Hallo

Finally, I've just purchased my first PDA the very cool UX50 - been checking out this thread and there's lots of suggestions but what would be your top five things to do to get pda working sweetly - applications, upgrades, accessories etc.

You couldn't have a better start in the PDA world with ux50. COngratulations :)

I would suggest:

- Getting all Sony updates, specially Image Converter 1.5
- Pocket tunes 3 (to replace built-in audio player)
- ebook readers (pluker, mobibook reader, replyGo)
- WorldMate Pro
- And, of course, Bejeweled 2 for gaming!

Here's my top 5 things:
- Got to agree with shriek, get all the updates first!
- Buy a Memory Stick Pro with the size of at least 256 MB
- Get Sony EX71SL earphones, a must if you are a music listener!
- Install the English version of Media Launcher by JAmerican (search the forum if you don't understand)
- DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT buy G2 Screen Protectors!!

Hope that can help you :)

AlbumSwap (http://aibohack.com/clie/albumswap.htm) to help sort out your MP3s is quite useful.

Also for video, you may want to check out the stuff about the VZ90's MP4 codecs, and the 3GP Converter, especially if you use Linux..

If you want to replace the standard launcher, I like AppShelf. The main reason being because it integrates so nicely with the keyboard. You can launch an application by starting to type its name, and then holding down the last unique letter. (Eg, you can start AudioPlayer by pressing A and then holding down U)

I'm with BraVo about the MS, but go for the biggest you can get.
I finally got a 1meg stick. Swapping sticks in and out seemed viable at first, but got tiresome after a while.
With the full meg I can keep a nice stash of MP3s for tunes, swap them in and out when I want something new, and still have room for lots of photos, movies, ebooks and all those programs you are GONNA load in.
Go big, it will pay off in enjoyment.
And, don't forget that the biggest thing about a PDA is to carry it and get to use it for EVERYTHING. The more you "put into" it the more you will get out of the experience.
3,4&5 I'll have to think about.....
Have fun!

wow Cheechwiz, a 1 Meg stick.. LOL......

Wilbur,

I use Agendus Pro to sync up with outlook contacts and calender. I also am a huge fan of Zlauncher. If you want to add apps easily then go get it.

Find Netfront 3.1 if you are going to use the Internet.

That's it for today.

If you don't want to pay for the advanced features of BTToggle, I'd suggest getting BlueFang.

It's free, though, I don't think it has all the advanced features that BTToggle has. I use BlueFang. It's a simple way to turn your Bluetooth on and off when needed.

Also, if you plan on listening to MP3s a lot with the built-in AudioPlayer, search the TH55 forum for CliePet's under Clocking program. I've heard that it can do wonders for your battery life when listening to MP3s.

My list (in order of priority)
1) MS (you could get by with 256MB, but if you audio book you'll want more
2) EB40 - completely changed my experience with the device. No longer had to constantly be on the look for the closest outlet
3) Docs to Go or Quick Office - I've used both, both can meet most needs
4) Good headphones - I thought I needed aeroplayer or pocket tunes because audio player had no equalizer. The problem was really the headphones I was using
5) Hi-Launcher - I really like this simple, configurable launcher. Didn't realize it was UX compatible until recently, had used it on my T3. It works like the apple icon or start button. I hav it mapped to my back key. That + scroll whell makes it work great!
6) Snapper mail or versa-mail for IMAP e-mail clients
7) Seiko Inklink - Discontinued, but I use mine to take notes

But, NetFront 3.1 is indeed worth mentioning again.

First: top 5 things

1) Huge MSPro GE 512MB. Actually get 1GB. about $100 USD now and so worth it its not even funny
2) VZ90 codecs, 3gp_converter, full movie player (all free but worth it 4 serious video)
3) NF 3.1 (essential if you dont want surfing to make you angry)
4) Martin Fields Screen protector. These are absolutely worth every penny. Buy at least two since who knows how long UX50s are going to be around
5) EB-40 if you can and a case

Second:

About cases.. I had the ux50 case from extreme limit (japan) Nice but now broken and doesnt accomodate EB40. Which bellagio case do you recommend. Pouch or Bookstyle? I'm in the market as i watch my extreme limit case desintegrate a little more each day.. velcro lost its stick and thin leather strap is streched beyond utility and clie doesnt fit in it right anymore... UGH.

Thank you for all your kind sympathy..... gag, retch!
Yes, I have a 1GIG[!!!!] stick. And recommend going that big for anybody.
Sorry gang, but ol' Cheech DOES remember when a whole meg seemed like a big deal.
I started out with a Compaq "suitcase" running GWDOS. Always liked that portability factor.

Sony Updates (http://esupport.sony.com/perl/select-clie.pl)

The two most important, in my case, were the MS update and the PDT registry update.

Dan

I agree! If you plan on using your pda for mp3, video, & photos I would say go for the 1gig stick. If you can afford it go for a 2Gb MS. Then you wont have to worry about buying another. I had a 32mb MS that came with my Dig Cam. So I bought a 256 to take photos, then a couple of months later I bought another 256, then bought the UX & 1gb as a package deal. Months later, I bought the 2gb. It sucks to me 2 have thos 2 256mb MS's. I would rather have saved my money & have the 1 & 2gig sticks only.

BTW, I agree with most of the apps people already listed on here. IMO, if you dont waste batt life, you wont use any of the "other" mp3 apps besides the Media Launcher or built in Sony one. Also, Im not sure what everyone else use but, I use AcidImage Pro for my Photoalbum viewer. Their website (http://www.acid-image.com/)
It automaticlly opens up photos in fullscreen & can zoom photos or skip to the next photo with the jog wheel. You can also flip pics counter or clockwise. Which is pretty cool to me.

The first softs to buy :
- something for backup + MS
- KEYQUICK ! No one mentionned it ?
This soft improves the use of your keyboard. Very, very useful ! I almost don't use my stylus.
- datebk5 is, in my opinion, better than Agendus mostly because you don't need a stylus to enter an appointment.

No need to buy :
- screen protector, if you use keyquick.
- power run, alias ext makes the same thing.

Battery :
EB40 is expensive and difficult to find. You can replace it by : case/charger + ziplink + battery case for 4 AA batteries and USB female output.

(Sorry for my bad english )

Thanks all for the feedback - not done anything practical with the UX50 but it's a hell of a toy to play with so far.

Thanks

I just picked up a UX-50 the other day, and yesterday I bought a 512 Pro Duo (so I can use it with the PSP as well). I'm pretty impressed so far but I have a couple problems:

- WiFi hotsync does not work, but WiFi browsing works like a charm
- The USB cover is horrible!
- I need to know what settings to re-encode my movies at so they play smoothly

It's an awesome little handheld and it's amazing how great that little WiFi scanner is :D
I'll also be picking up some essential software, thanks for the heads up guys.

My top 5 is thus, in no order:
Appshelf
Media launcher (which of course means IC2)
TiBR Pro - simple ebook reader that also read ztxt files (that means I use makeztxt for simple conversion - it's a sloppy, sloppy way to read books, but I don't require a lot, and am happy with it's simplicity)
GSImageview (again, simple and quick)
McFiles/Filez (These go hand in hand, so I listed as one)

Netfront 3.1 English Translated is definitely right up there as well (from the VZ90)
512 mb MS if you use it for mp3 playback. (256 just ain't enough)
