View Full Version : how can I upgrade my PEG-N710C to run OS 4.x?

The other day, I bought my first Clié - a gently-used PEG-N710C running OS 3.5.2 ... I'd like to upgrade it to run OS 4.x (whatever version of OS 4.x it can possibly run; naturally, I prefer higher-number versions. I would want to run OS 5, actually, but I don't know if the PEG-N710C permits this.)
So: how do I (using a Mac) get the necessary system upgrade? As I guess you know, Sony has an OS 4.x upgrade on its download-site but for Windopes-users only - I tried to find out from them if they had a Mac-compatible upgrade-download, but the tech-guy response fell into a category that I can most charitably describe as "screw you." So what do I do now?

For staters, how about trying not to offend us "Windopes" users? :)

I think what you are seeing is the palm desktop which is very different to the palm os. Sony about a year ago ended a program to upgrade the 710 to OS 4 effectively making it a 760. Unfortunately I don't think they offer it in any way shape or form. The big difference between OS 3.5 and 4.0 (I think) is running programs off the memory stick, which can be done with a decent launcher app. OS 5 is impossible to run, just a different system requirement, its like a running OSX on my silly Windopes machine (no offense taken:) ).
what they have on the Sony support site is Palmdesktop, which is a very different animal. It is a PC software app that syncs up with your clie, if you aren't running something like Outlook. Since you are running a Mac you would be looking for something like missing sync, I think. This will allow your Clie to sync up to your outlook on your mac. There might be other programs that would do the hotsyncing for you but you'd have to do some research in our Mac forum. Good luck.
i find it funny that you are insecure enough to feel the need to attack other platform-users as windopes when your choice of platform is so marginalized and cost you a dearth of choices in software, hardware and support. i had the 4.1 upgrade for pc users handy to send you if you could lower yourself from to stoop to find access to a lowly windows machine.
reap what you sow!
then again, it may be just the ingrained zealotry that the church of mac encourages and completely subliminal and unwitting on your part.

You should be able to find answers in the MacWindow's forums.
