View Full Version : Wireless hotsync to more than one PC

Another wireless hotsync question I'm afraid.

I've set up a wireless home network, using a Netgear router. I can do a wireless hotsync fine with the main desktop PC.

However, I've just added a lap top to the home network. The lap top can access the Internet fine via the Netgear router, but I can't seem to be able to do a wireless hotsync between the UX50 and the lap top (hotsync via cable works OK).

On the ux50, I've tried changing the Primary PC Address (under 'Primary PC Setup in the Hotsync application) to match the IP address of the lap top rather than my main desktop, but this doesn't seem to work. Is there something else I need to do?

Try setting the primary PC name to !!

Just a guess...

I hate to ask but...you do have the Hotsync software installed on the laptop, right?

Thanks smeggie. Yes, I have installed the hotsync app on the desktop! I can hotsync OK via cable, but not wireless.

In the hotsync app I have the PC name set to !! and the IP address of the lap top under PC address, just like I do when I'm syncing to my main desktop, but no joy. I'm wondering if it's something to do with having two computers on the one wireless LAN.

I know this defeats the point of being wireless but do a cabled hotsync with your laptop and THEN try to sync wirelessly with it. For some reason I think this will work and you might have to do this with each computer before wireless-enabling it.

make sure you put a check mark on the hotsync manager on your laptop toolbar, and then go to the setup then network and put check mark on your hotsync name, and then go to Tcp/Ip setting and copy that IP address to your clie's hotsync primary pc address, this IP should be in the same submask of your router. Hope it help!

bazman: I hope this doesn't offend you, because it's not supposed to. Don't take it that way! Ok, with that said, why do you need to hotsync to two of your own PCs at home? I don't see any benefit really. Again, this is not to start something, I just want to know what your line of thought is.

But to fix your problem, I would make sure you have Network checked under your hotsync options. You might also check firewall software you have running on your laptop, although that shouldn't be an issue since the Clie is also internal to the network. I would also check to see that your laptop has a static IP. It may be changing IPs and your Clie is trying to sync to the old IP. just some thoughts...... :D

Smeggie, no offence taken, it's a fair question !

I'm wanting to use my UX50 as a way of keeping my calendar, to do list, contacts etc in sync and up to date between my lap top, my home desktop and my work PC. I sync the UX50 daily with my work PC and my home desktop PC, so my calendar, tasks etc at work are always in sync with my home desktop. However, the desktop is in my study, the lap top I use around the house - I'd like to be able to fire up the lap top and know that it's got the latest version of my calendar etc on there.

I know I'm probably being dumb here as I'm sure there's a way for me to network Outlook at home so that both the lap top and the home desktop use the same calendar etc, but I haven't figured out how to do this yet. Until I do, I'm wanting to use the UX50 to keep everything in sync.

Make sense?

And thanks for all the suggestions, I've done all of this but it still doesn't work. I'm going to reinstall the palm software and start from scratch again.

Sorry, miss-read the thread, that last post was directed at Cerberus not Smeggie :o

Have you checked to see if your laptop is running a firewall? Windos XP with service pack 2 will automatically block everything unless you specify otherwise.

Have you tinkered with something like this? Net Sync 1.1? (http://www.palmgear.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=software.showsoftware&PartnerREF=&siteid=1&prodID=45423)

Just another thought to add to the pile...

Oh yeah, this is going to be fun now. Yes, you can just link up your laptop to your desktop and use the desktop's Outlook file. Possibly much more reliable in the long run than using your UX as a stop-gap method. Really, you just need to share your desktop's Outlook file directory on your network. then point your laptop to look on the network share for that Outlook file. At least that 'should' do it. The only problems you may encounter is trying to have both the desktop and laptop using the file at the same time. I'm not entirely sure what the permissions are for something like that. If it was a Server 2003 machine, Shadowcopy would take care of that. I will try some things here, since I have a few PCs sitting around and get back to you something that works - that is, if you're even interested in doing it without the Clie. :D

Hmmm. My problem is similar except that all I want to do is sync my home outlook with my CLie and my work outlook. Factors to consider:

I've never synced the clie with the homebox in outlook.

I don't have any other way to sync with the homebox except Bluetooth (because the twat that sold it to me didn't send the USB sync nor did he tell me the WLAN was broken).

Should the CLie hotsyn primary address for the homebox be the address of the BT adapter or the network adapter?

Anyone know why Intellisync won't let you start the sync from the desktop? There also seems to be no provision for setting up multiple sync profiles, unless I'm missing something.

Any clues will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Go to PalmGear (http://www.palmgear.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=software.answernew&PartnerREF=&siteid=1&keyword=sync), search for "sync" and start reviewing all of the apps that come up. You'll find something.

Or just click on PalmGear above because I did it for ya. :)

Cerberus, thanks for the reply. I think you're right, rather than focusing on getting the clie to sync with the lap top, I'm going to re-focus my efforts on getting the laptop to use the desktop Outlook file wirelessly. Then I only have to sync the Clie with one machine (the desktop), much less hassle. Any conflicts from having both desktop and laptop trying to use Outlook at once shouldn't be a big deal, I can always get off my lazy backside and just shut down outlook on one of the machines ! I'll let you know how I get on.

What I noticed was the problem when I used my WiFi Card to hotssync was that when I set my Primary PC Name on my device to the actual name of my PC, it did not sync but when I erased it and tried it again, it worked. Try not setting your Primary PC name on your device and make sure your Hotsync manager is up and that your name is checked under the network tab. It should work if all this is done.

What would be cool would be a SIMULTANEOUS Hotsync with two computers and one UX-50!!
