Anybody has experience with movie databases (something to help you browse through Blockbuster's DVDs)?
I'd like to have something searcheable by director, actors etc. with brief description and perhaps ratings.
What are you using and why?

TomeRaider has the IMDB.com databases, they also have a free version called Movie Raider. There's a HanDBase database for DVDs which has a 4 MB database of movies. There's a new program called Movie Mentor at Handango or www.moviementor.com.

MovieMentor seems just what the doctor ordered- well thought out, though the database of movies is rather skimpy. Hopefully it will be expanded, and I think the price is excellant if the database is updated as promised. I like the extensive lists available, even including future releases!

Yeah...I noticed that one of my favorite movies "Clue" was not listed! Geez!

Yup . . . I tried MovieMentor out too, and the movie database IS skimpy. I liked it, but I think I'll wait for HR+capabilities and VFS awareness . . .

If you haven't seen it, you've GOT to rent it! Tim Curry plays the butler at the mansion...Madeline Kahn as Mrs. White, Ellen Burnstyn as Mrs. Peacock, Martin Mull as Colonel Mustard, Leslie Ann Warren as Ms. Scarlet and Christopher Lloyd as Professor Plum (a man after my own heart...a psychiatrist! )
The movie is set in the mid-fifties...all the guests have been invited to dinner by Mr. Boddy but no one knows why. They are given pseudonyms aka the Clue games.
There are three different endings...when it was at the movies, you didn't know which ending you would see!
This is one of my FAVORITE movies! :D :D :D

Yes, I have "Clue" as my number three movie of all time (behind two other classic comedies from the period, Airplane! and Holy Grail). I think I've seen it 50 or so times and have all the dialog memorized.

Hi, MovieMentor here! It's great to see some discussion of our product and get some feedback from people who've actually used it. The missing 'Clue' thing has been rectified, plus I can't believe we didn't have Airplane in there.
Because a lot of people have PDAs with limited memory we were trying to keep the database as compact as possible. So when we chose the currently over 1800 movies in there, we started off with the best rated (users and critics), that we could find.
But we're adding all the time and if you feel YOUR favourites aren't there, let us know. If the database doesn't reflect our users' preferences, then we aren't doing what we set out to do.

TV Browser lets the user set the level of info wanted. Works well. If you need a small size, then you get less info. People with more room can d/l more information. Or allow people to choose, say 3 star and up . . .
Is 320x480 planned??
How about VFS awareness . . . ???

Kept Movie Mentor on my Clie for a couple of weeks. Now it's gone before the trial period is over.
- The database of the movies is VERY poor. Not sure where the reviews came from either, some don't sound too professional...
- It caused a fatal exception during one of the searches, I might have touched the screen while it was "thinking".
- After installing a hack on my PDA, the Mentor informed me that my "hardware signature have changed" and I need to go and get a new password or something on their site.
Not really worth the trouble....
Sorry Movie Mentor. You need to do more work on this one...

I don't think I've run into any problems. I agree the database could be better...maybe it could be based on the IMDB.com site
