i lost all my data after battery drain.

i hotsync'd to restore everything but when im prompted to soft reset at the end of the process it gets stuck on the "Palm Powered" screen. Im then forced to perform a hard reset.

the possible good news is that the battery doesnt drain when its clean of all software so its prob a software glitch....

I havent had to hard reset for the 10 months ive owned the th55 so maybe at some point with loading updates and trialing software etc ive been lucky not to get a glitch sooner. Im looking forward to a 'clean' install even though its alot of hassle!

Just wondering how people go about re-installing?

1, Ive got a BackupMan backup (all upto date) on my memory stick so i can install individual files later and ive backed up the Sony Handheld folder on the C: Drive. Is this enough?

2, So just uninstall EVERYTHING related to the clie everywhere on my PC (palm desktop, palm, apps (smartlisttogo, docstogo, agendus etc etc) and then reinstal everything one at a time or is there some other way that some veteran reinstaller might know?

please help. im going to start my way some point in the next few hours.

i cant be without my pda! im lost...i use it for everything..expenditure log, journal, todo, appts, lists, word, excel....EVERYTHING!

3, im prob going to buy a spare th55 or maybe a cheap lower end sony or palm model as a backup pda. any idea how to manage two pdas on the same hotsync name? it is poss?

4, what if i want to change my hotsync name, do i have to contact all my software suppliers and get new reg codes? will they supply new codes?

ANY HELP APPRECIATED. thanks.

Rename your backup file (I use the format BACKUP011905 - so you know the date). Before you do a hotsync after a hard reset. At that point, the software will do nothing other than restore your basic datebook, address, memo databases.

Then reinstall the programs, one at a time is best. And it may be a good time for you to invest in UnInstall . . .

You don't really need to uninstall your desktop software.

This might be a good time to also back up your memory stick . . .

You can't do two PDAs with the same hotsync name. It causes major problems when one is changed and the other one isn't (i.e., if you add an address/phone number, appt or whatever . . . )

And if you change your hotsync name, whether you'll need new reg codes or not depends on the software - - it may or may not use your HotSync name. Some will supply new codes, some will not. I believe most will, though . . . why change your hotsync name? Needless hassle, to me.

ALSO, what about this idea. its not perfect but its an option i think.

so i buy a 2nd hand palm tungsten or sony clie and give it the same hotsync name as my th55. i then install all the same software on my clie onto the backup pda via my brothers computer so all the reg codes should work. then weekly or bi weekly i just infra or bluetooth the relevant db files from clie to backup pda...or copy db files onto memory stick then insert ms into backup and copy them over to relevant places - just essential stuff, not every file.

what do u think?

I agree with YellowRose:
Start with a clean (empty) backup folder.
Install Uninstall Manager first.
Then install your apps one-by-one.
It's the best way to keep your PDA clean and avoid problems.

Sorry they wanted to keep it a secret Yaja. Go to Program Files, then Sony Handheld, then the file with a variation on your hotsync name (ie, the file is titled greenb for me because my hotsync name is brad green), then go to the file titled backup. This is it.

thankyou, a couple of seconds late but thanks nonetheless :)

so im guessing you leave all the other crap in the sony handheld folder as is...

im going to start re install now....in for a long night.

any tips on what OLD sony clie to buy from ebay as a backup device? just want to keep acouple of programs backup independent of anywhere eg TJ27 or TG30 or NX73V etc etc

dont really care for what it can do / functionality as long as it has memory stick ability and palm 5.0 os?

A TG-50 would work.
