View Full Version : I've Been Patient.....
I have been a supporter of the NZ ever since it rumors last year. As a matter of fact, I may have been one of the first in here to own one. So no one can say I'm a NZ hater. I am really disappointed in the battery life. I mean, I can't even record 3 four minute movies without my battery dropping from 90% to 30%. (Un-like my NX, I could record all day.) Then my NZ tells me my battery is too low to use the movie recorder. How frustrating, I need this feature for my job! How about the difference in quality?!? The blocky look is terrible! If I have to take my 5.0 mega pixel camera on the job site just to record a quality movie to play on my NZ for my clients, why not just keep my NX70V and take back my NZ! As a matter of fact, I like the quality of the NX Movie Recorder better than the NZ. Yeah, the colors are richer with the NZ but the over all quality sucks!
There's no need for me to even mention the camera mode. Battery life is good if you fire off consistant shots but what about when you use your NZ for work and the battery reads 85%, then take four pictures. Your battery will drop like your leaking energy! Trust me I have tried every thing. Yeah, discharging the battery to 7%, then charging it works for a while but it's still so disappointing. I'm going to BB to exchange my NZ for a new one, hopefully it's just mine.

Yea, try not to discharge it too much, and make sure NOT to turn it on when its charging for the first time. I just got a replacement NX and I didn't turn it on to play with it, and so far the battery life is alot better than my previous NX, where I played with it before it was fully charged.

As I've posted on one of the threads, how come the battery behave randomly ?? And why is SONY not doing anything to it so as to keep his loyal/new customers in long run ...

The battery seems to have become a real issue with the NZ. This is a shame.
BTW, I turned my clie on when I first got it and before it was fully charged while it was still in the cradle with no ill effects. So I am not going to say any special charging procedures are necessary other than keep it topped off as much as you can.
I have tons of devices with rechargeable Lithium batteries and none has failed me yet.

The $64 million dollar question??? The only way to get Sony to listen, is through it's wallet !

When I phoned Sony about my battery problems, the technician said he had never heard of such a problem. I told him about all the threads on Cliesource and he really acted shocked about that. He and his co-workers said they have never heard of all the battery issues. Unbelievable.

Yea I turned mine on during the first charging. We even had a power out that lasted about 15 minutes right in the middle of my charging. I still get great battery life. I usually sit around 6.75 hours with brightness at 1/3 and playing MP3's for about a total of an hour in the day.
My Mp3's play fine because I have it in the hold mode but right now as I type my NZ is at 65% and that's after only 7 mins of recording in Movie mode. How un-fair. Well I'm taking it back tomorrow, I'm working late. I will let you guys know what happened.

That's a lot of movie!!! Mine max out around a minute or so. Mostly the dog acting crazy and such. if you really need a movie recorder for work that badly,I guess you would be having problems. The movie recorder has been my biggest diasappointment. I don't use it for anything important and the camera is so much nicer that I've chosen to ignore it. I hope they address it with a patch.
Good luck, Maji. Sorry for your disappointment.

I love the NZ and I think that the video camera is the only thing that I am really disapointed about. There are other things that I could complain about but I am not sure it is possible to fix. The video camera on the other hand, that has to be just lazy designers. It would not be all that hard for them to just get it right the first time instead of letting rumors out that there is a patch coming to fix it. Personaly I think that if they had improved the video camera in the first place they would be having a lot more sales. It would be the thing that put the wary custumer over the edge. But no, they just did not bother...

I'm thinking.... the movie recorder/player bad quality is mostly due to a software issue... and not a camera issue. We all know the camera takes good quality pics ...... so the video-recorder should as well. They must have 'compressed' the movies too much or something for them to be blocky and not as good quality. The software needs updating badly.

yea, that is what i was talking about, just did not use the word "software"

Lets hope that once the documentation on how to program the NZ90 camera comes out from Sony, the guys at
www.clievideo.com (makers of VIVID) will be able to make a better camera for us :)
P.S. Watch out, the site for VIVID is NOT www.vivid.com its www.clievideo.com ;)

LOL - true, the www.vivid.com website is an eyefull...::SMILE::
I think Sony may have *known* that the battery would be an issue, and hence the ability to change the battery out...makes sense to me...
I read somewhere else on here they are coming out with a higher-capacity battery as well.
My only concerns with a removable battery is - *how* do you charge the battery that isn't in the Clie??? Does it come with a charging unit or something?
Does anyone out there have one they could enlighten me / us with???
Thanks,
Ken

After reading this thread I loaded the video app and started to record and so far I'm at 7 minutes and the battery has hardly moved. I will see how much longer it can record before I get any warning message.

Are you sure you are using an NZ90 ?
I can see my battery drop down by roughly a half the moment I open the Camera application.
Also, just have the camera app running (just sitting there) you can see the battery drop down roughly one degree every minute or so....

Well........ I did the following:
I started out with 92% free on my PDA.
I started to record a movie.
I recorded 10minutes (exactly).
Checking the battery just prior to stopping the recording showed 38%.
After exiting the Movie recording app and letting the battery re-charge back up it came back up to 76%
I don't know if that is typical or not for a 10min movie or not.
I recorded the movie with HIGH SOUND Recording or whatever the parm is to try and draw as much juice as possible.

OK, I did the video test and here's what I got.
- charged 100 percent
- baklight at the lowest setting
- to this minute as I write this I got 15 percent battery and it has recorded 56:38 seconds. And it's still going.
I have 17-18 minutes left on the sony 128 stick. Now it's recorded 58 minutes and still at 15 percent battery. Now it's 13 percent battery and 59:53 record time. There it is, now I reached the limit in recording and it said "saving file" and another message said that the batterries are to low. movie recorder will abort.
So you have a defective unit if you can only record 3 minutes. Hope this has helped I got to get back to work now.

I thought that the camera app will kick you out if the battery drops below 30% or so ?
How are you still getting it to run at 15% ?

P.S. after the movie app shut down the battery went back to 32 percent which leaves 2 hours and 33 minutes of pda use. Seems cool to me. I also set the movie with HIGH SOUND which does nothing but make a loud noice when you click record, I think. Also, the NZ got WARM and cooled off in less than 3 minutes!

I hear ya George!!!!!! ... I didn't want to record longer... or I would have been in jeopardy of having to remove some of my MP3s to make room for longer recording (could have gone up to 30+ minutes I guess). I just wanted a 10min baseline test.

Note that when George exited his battery readings went back up to 32%...

Actually the battery yelled out GO FOR IT. I have 2 batteries so I did not mind the torture test. Maybe it would go bad and I can take it back since it has not been 14 days. But all went well.

I think... I'll just throw a 1000CCA Truck battery in a backpack.. and hardwire that to my PDA .... shouldn't have any more issues of battery consumption for awhile.... *Laffs 2 Himself*

This is a lot more dramatic than I thought it would be. I recorded for an hour with my NX, backlight at lowest setting. I started at 4.20 volts and ended somewhere around 4.18 volts. I know the NX has a lot worse battery monitoring than the NZ's smartLithium software setup, but regardless I still had plenty of power left. I then went on to play an hour of mp3 and quite a bit of the video I had recorded.
The circuity for the camera in the NZ must be dramatically different. Real high current stuff.

Errr, I just got my NZ two days ago, I really enjoy it, I don't know what are you guys talking about. I paid about 700 dollars including 2nd air shipping. The batter life is great, and it lasted me for hours, I took few picts at the bus stop, and it only came from 97 to 93%. and then I went along with it and played mp3s, to all of my classes, and when the day end it. I still had about 45% on the battery. What's the deal here? I bet you guys didn't charge it 4.5 hours before you use it. You're not even suppose to turn it on when it's at it's 1st charge. I had to force myself to take a 4 hours nap when I charge mine NZ. I wanted to turn it on while it's charging, but now I'm glad that I didn't...
I'm a NZ newbie here, and for the 1st time, I'm not scared anymore.... you guys freaked me out while I was waiting for my NZ to arrive... I thought I threw my 700 dollars in the water. But I'm feel great now, enjoying every feature of my beloved NZ... You dont a Great job SONY!

Not that I've had any problems with mine, but I'm sure the people who have had problems know how to properly charge their device. Most of this has been discussed in other threads, so that's why I'm so confident. Anyway, as with any device, there are always going to be problems with some. This problem with the NZ battery is just discussed here often, that's all. If you read through many previous threads, you will see that you can't just jump to the conclusion that these people didn't charge their units properly the first time. BTW, some people have said they turned their NZs on without charging it "properly" and they still have great battery life...so it seems the first charge is not the be all and end all of how the battery will work.

First, it's obvious to me that the battery has major issues with it and the users shouldn't be blamed for it.
Secondly, anyone who posts an email as unregistered, has no credence in my eyes. They either speak with forked tongue, hiding their identity, and/or both! So anything that they post I don't take seriously and they can't be believed.

Additionally, it should require email verification of the user.
that still doesn't tell you someone's identity. I just wondered since people spend so much time complaining about it.
Oh and how to you post to the message board by email?
Thanks.
Question to all in here. Do you think it is a waste of my time to exchange my NZ? It's obvious that the battery SUCKS! It's also obvious that the Movie Player playback SUCKS! Huh, I guess it's also obvious that I'm stuck with something that SUCKS but not all the time.

To become a registered user, one would need to be verified by email like it's done on YahooGroups.

If you guys follow some of these threads closely, one of the users said that SONY is doing something about it and the other said that SONY claimed that the battery is adequate. (Both also called up SONT tech support).
So which is which ?? Well, for your to decide ....
N2ifp, do you have any battery problems? How about your Movie playback, is it blocky? If you're not having these problems, say something because I will just exchange my NZ for a new one.
