View Full Version : Has anyone done this!?!?!

I wonder if anyone had done something as dumb as I have.

I installed Docs to Go on my Tungsten T5, forgetting that it was already installed on it! (Call it old age, a senior moment, or just plain being dumb!). It synced and installed just fine. But the first time I went to open it, the screen just started getting lighter and lighter, and then I turned it off. Then I woke up and realized that I didn't need it on there, so I removed it. But I am afraid it damaged the T5.

After that, whenever I tried to access docs, the screen went light, and I had to soft reset to turn it off. It also started resetting itself when I had it in my shirt pocket, but would hang on the Palm Powered screen. I had to push the button to reset to functional. But then when I tried entering some programs, such as eReader, it would work but I would get a fatal exception on exit. I have hard reset it twice, but it seems to be getting worse, sometimes it will turn on with a scrambled screen while it is in my pocket. Fortunately, it was within the exchange/return period of where I bought it, so I was able to get a new one.

But I am wondering, did I cause this, or is this one of the ways a T5 will die when it has a problem? Any information would be appreciated.

I can't believe it was DTG that caused that. I've had to "install over" at least once and never had that problem (Tungsten|C, but whatever). DTG manipulates the screen some, but not any more than a launcher or a game. And, with the number of people who use DTG (most of them "power users" who populate boards like this one), if this is something DTG did to a lot of units someone would be talking class-action lawsuit by now.

I think it's coincidental. Perhaps in all that handling and docking/re-docking your T5 took a static-electricity hit?

I do all of my hotsyncing via bluetooth, so it was never phyically hooked to the computer. It just seemed strange that it happened the same time that I installed it. I had never had any problems prior to that of any kind. After that, I kept getting fatal errors, errors which caused it to reset by itself, and then turning itself on and hanging at the Palm Powered screen.

I had a weird problem as well on my T5. I apparently deleted a file I wasn't supposed to one day whilst cleaning up after removing some apps and I got a fatal error. OK, no problem, soft reset time. After reset the screen froze at the Palm logo with a large blinking line across the top of the display. OK, so I did a hard reset. After hitting the up direction on the five-way when prompted, I got the same frozen screen, blinking cursor thing.

After playing around with it for a while (multiple soft and hard resets) I got to the screen where you calibrate the display. If I didn't press anything for a few seconds I would get a frozen screen with the blinking line again ... BUT if I was quick enough to tap all three targets the next time would do a soft reset it wouldn't freeze until it got to the prefs confirmation screen ... if I hit "done" right away and hit the home hard button I could get to the favorites screen before lock up. So finally I found that if I powered off immediately when I got to favorites or prefs I could then power back on normally and the T5 would not lock up.

I found there were a lot of missing files and hot-syncing would not work at all, so I did a zero out reset by setting a password and then doing a hard reset. I had to go through the whole routine again with powering off the machine right after getting to the prefs or home screen and then powering on as normal. I managed to reinstall the T5 update and now everything is working as normal. Soft resets no longer lock me up.

But I stilll wonder just what the heck happened and when will it happen again ... unfortunately I am well past the no questions asked return limit at Fry's.

apparently the forum is having trouble accepting replies, because I tried posting a suggestion and it didn't take....... maybe the forum needs a HARD reset?

Would draining the battery work? It helped my frozen T3 more than once....

I promise didn't use any "4 letter words"...... just a software application and flash memory....

Since the memory on the T5 is non-volatile, draining the batteries doesn't do much ... which normally is a good thing :-)

I've installed, re-installed, over-istalled, uninstalled (etc) DTG many times without issue. Well, at least without any of the issues raised above. So i doubt that DTg is the culprit.
Cheers,

For the T5 Docs To Go is in ROM and installs itself in RAM, then when you update it via the web, the RAM version is overwritten. I've deleted DTG and reinstalled it without a problem.

I suspect it was a hardware issue. I exchanged the first one for a new one, and within a week had a similar problem with the second new unit. It only happened once, but that was one time too many. I also had several issues installing the WiFi SD card from Palm. So I took everything back to the store, and now I am back to using my Treo 600 and UX50. Looking for a good deal on a TH55 if anyone knows of one???? ;)
