View Full Version : "orange light on, battery icon not" --> is my NX-80V charging !?

I have an NX-80V connected to a Fortuna GPS via an Y cable. The Y cable provides power to the GPS and the NX from the cigar lighter of the car and takes the GPS signal from the Fortuna GPS (PS2 connector) to the NX-80V (serial connector).

Everything works perfectly, the GPS is rather fast and the software I am using (Mapopolis) is ok.

The only odd thing is the battery of my NX-80V. The Y cable is supposed to provide power to both units (GPS and NX-80V), and what I can see on the NX is the following:

1. The "power" led in the upper left corner is orange (meaning it is charging)
2. The icon on the bottom just show the battery without the yellow lighting which appears when I have the NX-80V on the cradle

Perhaps my question is stupid, but is the NX-80V battery being charged or not? If I click on the battery icon I get the message: "Power: Internal/Status: Discharging" (I would say it is *not* getting power, right?) but for some odd reasons the charge level ("Remain: 100%") is fixed (...).

Any idea?

I recall that Sony's external battery adapter (PEGA-BC10) for the NX series has a switch to select between running the CLIE off of the pack or charging the CLIE.

What may be happening is that your Y-cable is merely running your NX but not charging it. This may well be intentional because charging will require a larger current draw that the adapter is able to deliver, especially since you're also running the GPS unit.

The power indicator light changing from green to amber may be the result of a simplistic indicator that just changes in the presence of the required voltage at the connector.

Just a guess...

Thanks!

I have found some more information at mapopolis site. To make a long story short, the Y-cable is charging the GPS and the NX-80V even if the icon does not show it... Has to do with the fact the Y-cable is providing power to the GPS as well.

And BTW, to leave the Y-cable attached to the NX-80V and switch off teh car, will drain the NX battery :-)
