Haven't seen anyone else's report so I thought I'd give you my early experiences with mine. I bought it through TreoCentral and had my Verizon number ported.

I've been using PDAs since the HP LX series in the early 90's. Have have a Vx, N760C, NX70 and currently an NX80. This is my first smartphone and thus Treo. Received the T650 in the mail Thursday. At this point my concerns have been installing all the apps I'll want to use on it, currently which are the same ones I currently use on the NX80.

Came battery removed. Opened the box, put the battery in, it fired right up, did a soft reset, and it was ready to go. Made a call to the home number and it worked. Friend called my cell phone and received fine. Called the VM number to set up the box ......... that was ready to go. Logged onto Cingular/MediaNet, registered, set up my alerts ....... have started to receive those at the scheduled times.

Everything works, keyboard is awesome,. Form factor is perfect for the combo Palm/phone. The screen is MUCH brighter than the NX80 ...... not much crisper, I think it looks better because of the brightness.. The keyboard backlighting is a great feature. The jog dial of the NX is very useful, the 5-way being ackward only because I've used the NX's for so long. The sound from the ear piece is OK ....... not great, but no worse than the new Motorola V series the rest of the family has. I was moving from an old Motorola TimePort. Reception is a bit better ...... but that will have a lot to do with the change in carriers as well.

Software Installed

I have just about all the apps I think I need installed now. They are:
Office Professional (apps on unit, fonts, accessories on SD card), Datebook5, TealPhone, iSolo, PocketTunes, ZLauncher, Grafitti Anywhere, BugMe+, eReader, AudiblePlayer, ClipPro, the two games that came on the CD. I will Probably copy some of my other apps to the SD card (Worldmate, PocketChess, AdobeReader) to also test. Everything works......... at least they open and I have been able to make preference changes. No crashes, but I really haven't 'exercised' them yet. I have used TealPhone and DateBook5 quite a lot for work in the last two days ............ there are issues, see below.

Peaceful Co-existence
I will be using both PDAs and on two separate Windows PCs, one with Groupwise, therefore, needing Intellisync. Because of this, I experimented at home by moving the Sony directory, installing the T650 in a fresh directory, then moving the Sony directory back. As I said, I had no issues with installing apps on the Treo on the home PC. After it was all done, I exited the Treo HS Mgr, fired up the Sony HS Mgr, unplugged the Treo and plugged in the NX80. The Sony HS Mgr recognized the ID but all of my other conduits were gone. As I suspected the T650 overwrote something in the registry that will not allow both desktops to co-exist.

So, for now, till someone tells me how to make both palms co-exist (work through the same Desktop and HS Mgr), I'm trying to find work-arounds. I'm going to have the NX be the connected unit at work so I can still get my work Groupwise calendar and email. At home, the Treo will be the primary PDA. The most important is data sharing. So far beaming has worked ..... sorta worked ..........

Address Book --- Tried beaming the AddressDB from the NX to the Treo. Worked the first time. The second time it doubled the entries. Found out why. The older palms use that name (AddressDB). The T650 uses 'ContactsDB' . Tealphone (I guess) looks at both and combines. Once I had beamed the AddressDB file I HS'ed and manually made changed to the Address book and sync'ed again forcing the DT to overwrite the handheld.
Calendar --- Similar situation. The old file name is DateBookDB. The new one is 'CalendarDB'. Again, two beams of DatebookDB doubled my appointments!!! I ended up going into DateBook5 and setting up to beam ALL events in the calendar from all categoies. That worked.

With more knowledge of the file structures and how things are written to the T650, there may be much easier ways to go about keeping the two 'sync'ed'.

Oh yes, the important question: What about the RAM? With all that is installed: 4.7megs remaining. For the calendar DB file: 312 records and 191K. Address DB 697 records and 347K ........ and these are average records (name address, 2 phone numbers, email, company name), just a few with notes.

Overall Impression

In a word ......... WOW! What a powerful unit. And I haven't set-up everything for the web yet. Easy to learn, wondreful screen, great form factor. Any downside? Yes, I spoiled with the screen size of the NX80. I routinely do spreadsheets, documents, and databases. The larger screen is easier on the eyes because of the size.

Would appreciate other's reports. What you found you can't and can do and the work-arounds.

I've never tried to use two Palms on the same PC. It has been multiple Palms on different PCs.

In reading the manual (imagine that ... reading the manual!) I found out what needs to be done to use two Palms on the same machine. Apparently, it is possible. Yes, I knew that different directories are set up for different 'users' on the same PC. That really means different Palms, each required to have a different HotSync ID. I FINALLY figured that out.

That said, does that work well? With third-party app conduits? With older PalmOS but non-PalmOne Palms (Clies) and the new Treo? Is there a thread or source of info on this topic?

Thanks for any insight. I'd like to try to get both using the same setup on my home PC.

I appreciate your posts. I've been using a Treo 650 (Cingular) for the past 2 weeks. I think I'll keep it!

I appreciate your posts. I've been using a Treo 650 (Cingular) for the past 2 weeks. I think I'll keep it!Thanks. As I stated in my posts, I (and sounds like you) would like others' experiences as well so we can speed (flatten) the learning curve. By the lack of posts in this thread, I'm beginning to wonder how many Treo owners frequent this site. Although, this IS suppose to be a Clie site.

So far so good.

Have bumped up to the RAM limitation. Have installed on the 650: ZLauncher, TealPhone, Datebk5, PocketTunes, OfficePro Word and Excel, VoiceDailer, iSolo, AudiblePlayer, eReader, QuickNews, BugMe+, PSMemo, and a couple of drivers). Remaing RAM = 3.8megs. Can't add more so, apps that require a fair amount of memory will work when started from the card (Agendus, OfficePro Access & Slides, BJ2, Zap, GTS).

Only curious thing is regarding, of all things, beaming. I haven't been able to figure out why, but at times it will not receive beamed files/info. Yes, beaming is turned on and during the same time-frame it will send via IR. Once reset (soft) it returns to accepting beamed info. I am forced to do a fair amount of beaming because I have the NX80 I am maintaining and the two must share data between my work and home computers. My company won't support the newer Palms until second quarter (they have given up on the PPC and PPC smartphones). So, I continue to sync to Groupwise with the NX80, then beam the calendar to the 650 through Datebk5 ......... continues to impress after using it for ~4 years.

I have a Treo 600, Tungsten T5, and Clie UX50 syncing on two different computers, all living in harmony.

On my home computer, I installed the PalmOne desktop that came with the T5. I set it up to work with Outlook 2003 using Intellsync. I got it working, hotsynced, etc. I then hooked up the Treo 600, and the system found the USB drivers for it, and it installed with no problems. The only thing I miss is the software for working with photos on the phone, not a problem for me. I then connected the UX50, it was found and the USB drivers loaded. It syncs just fine. The only thing that I see different it that the UX50's internal memory as unknown, but it still installs to it.

On my office computer, I installed the Palm desktop that came with the Treo 600 for Outlook 2003. Same scenario as with the home computer, I hooked up the T5 and the UX50, and both hotsync with no problems. The desktop sees both the Internal Drive on the T5 and the internal memory on the UX50 as unknown, but will install programs and data to them.

The Drive Mode on the T5 works on both computers, so I can use it as a USB drive if I want to. Works great transferring large files.

I also hotsync the T5 and the UX50 via Bluetooth on both computers. Works fine.

I took the plunge and tried having both the NX80 and T650 co-exist on my home PC.

Uninstalled the T650 desktop, did fresh install for the Clie desktop and utilities I use. Checked to see that it still HotSync'ed. Using Back-up Buddy on the T650 I copied every thing to the SD card, then did a hard reset. Installed the PalmOne desktop over the Clie desktop. Hotsync'ed the T650 ........... when it asked for new or existing account I chose a new HotSync ID similar (not the same) to the NX80. It sync'ed with no problem. Success ........... both Sync and respective memory card are recognized by the PC.

Used TealMover to copy apps and selected data files back to the T650's RAM. Of course, now all were in 'demo' or 'trial' mode. I contacted all of the developers about a second unlock code, supplying all of my registration information and except for one (Snappermail ........ will not even discount a second one) all that have responded have sent a second code. Two in particular were helpful ........ Mobile Systems (Office Professional, Oxford Dictionary) and Pimlico Software (Datebk5). You want to continue supporting developers like these.

All in all, a good experience with this, both from a hardware and software standpoint. Now, on to the work PC where I have to deal with an ancient version of Intellisync and sync'ing to Groupwise. I've been successfully sync'ing with the NX80 for years to get calendar. Don't know if Intellisync will work with the new P1 desktop or allow sync'ing with the T650.

Regarding charging through a USB cable adaptor: I purchased the USB-Power /HotSync cable for travel. There have been doubts about using it just to re-charge the battery ......... some thinking it would take too long. Today I was down to 50-60% charge. Plugged in using the travel cable and it took 90-100 minutes to fully charge. I doubt that's too much different than the AC charger.

Still interested in hearing others' experiences with this whole process.

Hi there. I too moved onto the Treo 650 (Sprint). I am thinking of keeping this sweet lil device as well. I never knew how good it feels to go "stylus free". This thing is definatly a one handed device. Out of all the programs I use, only thing I need the stylus for is "Today +". The battery life is pretty amazing as well. I talked on the phone for about 30 mins, surfed the net for about 45 minutes today, entered some appointments, write and recieved emails, chatted with SMS messaging and still have 85% battery life. I don't think I'll ever switch out the battery any time soon, but I am happy to have that option if I need to. Love how bright the screen is, at 1/3 brightness for Treo it takes 2/3 for the TH to match it. I think the form factor is good as is. Its nice, small and compact. The voice reception is good and clear, the sound from the phone is good and I use the Jambra gel plug headset and I have to set the call volume to 2 because its soo freakin loud in my ear. :) I am one happy Treo user.

It does more than either (as you said) and the battery still out performs. And your comment about form factor is spot-on. Can't think of a size/shape that would be better.

Regarding the stylus ......... I know you like stylus free operation, but I have used Grafitti Anywhere with the 650 and it does simplify input for certain apps.

I must stay current ....... keep my apps (for the most part) at the most recent version even if it costs. So when Pa1mOne oferred the Cingular update I jumped at it.

All went well and in less time then the 30 minutes P1 said it would take. No changes to cluster sizes ......... must be as they said ........ fixing bugs.

One issue I discovered as a result of the uppgrade: now, VersaMail causes a soft reset EVERYTIME it is launched. As I said, I can't tell if it the upgrade or other apps. I did use VersaMail for the first couple of weeks, but not since the hard reset to change the HotSync ID to enable use of both Palms on the same desktop. SOoooo ................. I did a hard reset and before re-sync'ing I tried VersaMail ............ worked like a charm. Re-synced. Back to resetting at each launch. Time to figure out what app is in conflict.

Some of the apps I'm running in the background: ClipPro, Grafitti Anywhere, Wireless Keyboard driver. Disabled or removed them ........still reset. Others I have: ZLauncher, Oxford Dictionary, Office Professional, Tealphone, Datebk5, eReader Pro. But, wouldn't one of those have to have a portion always running in the background to cause the reset?

So the conclusion: the upgrade went smoothly, but a conflict does exist between versaMail and some other 'factor' on the unit.

Anyone else experiencing resets when launching VersaMail? Would like to compare notes.

Were you having problems with your voicemail? That is what this patch is for. I spoke to the cingular rep when I bought my phone and he said that the older models had a glitch where the # for voicemail was wrong. He did tell me that the patch would be released soon but I was lucky enough to get one without that problem. I'm amazed that you would try the patch if your voicemail was working correctly.

akI've always lived dangerously with my hardware and software. Didn't really have issues with the voicemail but did have an old ROM number. Figured that sooner or later the glitch would kick in ........... most likely happens only with a particular key combination that I hadn't gotten around to yet.

Wasn't a conflict at all between VersaMail and other app(s). Decided to delete the associated data files for VersaMail. Sure enough, they must have been corrupted. Once restarting VersaMail, of course it re-generated the basic files and it runs fine.

Everytime I re-sync'ed, I was moving the corrupted files back to the 650 which caused the reset. The world, again, is a beautiful place.

Great review and I agree with everything. My 650 is brand new, the 2nd one I have had in a 2-day time period. 'This' one won't connect with MediaNet and I'm having difficulty getting customer support/service. Nobody has been able help. I believe the give up and tell me to return the phone.

I've posted elsewhere regarding MediaNet. Til then, I still love it and it's been pretty much, plug and play. Still, I am SO anxious to begin loving it MORE :)

Does this thing have true voice recognition like a V710 as an example?

*Just noticed Cingular in your title, so I deleted this question.* :)

I would like more RAM and hoping the fix that was just released for the Sprint version will be released shortly for/by Cingular. There are reports of a hefty increase in useable RAM after applied.

Are you able to get email or text messages? What are you not able to do besides connect to that site?
