View Full Version : Hopefully my very last remote...

I have debated on the idea of getting a more advanced remote, definately programmable.... Everytime I upgrade something in my setup, I end up replacing my remote. Although my last one was programmable... it was difficult to program and manually learning every key of an unknown device was long and only 95% effective, some keys just would not "learn".
I gawk at all the expenses of the more advanced remotes... but recently started "cautiously" buying from ebay. I occassionally browse electronics to see how prices compare. I saw the logitech harmony remote ending in a couple of minutes... although I let it end, I browsed to see what other prices were available, models, browsed logitech's site, read reviews... etc.
A couple of hours later, I bought the cheapest "buy now" unit that followed my set of rules I made up for ebay buying (could never be 100% effective, but I hope it increases probability of success).
Well, it came in only 2 days later, and I had it set up in minutes. It is very handy to just press one macro button and have it turn on your devices. I had one previous remote with macros, but you have to be cautious of accidentally pressing a macro while one is in operation, because your devices get turned on and off expecing them all to be off.
But the logitech remembers what it turned on. So when you switch from PVR to DVD, it leaves the TV on, and turns on the DVD, and turns off the PVR. Very handy.
The hardest part is you do not setup the device with a single 4 digit number. You set it up with the name of your device. So you have to go look and get your model numbers, enter them on the website, which looks up the codes, and downloads it. The advantage is that it was 100% effective right away.
Is it worth the expense? I won't know until the next change in my setup, since my last remote was effective until I replaced a tv, I won't know if this remote can learn "future" devices before they are invented, until I actually buy them....
Since I have bought 4 remotes in the last 4 years, I have equalled the price in one-for-all walmart remotes if you total them all up. So I can "kind of" justify the cost. I got it cheaper than list because I got it off ebay. But I won't know the REAL truth of worth until next year when I buy a receiver, or other device to replace the existing equipement, or add to the existing equipment.
Time will tell.

actually I need more light in the apartment, or not take pictures after midnight. It is black and silver (my favorite colors) and comes with red and blue face plates to replace the silver. It's shiny enough for my tastes... anyhow... if it was too shiny it would make me look rich. :p

My wife and I were given a Sony RM-AV3000 (http://www.remotecentral.com/av3000/) a couple of years ago by my Bro In Law.
It is more than our modest Home Theater system requires, but it's nice to have an "uber" remote.
There is a newer version out too, but I'm not really a "uber remote" kinda guy, it's the "gift I wouldn't get for myself" kinda thing.
I'm not sure if everyone would be happy with it, but I certainly am.

I have debated the uber remote before, and always said, "no, too expensive". And yet, buying even mid-priced multi-remotes at $50 +- they generally can't do everything I want them to do, and make it extremely difficult to do what I they can do.... It becomes frustrating and annoying to replace a stupid remote when I upgrade equipment. I am hoping that by making the jump to the uber remote, that I can end the annual multi-remote buy just because I changed a component the remote was not prepared for.
So hopefully, since all my remotes are treated well, that this will end the annual remote annoyance and save money in the long run.

I had no idea photoshop could do that. Thats crazy. I use a Sony rm-av3000, and its fairly easy to program.

For the last 3 years I've been using a Radio Shack 1994 remote, with a JP1 cable so I can download excel sheets of new/replaced equipment. Coolest remote ever made. ;)
JP1 cables work with a variety of One-For-All and Radio Shack remotes, and will give you MANY functions only expected in really high end remotes....
Check it out here...

like a charm, it's great to press a theme button and everything turns on and configures for that. If I need to switch over in mid-watching to something else, it knows the state of all the devices and switches them off/on as appropriate. :) it is great!

or is it from my tons of money I waste on trying things first? :p
I finally started using the extended menu items, everything that doesn't fit in the default use buttons shows up on the LCD. EVERYTHING picture in picture and many other rare use items. It is one thing, it is complete, they missed nothing.
