Supermicro X5DA8-G2 motherboard
2 gig of DDR400 memory
800Mhz front side bus (hey, not bad for a XEON which has been behind)
dual 3.6ghz EM64t XEON chips
10000rpm 72gig SATA drive (boot)
5 x 147gig Ultra 320 10krpm drives in RAID stripe set (data drive)
Geforce 6800 Ultra 256mb PCIe

ahhhhhh.... now I just have to figure out how to make it mine.... :D

I think I know how to make one mine.... We had 3 on order, one has yet to be placed (mine). Mine was to be the same, but dual SATA drives for dual boot, and 8gig of RAM so that I could test windows 64bit properly. But I recognized that it would help our tech who builds landscapes more, so after testing I was going to give it to him.... :(

we gave away a demo system for a test support, it went classified, so it cannot come back. One of these was supposed to be that system, but we couldn't get it in fast enough so offered the previous system in stead. I will give up my X5DA8 as a demo system, talk our tech into taking this one and moving his X5DA8 into demo replacement. and I will get one of the new ones. That means that both of us will get them, and we will give our older, but more "tested and stable" systems to customers.... :)

yeahhhhhh, that works for me.... :)

Time to stress test the hardware with Half Life 2 and Doom 3!

I only wish I had a 512mb ultra.... ;) then I could test that ultra texture mode (uncompressed high resolution) on Doom 3.... :) you know, I learn things to help work.... :)

You can always recommend that the system's falling short of your graphics requirements. ;)

I want to say wow, but I don't know what that all means. It's been a long time since I was responsible for researching hardware for our CADD systems. How does this system compare to say an IBM PC jr. or PC XT286?

about as well as a Palm II to your XT286. ;)

wasn't there a dilbert about giving dilbert a 286 to do 3D graphics with? I will have to find that one....

32-bit Halfbreed!!! :p :p :p :D *kidding*

Cool. I couldn't work with that ram though. But if you ever have the urge to send me a descent rendering PC, I'll take it. :)

halfbreed, that's all I ever heard.... :(

yeah, I am trying to get the 8gig RAM on order... 2gig just ain't enough... but it is the windows limit *gag* on 32bit....

I don't know why (actually I do, but I don't why someone doesn't change it), but memory speed on Xeon workstations are always behind market, same with BUS speed and very few have graphics. There is only one maker of SLI Xeon boards (tyan) and my project leader won't buy from them because they burned us on nearly 100 painful boards in the past. Bad quality control. They put all the effort into CPU (1-4) on workstation boards, and then make a similar graphics workstation (2 processor) board as an afterthought.

At least this isn't far behind market. :)

Ahh, I didn't mean that. :(

Ouch on the Tyan. I think I'll be avoding them for all future purchases.

I've noticed that workstation boards are generally about a year or 2 behind, just so the components are proven more reliable.

Windows. Blalh!!! Let's ramble about other OS options in this thread. :D

There is a way to put 4 Gigs into a Windows PC, with some extension thingy. But only a few things support it.

you can use a virtual ram buffer and exchange information in blocks with extended memory and use more, yes I know. You can also trick windows into halfing it's 2gig virtual memory so you can run 3gig real and 1gig virtual memory.

I have had to do the virtual buffer exchange under DOS and windows 3.1 and 95... I was hoping to avoid writing it yet again for XP. :) the physical process changes every time they create a new limit even if the concept is the same... *sigh*

and as for other OS's... THAT is why the SATA is in a removeable frame. :D
