'Find' function shows the same eight Contact matches when it should show more

The "Find" function searches through all the databases on your device. palmOne has discovered an issue in which the "Find" function displays a maximum of eight matches in the Contacts application, although there may be more matches in Contacts.

What do you mean by "Find"?
We're talking about the global search function on the Tungsten T5 handheld. "Find" is launched when you tap the small magnifying glass icon in the status bar at the bottom of the screen. When you enter the search term and hit OK, the Tungsten T5 searches through the index files for its databases, application by application.

What is the issue?
In order for this particular issue to occur, all of these factors must be present:

You have more than eight Contacts with the same string of text in their Contact info
Example: you have more than eight people whose last or first names, email addresses, web sites, AIM names or home addresses begin with "sm" — Smilla Anderson, John Smythe, smartypants@palmone.com, www.smittenwithpalmone.com, etc.

You use the built-in "Find" function to locate that text
Example: you search on "sm"

The item you're looking for does not appear in the first screen of Contacts, so you tap Find More.

The same eight Contacts are displayed every time you tap Find More. You can't continue searching in other applications once the eight Contacts are displayed.

What should I do?

The "Find" function is a subsystem of the Palm OS. It is a rudimentary feature of your handheld that performs basic searches. There are third-party search utilities on the market that offer robust features and flexible searching options beyond the basic "Find" function included with the Tungsten T5 handheld (and which do not encounter the issue with displaying only eight Contacts). Search the palmOne Software Connection for third-party handheld search utilities, such as IntelligentFind.

Here, I have to agree with Gekko. This is a poor and, in my opinion, reprehensible response by PalmOne. When a bug is identified, the only response should be the release of a patch to fix the bug. Referring users to third party applications to work around a bug in the PalmOne software is absolutely unacceptable!

What, in heaven's name, is PalmOne thinking?

As an aside, and without in any way justifying PalmOne's ridiculous response, IntelligentFind is a fantastic third party application! It runs a little slower than the built-in find but it's a great replacement for the built-in find. Highly recommended.

Emm... they are asking the users to shell out an extra USD14.95 for what is supposed to be a built-in function of the OS? PalmSource and PalmOne both really need better management people to iron out the bad weeds...

I agree. It's a bad annoyinng bug. Just like the Quick connect not working with the Builtin SMS program. Ridiculous.

I agree. And they "fixed" the SMS issue with an even easier way :-/

SMS option not available when using Quick Connect from Contacts

This article applies to the Contacts application on the Tungsten T5 handheld.

Normally, Quick Connect allows you to send a phone number in your handheld's Contacts to your mobile phone, allowing you to call, text message, or email that person from your mobile phone. It allows you to keep thousands of contacts on your handheld, and use them with your mobile phone.

No SMS option available
When you go into Quick Connect from the Tungsten T5's Contacts, and then select Settings, you'll notice that the SMS pick list contains only one item, "None Available."

You cannot use Quick Connect to send an SMS message from the Contacts application on the Tungsten T5.

Instead, launch the SMS application on your handheld. Create a New message, and tap the To box to quickly look up that person's number in your Contacts list.

But hey, I just found that palmOne has thought this over! In the main FAQ list for T5 I found the following, which is newer than the one that Gekko found in the kb.

Should we cross our fingers?

'Find' function cannot locate a Contact if more than 8 Contacts have the same last name

This issue occurs when you use the Tungsten T5's "Find" feature (located beside the Home icon at the bottom of the virtual writing area). When you have more than 8 (eight) Contacts with the same last name, the Find feature will only locate the first eight. When you select Find More, the same eight Contacts will continue to appear.

For example, let's say you have the following people in your Contacts:

Audrey Horne
Benjamin Horne
Catherine Horne
Donna Horne
Ed Horne
Frank Horne
Garland Horne
Hank Horne
Ingrid Horne
Jerry Horne
(10 Contacts with the last name of Horne)

When you perform the Find function on the word "Horne, you will see a screen with these eight results:

Audrey Horne
Benjamin Horne
Catherine Horne
Donna Horne
Ed Horne
Francine Horne
Garland Horne
Hank Horne
At the bottom of the screen is a Find More button, When you tap it, you'll continue seeing the same eight results, even though you should see the next two results (Ingrid Horne, Jerry Horne) and any instances where the word "Horne" appears in other applications.

What should I do?
This issue is under investigation by palmOne. In the mean time, you may wish to install a robust third-party search utility, such as IntelligentFind, to resolve the issue. Search the palmOne Software Connection for third-party searching utilities.

Here's another Quick Connect bug:

If you use your Dpad to select and open a contact, then use your Dap to navigate up to the Quick Connect button at the top, hit enter and you get ANOTHER contact's dialling/email options!
Is it only me?
