I find myself considering this for the first time.... I opted not to get the new computer this year, though I admit half the fun is monkeying with the computer not just the increases in speed. :)

I have a decent system
AMD64 3200 754 pin (replaced by 939)
1 gig PC3200 memory
Geforce 6800 GT 256Mb

not bad.... will it last me another year before I ditch it? :) probably, but I am missing my fun. :)

A replacement CPU cooler would cost me all of $50-$100, I am not even considering vapor cooling (I'd buy a new machine rather than buy a $1000 in cooling equipment). Not sure I am up to water cooling yet, but even those are around $200 plus or minus depending on options. Maybe.

Anyhow, I find myself with a really nice stock chip wondering... could I boost it up to 3400 or 3700 equivalent? hmmmm.... The motherboard has all the internal clock stepping and temperature monitoring necessary....

The brain be working.... shoot myself in the foot? or live and let live? :)

Oh yeah? :D
Well, my Sun had a BUILT-IN ISDN MODEM! Top THAT!

ISDN, I'm still on a 14.4.

Yeah, my Color VGA is a bad boy. http://www.bainne.com/fun/blah_happy.gif

I'm thinking about moving to a full tower and adding a second 5.4" drive.

Heard about those new half-height hard drives? They're supposed to be wicked fast.

Ppsh, you're jealous of my ISDN? I saw them installing a HIPPI line over at Nasa Langley!

yeah, well, work is faster than me again... I hate it when that happens.... :)

Doooo it. My XP 2500 is still running away nicely at a XP3200.

Also buy a new case. Something about transplanting a computer makes it feel new. :)

On second thought, just buy one of these (http://www.apple.com/macmini/) ; It will keep your mind occupied so that you don't toast your current system by accident.

You know what, that doesn't matter. Software is the heart of a computer, and that's why I just installed MS Bob. It is the future, you know...

MS Bob runs too slow on my computer. :(

A good heatsink will cost you ~$50 max, it should get you pretty far. Watercooling will help a little, but you definetly don't need all that extra speed.

Get a socket 939 3000+ or 3200+. Also get some low latency PC3200.

getting a socket 939 means replacing motherboard, replacing cpu, and like you said, probably replacing memory, that is what I was trying to avoid. Memory is the easiest, the place I buy from will take my memory back and give me credit for it, they did last time, I bought this 1 gig for $10 a chip by turning back in my PC2700 memory. But they can't do that for all equipment.

well actually cooling is not a problem - I just leave my laptop in a bucket of ice+water for about an hour ... :p :D ...

I have been thinking of overclocking my video card but I first wanna give it more RAM - I believe that can be done by "lending" some RAM from the CPU itself - that could solve some VRAM issue but then it would need a lot more to actually make it work ... like maybe a fire-brigade ...

And I hate it when you post your specs and call it "decent" - :( :D :D

Well the guy from the local computer store offered me a deal I have to mull over.... since I don't overclock yet, he's willing to take my processor in trade for an upgrade price....

I could get a 3700AMD64 754 for just over $200. I'd say that was pretty decent of him.

I am still debating... but I think I am going to take the shop owner's deal.... :) I hate the dangers of overclocking. :) actually I hate voiding warrenties (though did on my ReplayTV box).
