For the past few months we have been working on an open source alternative to BitTorrent called Dijjer - http://dijjer.org/
Unlike BitTorrent, it works seamlessly through most firewalls, and because it streams data straight to your HTTP client it is extremely flexible, for example it can play back videos embedded in a web page as they are being downloaded.
It is also far easier to publish videos through Dijjer, you just upload them to a normal web server, but instead of linking directly to them, you prefix the URL with "http://dijjer.org/get/".
Dijjer is still under development, and isn't yet 100% solid, but it is usable and if more people start using it to distribute stuff, it will be a big help to us as we find and kill the remaining bugs.
