I just got my UX50!! One little thing though, it has a minor screen whine. It was used, so no sending it to Sony for a fix. :(
I've searched and searched the forums, but haven't been able to find out how to fix it. Is it even possible?

Nope. It's a a screen issue. You'd have to replace the screen.
Sorry.

most of us have it...it's not because you got it used...it's a factory problem...we just deal with it... there is no guarantee that you wont have the same problem with a new screen.

I have it too, it's actually gotten a lot worse recently. I heard that if you send it in to get fixed, the battery life will return much worse. Also, nowadays most SONY techs doesn't even touch this problem. You'll get used to it.

Yea, my UX40 had a louder whine than my UX50. It's so silent, I have to put my ear to it to hear it screaming in agony. Trust me, the whining sound will blend into the sound of your PC and sounds all around you. As .PoNeH said, you'll get used to it.

I searched all forums, 1src and others, and found lots of interesting information on why the whine occurs in the UX series. BTW, it happens in non-Sony devices as well. Just a fact of the technology.
Best approach, by far IMHO, is a decent screen protector. Yes, as simple as that sounds. It needs to be reasonably "thick", not one of the cheaper versions. I found an original PEGA-SP40 (Sony's screen protector) and it works miracles. Whine is covered up nicely. Trust me, it works. Find a piece of plastic, and put it in front of your screen....magically, it goes away. $15 fix to something people are still trying to resolve. Best $15 I've spent.

The whine exists. Sony denies because it will cost $$$. Look at the expert experience http://www.1src.com/forums/showthread.php?t=39943
Without sounding like Mel Gibson in Conspiricy Theory...I have a recent repair on my UX and I mentioned the screen whine and I am still told they don't know anything about the whine...why mention something so critical that would cause such a loss of $$??

Probably 99% of us have a screen whine, but I noticed that my screen protector (Martin Fields http://www.overlayplus.com ) really cuts down on the whine. These are also the best screen protectors I have used, and I think other people will agree.

Did anyone notice that when you touch the screen, the actual whine increases?

Not for me... my whine is very slight, and typically is heard a little louder from different angles.

yeah, me too... like nimiety said, the whine depends on the angle the screen has to your ear. when I hold so that I hear nearly no whine and I touch the screen with the stylus, the whining increases. I guess this is because of the screen being bent slightly by the pressure of the stylus (look at the reflection of your face or something and then tap on the screen to see the bending effect) and so is bent towards your ear again.
I am waiting for my brando workshop screen protector to arrive, probably this does really block some of the whine.

What? When I touch my screen, the whine decreases. Not only it decreases, but it completely stops.

and another observation.. I'm afraid I have to disagree with SONY with their statement accusing the backlight as a reason of whining screen. (quoted above) because when you turn the backlight with the shortcut "CTRL + L" the whine continues.. :)

confirmed.
but I am sure the whine comes from the top part, i.e. the "lid" of the ux

When I press my screen with the stylus, the whining completely stops. I'm thinking the noise might arise from loose parts. Now to find which part exactly.

Just for your interest - I doubt if a mod for the UX50 would be developed as its discontinued

Sorry for the late response. I bought my PEGA-SP40 from one of the Sony Stores in Toronto. Simply asked if they had any laying around. Lucky for me, they had one, and also the new privacy filter PEGA-PF50. Both were $15 Cdn.
I tried some of the other ones via ebay, but they did not work (basically just a film). The G2 product is about as close to the original Sony.
Seriously, I tried everything. Pressing the screen, using small jams in corners. Basically was obsessed about the whine, now, never a worry. Just trying to help others out with a simple fix.

Also, while I don't have the URL, the issue is not unique to Sony. The screen is a Sharp unit, also used in the Tungsten models. The fix there was to use an underclocker for the ARM processor, which seems to work (according to users) well.
In my desperation, I used Cliepet's Underclock program. While it works great (to change the cpu cycles), there was no change in the whine :(

its funny how sony used sharp lcds on the ux50 and palmone had sony lcds on some of their T3s.

oh i get it now, sharp made the whine on purpose on our lcds so the ux50 looks more inferior to their sharp zaurus! ah ha!

For me the whine (almost) stops when I slightly push the part of the screen closest to the hinge. You can try to put a strip of paper or thin cardboard and push it between the screen and the frame.
So try pushing the screen gently to see if it works for you. You have to be carefull you are not activating/starting things by accident.

My UX50 has no whine, but I had a experience on it that it won't turn on, no matter what I do. Hard reset, soft reset, warm reset, etc... The only thing that worked was draining the battery for weeks then charging it back to life. Now I don't trust my UX50 anymore. If it happens again, I'll send it back to Sony for repairs.

I am not worried about repairs for my UX50. I still have 5 months worth of SONY's 1 year warranty plus I have CompUSA's 2 year exchange warranty. So if SONY is going to refuse repairs, then off I go to CompUSA to have it exchange for a brand new unit, probably a PPC this time. Unless the rumors are true about an OS6 CLIE. :D

You THINK or you TRIED?
If it doesn't work for you, that doesn't mean it's working for nobody.
Also note that the side of the screen that works for me, might be a different part of the screen for someone else.

I'm still hoping for the best for Palm OS as I hate to switch. :)
I hate Palm for not being able to match Sony's handhelds.
I do hope Tapwave or Garmin would take over. ;)
