I know this has been brought up literally a million times but I would like to know what the easiest way is to convert movies from dvd onto my clie ux50. I've done a search and there are so many different ways I dont know which one to follow. Right now I am using dvd decrypter -> gordian knot -> tmpgenc -> image converter (for audio I am using headache3 to change ac3 to wav and then merge with video to tmpgenc). Any ideas which works out faster for you with little quality loss? Right now I am using standard mode in image converter and the quality is bareable but not that great.

I use a program called Super DVD Ripper to rip DVDs to mpegs and then I use Image Converter to put it on my memory stick. The movies come out great (I use the High Quality setting). Hope this helps.

I use PocketDVD 1.2.5 to rip dvd to avi file. Convert with IC 1.5. Watch on my UX. Simply & easy.

Thanks for the response. I think I'll give your way a try! BTW, what movie player is that? Is that just a skin for the ux50's movieplayer? Sorry, I'm still new to the UX and still got a lot to learn!

I'm guessing that he's using the MediaLauncher from the VZ90.

I've played around with a lot different movie conversion processies for the palm. For myself the easiest and best quality videos I get, after having converted to the DVD's to avi is to just image converter 1.5. Yes the movies are large ~400 Megs but they are crystal clear and I do have a 2 gig memory stick that I picked up on Ebay for $200 just for this purpose.
Off topic:
If you are going to be using your palm a lot to view tv and movies then invest some money into it, after all most people are willing to shell and several hundred or more bucks to get a new tv to watch in their bedroom/kithcen/bathroom (you take your choice). Since, the only time I have to watch movies or tv is when using the tread mill at the gym my palm is my main movie viewer thus I can justify the expense.

You're right rcxAsh. The movie itself is Austin Powers Goldmember. The info shot is from the VZ media player, the 2nd shot is the movie itself using the VZ media player, & the fullscreen shot is CliePet Full Movie Player.
BTW, does anyone know if a movie can be converted with Pocket DVD fullscreen?? Whenever I convert a movie, no matter what crop function I use, it comes out widescreen like in the shot.

The best method that I have found is, DVD Shrink to DVDX Copy than to Image convertor 1.5.
So a typical duel layered 9gig dvd to 4gig using dvd shrink, convert this to 650mb using dvdx(by the way you can choose to add the commentries to your end file for use with the clie). Finally use image convertor to transfer the 650mg mpeg file to around 170mb.
This is fairly automated and you can set it to run through the night.
hope this helps you

Hey,
I can't comment on the DVD side strategies so no comment other than it lines up with other recommendations i've read. I have been tempted by pocket dvd myself. A question to people who rip then shrink and then shrink again. Why?? I mean unless you want a copy on your pc that you can burn to a cd or something why not just extract then compress for clie? Otherwise wouldnt compressing twice add a lot of time?
As for converting movies with really nice watchable qualities at nice frame rates and resolutions > 320x240 I actually do not recommend ic1.5. To get nice quality out of ic1.5/ic2 takes up about 380-400 MB! I got clued in a while ago to get very watchable quality for about half that space. I'll reference a thread below that actually has a link to some files converted this way so you can judge for yourself.
This is a little more complicated than ic1.5 and requires you install some vz90 codecs on your ux50 but the reason I recommend it (and the reason that I switched to this method) is that if one does two pass variable bit rate encoding 128-768 w/ 256mb avg @ ~25fps you can do ~480x320 video with small sizes and really nice quality. I dont have my desktop handy w/ some movies on it but filesize for 2hr movie ~200-250 MB and quality is much better. A anime episode takes about 60mb at the above settings.
Caveat: You have to install modified codecs. You can find out how to do it here:

The utility itself is at : http://www.nurs.or.jp/~calcium/3gpp/
Dont be afraid of japanese. just download it run program and find the button the marked english and you'll be able to read it.
The thread that is all about 3gp converter is http://www.1src.com/forums/showthread.php?t=75447&highlight=3gp+converter
Getting back to the topic does anybody else use pocketdvd? For just regular dvd uh backups I use dvdxcopy which seems to work quite well.

All I use Pocket Dvd for is converting dvd to Avi for my Ux. Its a matter of clicking 2 buttons & giving the output file a name. I used DVDXCopy 1 year ago & hated it. I only use Shrink or Decrypter. My XCopy disc made an excellent coaster for my beers though. ;) & the box is fantastic for proping open a door.
