Hi all,
I just bought an NX70v/u online and it's about to arrive. This will be the first PDA I've ever owned and I'm a little confused about memory. I know that I'll want to purchase a larger memory card than the one supplied, but I'm unclear as to whether I HAVE to buy the sony memory stick cards or if I can buy a compact flash card to use in my Clie. Also, it looks like there are small differences in types of those memory cards (memory stick vs. memory stick PRO, compact flash type II, etc.) and then there's the issue of how big a card it will hold. I was hoping to buy a 512 mb card in whatever I get but can someone more familiar with all this make a suggestion as to what card I should buy that would fit in this model of clie and also a reputable brand name (sandisk, lexar?) I'm just hoping for something that works fine and I don't care if the card is a specific sony card or not, the cheaper the better as long as it is dependable and compatible. THanks for any help that anyone can provide.

Brand should not matter BUT I would advise that you stay with a MS 1st.
For ALL operations the MS is the easiest to use... MS pro NOTE: you need to install an update, IF BY SOME chance you HAVE to HARD Reset your NX70, you need to install the UPDATE 1st before you can use your MS PRO successfully.

1) Get an 128MB MS (some 256MB MS are 2x128MB, so look carefully
2) GET yourself an MS PRO if you want, THEY are much cheaper than before.

OR
READ the CF Posts in this forum, THERE are tried and true methods to TAKING advantage of the CF card, BUT I would not depend on a CF card solely (requires tinkering, installing, instructions, etc.) I installed a CF driver (bought product) and usually store NOTHING but mp3s on it OR transfer images from my Digital Camera to view them on my NX70... but video DOES not seem to handle nicely from CF cards.
**TRY TO STAY away from microdrives, reading from them is fine BUT saving to them requires TOO Much energy that the NX cannot provide (the MD will be corrupted)

Use CF as backup/2nd storage method.

TO recap:

1) Get a 128MB MS (they are cheap enough) for all/basic/back-up needs.
2) UPGRADE to a MS PRO if you want for GREATER storage capability
3) Venture to a CF card WHEN you have the time and feel comfortable tinkering with your NX (and after you have backed it up)

WOW, it's yer 1st PDA? YOU WILL LOVE IT.
You may want:
a battery extender, a WL100 WIFI card, the Game controller, and if you are LUCKY enough the BT MS.

I recommend you get a LAUNCHER (i use ZLauncher to manage your MS and Apps) and there is SO MANY amazing freeware/shareware apps to CUSTOMIZING your NX70.

ENJOY AND GOODLUCK, and ask away...

So will I be ok with only 128 mb of memory? I'm a medical student and am planning to have a lot of drug programs, clinical consults, etc. loaded simultanously on the clie (as well as some mp3s if possible). Is a 128 card the largest capacity that the clie can accomodate or would it be compatible with a 512 mb card? Thanks

128 - largest normal MS made
with MS PRO update - can go up to 1, maybe 2 (?) GB.
128MB is a lot of memory, and sould be fine for the reasons you indicate. Could you please tell me which apps you are using, as I am about to study medicine.

I think the issue of size is related to hard disk sizes, always get the biggest one you can afford, you'll never regret buying one that you don't fill, but you'll kick yourself for getting one that's too small - and the inconvience of switching extra sticks is not worth the hassle - the NX70 has a camera, plays movies and mp3s, if you plan on using these features, 128 mb is tiny.

I agree that you can never have too much memory. I would suggest at least 512Mb, they're not that expensive. If you want, you can buy a smaller MS for backups, and keep the MSPro patch on it so that you can always have access to the Pro away from your PC even in the event of a hard reset.

What JMG_NX21 is trying to say... Go ahead and get a 256 mb , 512 mb, or 1 Gb memory stick. But you might want to consider getting a smaller normal memory stick like 16 mb (if they still sell those) all the way to 128 mb to back up your MS Pro Drivers.

The MS Pro Drivers (updates) allows you to use higher capacity memory sticks. The reason why it is important to have a backup memory stick is so that,

for example,

Lets say you working in your medical field and suddenly you dropped or something caused your PDA to crash and do hard reset (back to factory defaults). In that condition your PDA will not be able to use the MS Pro sticks. Thats where your normal memory stick comes in to back up your PDA so that you can use MS Pro again.

But if you don't want to purchase another MS then you can probably just back up through the cradle. Which means you have to wait to go home or go to the office to use backup rather than backing up at the spot.

Medical apps - yeah, they're big. Well, not hugely big. My wife is a Dr. and uses her Tungsten E all the time. She's got about 7-8 Skyscape programs on hers. She has a 256MB SD card and they only take up 50MB+ or so. She's still got room for MP3s to listen to on call nights.

But like the others said, if you get a MS Pro, you'd better have a small MS with the Pro update on it or you're out of luck until you get back to your hotsync PC. Oh, and save some money and buy a SanDisk, Lexar, or other brand of MS. They work just as well(if not better) than Sony's and will save you quite a few $$-leaving you more money to buy some more med apps.... :D
