View Full Version : how can I upgrade my PEG-N710C to run OS 4.x?

The other day, I bought my first Clié - a gently-used PEG-N710C running OS 3.5.2 ... I'd like to upgrade it to run OS 4.x (whatever version of OS 4.x it can possibly run; naturally, I prefer higher-number versions. I would want to run OS 5, actually, but I don't know if the PEG-N710C permits this.)
So: how do I (using a Mac) get the necessary system upgrade? As I guess you know, Sony has an OS 4.x upgrade on its download-site but for Windopes-users only - I tried to find out from them if they had a Mac-compatible upgrade-download, but the tech-guy response fell into a category that I can most charitably describe as "screw you." So what do I do now?

Find a windope user that will let you use his computer to flash your Clie with the new OS....

Nope. OS5 runs only on the new ARM proccessors.

The highest OS you can upgrade to will be 4.1. I thought the N710 (or was it the N610 or both) needed some hardware upgrade before this could be done. I remeber they had a free offer to upgrade, but the unit had to be sent to them in order to get the upgrade. Can't remember. :(

Just wish Sony would stop coming out with the @#$% clam shell OS5.

Call Sony support and see if they still do the 710 upgrade, It wasn't free and it definitely won't be free to do it now if they can do it at all....

sony wont do the upgrade anymore. and you dont need a hardware upgrade, but if you search for a little while (which i know you can search the internet), you could have it done in an hour. i bought a used one, and it came in the mail today, and i had it upgraded in about 30 minutes. and the only other hand held i had before this one was a s300. i would love to tell you how to do it. but the software is not put out by sony for us to get.

The 710 & 760 are nearly identicle in hardware. Only real difference is the OS. You can flash the OS yourself. I have done it a few times for friends and it was pretty simple. If something goes wrong, however, you can render your Clie useless - so understand you do this entirely at your own risk. For instructions and information about doing the upgrade yourself, look here. I consider myself a really savvy guy when it comes to computers and installing software and drivers.

However, I got my first handheld yesterday. It's a used N710C. My computer is a Toshiba Satellite running XP Home Edition. I followed the instructions on the Sony site to update the Palm system to 4.1 but it didn't work. I'm running the Palm Desktop version 4.01 on the PC and I can HotSync and add applications to the Clie, but it's still running Palm OS 3.5.2.

There currently is no Memory Stick installed (it didn't come with it--I have one on the way from Amazon). I don't imagine how that could keep it from updating the system, however.

Anybody have any clear and specific help for how I can get this done.

Many thanks folks.

Brad

My apologies if I seemed impertinent. I thought that there was a way to upgrade the OS without converting it to a 760c. If that's the way to go, I'll do it.

2 questions:

1) What do I need to do to ensure that I don't "render it useless"?

2) Anybody still offering the 760c install cd (via FTP, HTTP or snail mail (the last option))?

The 760 install cd does not include the os 4.1 rom, there is no way to ensure you don't "render it useless," but just follow the instructions and you should be fine. However if you ever need warranty or replacement, Sony won't touch it since it was done this way. I did it over a year ago and have had no major problems other than a few soft resets needed, but that could be due to other programs I installed. Best of luck!!

Thanks for the help. I guess I need the updated 4.01 update from Sony...? Is there anything essential on the 760 install CD or can I do without it?

You can pretty well do without it, as was said before, sony no longer offers the rom!! you have to use the link in my previous post, or in geegods post!!

The link that two of you posted for upgrade info does not work (at least not for me).

My son has a 710c and he upgraded it to Palm OS4.x (making it virtually a 760) in Jan 2002. At that time you had to mail the Clie to Sony and pay $50 for the upgrade. At that time Sony made the do-it-yourself option sound very risky.
It is worth upgrading; the graphics improve quite a bit.

Hi,

I'm about to buy a n710c for nostalgia reasons and I want to upgrade it from OS 3.5 to Palm OS 4.1. The links above are broken. Does anyone have a current url or instructions for the upgrade? Further searches didn't bring me much luck.

My first clie was a n760c with a broken screen, and I liked it so much I joined cliesource.

Thanks in advance.

all you need to do the upgrade is use jacksprat to get a rom image form a 760 and flash it onto a 710. electrically they are identical.

I read about that in a previous post, but how do I get jacksprat if brayder has discontinued operations. Also, if anyone has the n710c to n760c updater, then wouldn't that be safer to use?

But thanks, that's another option.

Well of course it is not safe lol. Try finding another place to download it. It's probably free in places now...

there IS no updater, and finding jacksprat is as simple as second result of a well-formed google query.
