Where can you get WiFi connection at public places? I know that there is some payed services out there, but I hear so much about the free connections. I havent found any or  maybe I am just looking in the wrong places. Maybe we need to start a new thread of a listing of free connections.....

Try this site... http://www.wi-fizone.org/zoneLocator.asp?TID=7

You can type your location and it will provide you with a list of WiFi networks in that area. Hope it helps.

Just wanted to comment on WiFi...

Besides a couple of hotels and the wireless lab at the university I attend (lets me check email while in Calc class), I haven't found any other hot spots where I live (Colorado Springs, CO). I built a new house a couple of years ago, wired it for network connections throughout, and vowed not to go wireless....until I got my WiFi card for my Clie.

Now, I think WiFi is an amazing thing and wish that it would become as common as telephones. Every public place should have an access point :)

It does wonders for portable connections (PDA's, laptops), and creates amazing connection possibilities. I wouldn't use it exclusively in my home, but coupled with my 100bT wired network, I couldn't do without!

I'm still frustrated that Northeastern University doesn't have it. :(

Its an engineering school for crying out loud.

I'm really surprised that there aren't more spots as well!! I work in Ann Arbor, which is generally considered a very tech-heavy place, but there's maybe 3 hot spots outside of the university, and only certain parts of the university have it. I'm also visiting Chicago next month, so I did a search of hot spots there, and they seem to be pretty spread out, with not a ton of them!! I was hoping that most hotels would have it by now, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Seems like it would be a really cheap selling point for places to offer it; hopefully it will really start to grow quickly.

Starbucks, If you can stomach their (so-called) coffee, it is SUPPOSED to be company wide in the US for them. As far as Chicago, there used to be a TON of warchalking in the downtown area but that has kinda disappeared. Not entirely sure if this is from better security or apathy.

Yeah, Starbucks has it, but you have to pay for the service. It isn't worth it unless you spend a LOT of time at Starbucks! ;)

Somebody posted this in another message and it's the best resource I've found for free Wi-Fi nodes:

A couple of weeks ago, I was in the Denver Airport and they had signs up about WiFi being available, but I never expected that, so my WiFi card was home.
