View Full Version : Does size really matter?

Before I purchased my NZ and before I had seen one in person, I heard a lot of hype about the hugeness of this new Clie. Now that I have owned one for a little over a week, I'd have to say I actually PREFER it over the smaller units.

I've been known to chant "bigger is better" about almost anything - TVs, houses, cars, hard drives ;-), etc.... and this is no exception. My last Clie was an NR70V and although I liked the form of the NR, I really like the NZ better. It just feels more solid in my hands. When I take it out I've heard comments like "wow, it's really big." And I just say, "Why, thank you."

Granted, I'm a female and I mainly carry mine in a purse, so I guess the men who like to pocket their devices might prefer the smaller PDAs. But for now, I'll just stick with my motto - bigger really IS better.

SO many landmines in your post!!!!

To keep it on the straight and narrow, I find the size of the NZ just right. The NX was a little to thin on the bottom for extended reading, IMO. I like the size of the NZ more for reading/surfing. It fits nicely and I don't have huge hands...

Now if Vaja or Sena would come out with nice cases....

I had both the NX and now the NZ, and I too prefer the NZ size.

I used to have problems opening the NX because it was too thin.
(you had to hold the lower part barely by the edges, or otherwise your fingers would cover the lid part as well making it harder to open.)

the NZ is perfect size. As for carying it around, some companies make jeans and pants with really nice large pockets (Tommy's jeans could almost fit a laptop in the front packets ;) I've heard Dockers have some special pants for handhelds as well ...

as always, my 2c

I have to agree too. I've used a IIIc, and an iPAQ.

If the NZ is a brick, then the iPAQ with the two PC Card sleeve is a cinder block.

I have small hands and still find the NZ quite comfortable in both modes. hough for longer term use I usually switch to tablet.

I'm still using the Compaq case, but would love something in the same design but better material and workmanship.

I also feel that size is a non-issue. The NZ90 fits in my pocket and the size of the screen makes all of the documents more easily readable.

As I have stated 100 times, the size issue is a joke. Going on 3 weeks now with my NZ-90, and the size has never once been an issue or problem. I keep mine in my back pocket most the time. I find the NZ fits my hand just right, and is very solid feeling.

Like one poster said, the Ipaq with a sleeve attached is truly a brick.

Got my NZ 10 days ago. Love the screen size and resolution! I'm able to put off replacing my desktop PC with a laptop for a while longer now. Wireless LAN card and bluetooth phone as modem really make it work!

Moved up from Treo. Treo's size was perfect for an all-in-one but screen size made it impractical to use preparing more than short messages. NZ is much better!

Do folks use NZ when grocery shopping? NZ seems more conspicuous than did Treo for this.

Is the bluetooth need to configure anything like wifi wireless lan?

Its not the size, its how you use it....

sorry, had to say that..

anyway, i got to play with it, and Sony is sending me one for review as well, so that will be fun. My only complaint though IS the battery life. Especially the way Ed Hardy over at Brighthand told us about it.

Jon - Yes! I use my NZ at the grocery store (with Handyshopper). And I use a fingertip stylus to check everything off. It is conspicuous, but I'm more worried about theft or breakage. In fact, I broke my first PDA (Handspring Visor Prism) while at the grocery store. I dropped it and cracked the screen! Talk about panic! I'm guarding this NZ puppy like a hawk!

The NZ90 feels solid and the size is actually a non issue. I rather have a solid piece of hardware then a wimpish girlish piece of hardware.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my NZ90 and think the size is absolutely perfect for all of the functions you get with this unit. This PDA rocks!! I'm having a blast using my new NZ90...at any moment I have great music, great books, great games, great camara and an overall great PDA right at my fingertips! I haven't even begun to use all of the incredible functions yet and look forward to surfing the internet soon with my unit.
Jon, I also use mine at the grocery store, (with SplashShopper,) and love the ease of only having to use the jog dial to scroll through my list and delete items as I go.

i think this post is a bit too bias.......

i mean c'mon let me ask you this. if you had a choice, would you make the nz thinner? or keep it a brick

dont compare it with an ipaq, compare it to every other unit SONY every made !!

Aussie,
Hey, we like it!!! That's why we bought it... Your biased, too.... Why get upset? Are ya jealous?!!! ;)

If you had the choice, would YOU make the NX thinner?

I had an NR70V and now have the NZ90, so I can compare the two. While the NR was nice and light, I'm not at all bothered by the size and weight of the NZ. At times it even feels more solid than the NR and more easy to hang on to.

So would I like the NZ thinner? The answer is simply: I don't care either way. I bought the NZ for the features, not the size/weight ratio. Some people will prefer a slimmer model, and then the NX is a great PDA for them.

I love my NZ and the only complaint I have was the price I paid. If you have large hands like I do then the NZ is a perfect fit and the NR, just for me, always felt too small.

I just love these discussions...

All -

I have to admit, the size scared me at first ::GRIN:: and no, I can't carry my NZ in all of the places I used to...but in practice, it is the most comfortable PDA I've ever used...in every situation, it fits well.

I've said it before...moving the hotsync connector to the back allows me to have a cable hooked up to my cell phone, and still rest the device comfortably on my stomach without it leaning to one side or the other...additionally opening it in tablet mode and leaving it as a 'v' it provides it's own pedestal for viewing when a cable is used instead of the cradle...

In all fairness, I agree that the PEG NZ90 is comfortable to hold, and a feature packed machine, however after 2 weeks I returned it primarily because of its weight and size. I went back to the NX because of its: slimness, superior video capture, instant still photo capture, easy record (I had difficulty finding the voice record button on the NZ) and I really didn't find the NX's screen brightness to be that much of a comprimise.
note: with the announcement that the NZ is not taking advantage of Memory StickPro's speed, I hope that the new NZ replacement this summer will bring improvements including: photo and video capture; an A/V out which will actually work outside of ClieAlbum; a direct connection to the unit for charging, etc, rather that lugging the cradle, etc., . Good luck with your units, I loved mine while I had it, but it was just too darn clunky.

I disagree with your clunkiness verdict, but your list of improvements sound good. There's always room for improvement...

I hope that the next NZ model isn't before fall. My checkbook can't take it!!!!

i think the jealous part was a said in jest :) cuz that type of remark is a bit too childish for me.

actually im fortunate enough to own the following:

Palm m505
Palm m515
Pam m130
Palm V
Palm Vx
Palm IIIc
IPAQ 3630
IPAQ 3870
SONY NR70
SONY NR70V
SONY NX70V
SONY NZ90V
NINO 300
Tungsten
Cassiopeia

just to name a few.........

if i had a choise then yes i would made every one of the devices i owned smalle, lighter, stronger..etc

im not really biased nor am i upset. i just think with the way technology is heading with the SONY N range, they are heading into dangerous territory

and for those of you wondering why i have so many units, its because i cant get enough of them. Its my hobby. I am to get a whole stack more for my collection.

aussie_nx70v,
 wow i think you got too much money to spend.
Below i will descibe each opinion of mine whether i buy or not.

Palm V - 2mb only - use sharp instead as too expensive at that time.S$699-US$400 for non-colour
Palm Vx - got it 3 years ago
Palm IIIc - lousy colour, too bulky
Palm m505 - got N760 first which are better quality/functions
Palm m515 - got N760 first which are better quality/functions
Pam m130 - in Singapore it is a common free gift from companys/banks?? if not, buy for what purpose?

IPAQ 3630 - not so friendly/ difficult to use the touchscreen / bulky
IPAQ 3870 - not so friendly/ difficult to use the touchscreen / bulky

SONY NR70 - ok, at least better than IPAQ
SONY NR70V -what is the diff with NR70?
SONY NX70V - got it at last December.
SONY NZ90V - wat is the diff between NX70v deside bluetooth + 2 mb camera and removeable batt ? I was thinking to buy one as my NX70 sold it for S$860=US$488 at auction.

NINO 300 -don't even think of it.
Tungsten - no MP3/camera/video/voice recorder/remote control/photo editor/
Cassiopeia -totally giveup-can't stand it's outlook - IPAQ is better than this.

Pls do not be offence as above is just my opinion only.;)
