I've written to Ray Larabie of Larabiefonts.com hoping to obtain permission to convert some of his fonts. He has hundreds of fun, creative, free and freely distributable fonts, but there is a license agreement which states no alterations can be made to the font. Would conversion from True Type to Bitmap Font be considered an alteration?

I'd love to put together a package of Larabie Fonts converted for FontSmoother.

If there is no license agreement at all, then you're in the clear in the U.S., because in the U.S. bitmap fonts are not copyrightable (things are different in Europe). You shouldn't even think of it as conversion. A TrueType or Type 1 font is a kind of computer program. That's why it's copyrightable. But the bitmaps are simply the output of the program. (There is good reason not to copyright the bitmaps. If they were copyrighted, then you might have legal problems with photocopying texts you yourself have written, because you'd be duplicating the fonts that were used to print out the text!)

Personally, I've got a slight gray area with the Utopia font that I include. The license doesn't explicitly say modifications are permitted. However, it says that the trademark notice must appear in all "unmodified" copies, which suggests that modified copies should be OK.

Oops. Just realized a problem with my Utopia licensing. They require that the license be "in" the font. Whatever that may mean! This means I'm going to have to put the license within each .prc, in a CPRT resource or something like that. Time to do a maintance release. (Done: Version 1.11. Also improves FontHackV compatibility slightly.)

Of course if the fonts have a license, you need to abide by its terms. Such a license when valid can restrict you beyond what copyright law permits. Also, the names of fonts may be trademarked, and modifying the fonts then might be risky. (I modified the spacing on Utopia, but I am hoping that was just to compensate for poor rendering, and doesn't count as a font modification.) And asking is always polite.

After the Alienware fiasco a few months ago, I'll be making sure all parties concerned give a thumbs up before I use their resources.

the fixedsys font would look nice in memopad, of course not antialiased.

A small courier font might be nice to generate.

What would be nice would be an aa font set that has the same dimensions as the original set. This includes similar font spacing, size, and just about everything. Programs like due yesterday require correct vertical spacing, and menus pretty much need this too. Text goes beyond the end of the screen when the horizontal spacing is not correct. If there is a set like this, I would love to be enlightened.

Do Sony and Tungsten font sets have the same horizontal spacing?

The screenshot shows URW Bookman, which is a lovely face. You are absolutely right about this being a fantastic font. I made it my eReader and Bible apps font and the text (which I thought was pretty good with Aleith AA) is stunning! Very nice on the eyes during long reading sessions. ;)

Thank you Alex!!! :)

Another great set of fonts! I'm particularly fond of the URW Bookman as well. It looks very nice in Bible apps and readers.

Pardon my ignorance, but if you are using font smoother with Fonts for OS5 do you have to have YAHM installed?

Yes. Font Smoother is a (very stable) OS 5 hack and must be loaded with YAHM to work.
