Are you having problems with other USB devices? Or do you have other USB devices to try?

Normally it wouldn't be the device with that kind of error. If it is then you would just simply need to reinstall Palm Desktop to get your drivers back.

If you don't have any other USB devies to try on that particular USB Hub on your computer, then you could see if your PDA will recognize on someone else's computer.

I've got exactly the same problem with the same model TJ35. I have other devices (usb modem, mp3 players, nokia mobile phone, scanner) working fine throught the same usb ports. I've re-installed palm desktop with no luck.
Everything installs fine, but then I connect the TJ35 and click hotsynch....XP detects a new device and says its an unknown device. Manually installing/updating the drivers from the installation cd just comes back with the message that the installed drivers are the best and it doesn't install anything.
I'm using Windows XP SP2 with all the latest crtitical updates/patches.
Anyone have any ideas?

If I can't get it to hotsynch from the usb cable I'm thinking of getting a infra red adaptor for my pc to hotsynch with...how slow/easy/recommended is this?

Hotsync via infrared would be extremely painful. I would really not recommended that at all. You would be looking at a horrible 14KB/s, and that's the absolute maximum. In reality you might get half that on average. Remember that IRDA works by sending pulse or burst transmissions, so that makes it even slower.

Getting to the problem at hand... You mentioned that you installed the drivers manually? I assume that you mean you went into the Hardware panel and tried to reinstall the drivers that way? Did you try removing the current listing for the device completely first, and then restarting and reinstalling? It could say Unknown Device, or the actual name of the device. If you deleted the listing and restarted, and the computer automatically reinstalled the drivers, then it might take manually deleteing the .inf file for the device from the Windows directory.

With XP it remembers everything ever connected, as in it always keeps the inf file of every device. That way it can attempt to setup the device without needing the disc. This is a real pain when you want to remove a device to reinstall it properly. It automatically detects and installs the device without you even having the disc in (keep in mind this is most USB devices, not all. XP also uses the same device drivers already on the computer.. stupid to me if the driver file is corrupted and thats what you want to reinstall. Most all USB devices are simply an inf file though.)

1.) So remove the device from the hardware panel... 2.) Find out the name of the .inf file on the Sony disc... 3.) Search for that on your hard drive and delete it... 4.) Do not attempt to reinstall at this point. RESTART your computer first... 5.) Windows should not automatically install the drivers, so install them from the CD... 6.) Pray it works. ;)

If this does not work, then I would think that there is something wrong with the palm, or seriously wrong with your OS/Drivers. This is the point at which I would attempt to use the device on another machine or OS.

Good luck.

I had the same problem. Just add hotsync.exe from the exclusion list of the firewall of XP SP2 and it will be ok...

LMAO!!! I thought that the new XP firewall had problems, but d@mn that's funny.

So glad I use my mac for all of my sync needs.

That is why you should completely disable the windows firewall and install your own, if you actually need one.

You may have to reload the software onto your computer hardware, hot reset your Clie, and then try Hotsyncing. If that doesn't work it may be a hardware problem in the unit or a loose connection. There are roughly 12 cable connections to the circuit board, any one of which could disrupt it. Slight impacts have been know to damage circuits and/or loosen connections.
