I'm looking for a way to add more fonts to my Clie without having to download Hackmaster or a program like it. Is there a way?:confused:

I don't know the answer to your question, but let me assure you that despite the scarey name, Hackmaster is a perfectly safe program that in most cases (definately with a font hack) cannot cause any damage to your Clie. Hacks (or extensions) merely enhance the Palm OS to allow it to do things that it can't otherwise do.

Hackmaster and other such programs gave me some trouble with my last PDA, though it was a Handspring Visor. It crashed the OS a couple of times. That's also why I'm a little hesitant to try Z Launcher or Silver Screen.
Basically though, I'll need Hackmaster to add fonts?

I totally agree with your caution but I can assure you zlauncher is perfectly safe and will enhance your clie enjoyment (and utility) 110%.

Why are you comparing the two?

i'm just a little hesitant to install anything that will significantly change the OS or tweak it. Both Hack Master and Launchers would do that

I suggest using X-Master rather than HackMaster. Much more stable. And yes, it's possible to run into problems with "hacks" because of their nature. But hacks are quite a normal way of enhancing an operating system. There are hundreds of hacks for Windows, they're just not called hacks. Backups and testing is always good. There's a thread about hacks in this forum. I'll bet that most of the people who posted have very few problems with their standard setup.
For fonts, do a search. There have been lost of posts about them. Generally, get X-Master, Fonthack123 and start with Lubak's fonts.
As for launchers, generally, they're just fancy apps. They don't really change the operating system.
Just my .02 worth.

twystinme, i also did feel the same way during the first couple of week i bought my clie quite some time ago.
the word instability, compatible problem, hard-reset, etc. you found in this forum aint helping much either ;)......but....after braving myself and installing the lubak fonts...i just can't never go back to the clie-default thin, stick font again if you know what i mean. My current fav. right now is the SansSeriff 22. Plenty of OS5 font users here though.
And it's a world of difference using the 3rd parties launchers compared to the standard launcher. Or else there won't be countless numbers of launcher-wars around here :D
I also reccomend trying the swiz fonts. Just do a search at PalmGear. When used in conjunction with Fonthack123 they sure do look nice!!

So I downloaded Swiz Fonts this morning and I've been trying to configure it, but all I get is a garbled mess under each icon after I set the font in Font123. Do I need to change the resolution setting?

I couldn't agree more. I don't think I could handle going back to the "shudders" normal font.:eek:

Just for the record - 'Launchers' don't tweak the OS at all...they are merely an application, like any other...
And for some (not all) hacks....TealMaster will run some hacks under OS5...TealLaunch for one...which I've been using for months on both a T|T and an NZ90...:)

I'm still at a loss here. I've been futzing around with Swiz fonts and Lubak fonts all morning (it's been pretty busy at work, obviously) and i still get a garbled mess under each of the icons, and in the programs themselves...what do i do?

I just switched and installed TealMaster, Fonthack123 and Lubak's OS5 fonts and WOW what a difference. Up till now I was using the thin font fix app. I too was never real keen on hacks, could never find any I really had to HAVE but seeing this thread I decided to give it another shot with regards to the whole font situation.
twystinme-
Basically your problem with the mess under each icon is because you need to "map" each of the font sizes (OS5 (0) - standard etc) to each of the built in Clie font's sizes so that the Clie has something to replace them with. If you look on Lubak's website, each font has a chart showing which setting needs to be made to them. I actually didn't notice this myself at first.

Wormpratz,
Thanks for your advice. The Swiz Fonts were recommended to me earlier today so I'm messing around with them. I looked at the readme files both on Lubaks site and in the Swiz zip file, and it's slowly starting to make sense. I thought i had it down, but the fonts are still garbled in certain programs like the calculator etc. I understand what you mean by the mapping, and it's helped a lot.

I didn't check out the readme, so I can't correlate...but right on the website itself it shows you how to set up each font and its easy. Heres an example of what I mean by the mapping. I use OS5 and for that you just "map" the font's to each Clie font listed in Font123
Map fonts:
HrStandard -> OS5 (0)
HrBold -> OS5 (1)
HrLarge -> OS5 (2)
HrLargeBold -> OS5 (3)
Anyway, go here http://www.pilot.sk/lubak/cliefonts.htm to check it out yourself. Good luck!

if you havent try it yet, you should try mcphling as your next hack, highly recommended.

Be VERY careful not to accidently set HrSymbol to OS5(3). You see, the first three (HrStandard, HrBold, and HrLarge) are consecutive, so its easy to stay "in rhythm" and map the wrong font. This screwed me up for a couple of days until I realized what I had done.

What I've noticed is that it only works if you use the fonts with small icons, and even then, I've had trouble in the programs themselves. By the way, where do you get the OS5 fonts. Can you use them with OS 4.1?

Not sure I understand the first sentence of your question.
The "OS5" font works on any OS, but was developed (IIRC) when the first screenshots of OS5 were released. There's a link about 6 posts up to Lubak's page; he's the developer.
I have run a huge amount of aps, and have had no problem with the OS5 font.

The OS5 fonts will work fine with OS 4.1. Download them here (http://www.pilot.sk/lubak/cliefonts.htm) . (make sure you don't hit the link "Fonts for Palm OS 5". Scroll down to the "OS5.pdb" file.) Follow the mapping on that page (also noted here by Wompratz) For starters, just change the "Hr" fonts noted and don't touch anything else. It sounds like you may have changed something other than these "Hr's".

If you use the Swiz Fonts, it comes with detailed instructions on how to set them up in FontHack. If you follow the directions you will have no problems.
The reason for the weird stuff is the Sony Hi-Res implementation of fonts is a little weird. The HR font has to be double the size of the low-res one, otherwise it won't display right (either extra gibberish or letters will be cut off.)

Lubak wrote 3 programs for OS5 called Fonts4TT, Fonts4NX / NZ which make the tasks of changing fonts a hell lot of easier than messing around with fonthack. Personally, while fonthack gives impressive result, I have always find the user interface bloody hedious... ughh! :(
I hope Lubak will come out with something for the rest us OS4.X Clie user in the same line as Font4XX, and I wouldn't mind paying a fee for it.

I am using Fonts4NZ and I love it! While it doesn't supply at huge font selection (five are included), it does allow you to quickly and easily change the default font for all applications and it can automatically move unused fonts to your card.

I'm having trouble getting a new font on my T665. My OS is 4.13. I tried to use fonthack40c and tahoma per Lubak's guidance. But as he notes with this os version you get small letters on a large line along with a bunch of garbage. I would really like to replace the Sony font but at this time it seems it will not work with OS 4.1 versions. Has any one been successful in this area?. I really like the T665 but the standard font is hard for me to read. If all else fails I'm going to try Teal Magnify. Appreciate any help you can offer.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with a T665 that is having the problem of changing the fonts. Despite following the directions on Lubak's website and in Swiz's readme, I still haven't managed to map everything out correctly, to the point where i don't see garbage either under the icons on the main desktop, or in an actual program. Welcome to the club, Wizardb...

If you have trouble with the Swiz fonts, try Lubak's OS5 set. The setup seems much easier. I haven't overridden anything. That's what I use and have not had any problems on my T665. I originally tried the thin-font fix but the OS5 fonts are much better. I have not tried the Swiz fonts as yet because OS5 is quite nice. If I get some time, I'll play with Swiz.

I'm using Fonthack and Swiz Fonts perfectly on my SJ33 (OS 4).
Can you list all the font substitutions you've made in FontHack? That may help with troubleshooting.

Madmaxmedia,
I gave up trying to configure the Swiz Fonts. I don't suppose you could post what you have and i'll plug those settings into my FONTHACK123 and see what happens. Thanks..

Hey Twyst,
Originally I was using this:
My Setting:
Standard swiz21(0) Standard LowRes Substitution Font 11p
Bold swiz21(0) Standard LowRes Substitution Font 11p
Large swiz21(1) small HiRes* Font 14p
LrgBold swiz21(1) small HiRes* Font 14p
HRStandard swiz21(3) Standard HiRes Font 22p
HRBold swiz21(4) Bold HiRes Font 22p
HRLarge swiz21(5) Large HiRes Font 28p
HRLrgBold swiz21(5) Large HiRes Font 28p
Slightly changed from Swiz, everything is sized correctly so I wasn't getting any squiggly lines.
Now I'm using this:
My Tweaked Setting:
Standard swiz21(0) Standard LowRes Substitution Font 11p
Bold swiz21(0) Standard LowRes Substitution Font 11p
Large Tahoma16(1) small HiRes* Font 14p
LrgBold swiz21(1) small HiRes* Font 14p
HRStandard swiz21(3) Standard HiRes Font 22p
HRBold swiz21(4) Bold HiRes Font 22p
HRLarge OS5(3) Large HiRes Font 28p
HRLrgBold swiz21(5) Large HiRes Font 28p
I like the fonts better, although I occasionally see some squiggles. I like the Tahoma 16 font for reading books, etc.
Overall a good tradeoff for me, I'm sure I will continue tweaking.

It worked! Thanks so much, madmaxmedia. Now I can actually see the text clearly on my T665. I really appreciate it!
