Sony, can you tell us if they are the evil corporation that most of Cliesource makes them out to be?

Does ANYBODY know where I can find a screw-driver for the Star-head screws tha Sony used??

One of the screw which secures the screen section to the pivot mechanism of my NX has worked loose, and I just want to tighten it back down. When it started wobbling side-to-side I was afraid something had broken -- No, no, no, noooooooo! The nausia has subsided now that it just appears to be a loose screw. ;)

Today after ~ 2 weeks of growing affection for my newly ebay-purchased Grey NX70 and the screen is cracked !

In glorious slooow motion it slipped from my grasp, did a few 360's & half-pipe to land side on over the edge of a stone step. Memory stick and wifi slot protector went flying, heartbeat stopped and after a lunge for the power button i saw the crack approx 1/2 way down spreading across the full width. <editorial>

So i am gutted to pieces having recently sold my trusty palm Vx after 4 years of faithfull use to get this techno triumph Clie.

It was purchased 2nd hand so i've no warranty. Its grey so chance of getting a scrapper' unit off someone on ebay for spares are slim.

Now i'm mechancally and electrically trained and capable of replacing most bits of techno gadgetry, but i need a few words of advice & help.

I need a manual that shows the assembly/disassembly sequences of the screen/hinge. As well as the bits from my local Sony Shop. Any one with any links to the manuals ? or the cost of the bits ?

I dont want to get caught in that 'too expensive to repair mate' trap. And its grey which is fab for looks, poor for availabilty of bits.

Very very sad today.

I feel your pain. I dropped my NR New Year's Eve. While I didn't see a physical crack, the LCD was totally gone when I turned the unit on. It hurts. I hope you can get it fixed alright. I took my NR's screen apart after it fell... I have pictures laying around somewhere. Let me know if you want them.

I've taken the screen assembly apart...

Goes like this:

For orientation, the base of the screen is near the hinge assembly
the top of the screen is the opposite end of the hinge assembly

Remove the 2 screws holding the plastic trim along the edge, they're near the base of the screen

Slide off the plastic trim, slide, do not pull. Slide towards the top of the screen, about 2-3mm.

Remove the 2 screws under the trim along the edge of the screen

remove the 2 screws on the base of the screen (base being near the hinge assembly.

After that, the entire screen assembly can be taken apart.

Watch for the wires!

Sorry akreas I was a laptop tech for Sony not a Clie tech. Even then all those guys did was swap parts they did not take time to troubleshoot every unit.

Jay, i am pretty sure that the screen from the grey is the same as the screen from the silver. The difference between the two was cosmetic, was'nt it??

Just trying to help, if i am wrong, please show a little mercy.
Thanx

Today parts are cheaper than labor. Some entities can possibly repair sub assemblies as they would specialize in that. Repairing small circuit boards with surface mount devices in some cases is just not practical anymore. So the whole sub unit or board would just be replaced.

For example, today if a motherboard on a desktop PC would go bad, no one would repair them. The time it would require to trouble shoot with the necessary tools and equipment required, far exceeds the cost of a new motherboard!

Anyone know where to get the screwdrive that fits to take the clie apart? I thought I had all the weird bits out there until I saw these!

Get an old Visor stylus! The irony kills me! The screwdriver built into the Visor stylus fits perfectly.

[Start Edit Here]

Correction, it fits the NR series perfectly.. but I didn't realize the NX had a 5 tip star pattern. What in the world?? Is that to keep us from doing our own repairs? Arg Sony!

Anything to make things more difficult. You should also notice that the battery door is a regular small jewelers phillips sized 4 point head.

The one battery supplier says use a flat bladed jewelers screwdriver and it has worked for me.

Of course Sony doesn't want anyone taking the unit apart for obvious reasons, but a lot of manufacturers do that.

Jmod - I'm guessing the only difference was indeed cosmetic. Only casing/trim edges are different. The screen should be identical.

n2ifp is correct when it comes to parts. I need to get these manuals on line so you can download them and get an idea of the parts within the unit. There really are not that many parts. When I was a tech and we had something like a Motherboard or Modem board that was bad we replaced the whole thing we do not troubleshoot to component level.

I have learned to work on the NXs and spread to NR and other Clies. Frustrated w/ Sony i have started a service, note the word SERVICE, to fix them. I don't make much money at it, but it provides something needed. You can buy small screw driver sets w/ small phillips and flat blade drivers. If you are lucky enough to have a NR70 or NX60 Sony uses these stupid little star screws, which are a PAIN!! However, the smallest of the flat blade drivers will work.

They're call torx bits and yes, they have 6 points. My NX 60 case screws are 5-point. Second-best bet is probably a flat blade screwdriver for eyeglass screws.

BTW: I too would be very appreciative to obtain on-line manuals for repairing the NX series.

Does anyone have a link to directions on disassembly of the NX hinge mechanism? I have "gently" tried removing it with no success.

I have a working NX60 with a crack near the power button and would like to replace it with a unbroken piece from a non-working unit.
