Hi,
A friend got a new pocket pc with gps. After driving around with her, I want one too. Not a pocket pc. GPS, on my NX80. Does such a thing exist? Where?
I live in Israel so I would need to buy map software here, but can buy the hardware in the US if anyone has a link.
Thanks,
Vered

Anyone? I saw a thread here about GPS which said to check out the compact flash forum, but I can't find that forum - possibly disappeared when the site changed from clieone to 1src ? Or is it somewhere and I just haven't found it?

Good luck finding a CF GPS receiver with Palm OS drivers available. I think Peleca was working on enabling CF GPS, but not sure how successful he was. Your best bet may be to get a garmin etrek or something like that and a cable that connects it to the bottom of your NX80. The next problem will be to find suitable map software. Mapopolis is an OK solution for the US and Europe, but don't know where you will find maps for Israel. The truth is that GPS is much better supported on PPC devices than on Palm devices.

Here's the setup I have. Clie NX73v Haicom GPS mouse (wired) which powers my clie at the same time (although it seems it doesn't charge it after a long journey if I use the clie alot the battery runs down pretty quick but I always have a car charger anyway so no biggy)
Mapsonic which is the closest thing you will get to Tom Tom, perfect speach door to door directions, the maps run quickly from the memory stick, it has a night mode for driving at night which is VERY good. cut the maps you want for trips or like me cut a large area you regularly cover. the only thing Mapsonic lacks is postcode search and way points. but there is a good point of interest system and you can add your own points. On the Viamichelin (mapsonic) website there is a patch 3.2 I think which smooths out some of the polygons and adds tungsten full screen portrait support. BUT the graphic upgrade for polygons needs more memory to run the program, about 16mb so it's not much use for clie users because even with jackflash you'd be hard pushed to find that much memory, it is essential you install the tungsten full screen patch though otherwise you get 320 x 320 display.
Forget CF GPS it's not that reliable yet and you will still need to charge / power your clie for long use.
When I know where I'm going I use my clie as an in car MP3 player and my 512mb sandisk CF card is full of music. when I really need to pay attention to the directions I leave the audio cassette adaptor plugged in and I get voice directions through my car speakers which is really cool.
I bought the Haicom GPS mouse including the charge cable from ebay for about £70. the only issue which threw me was that because the cable is only listed for NX70's I think there is a subtle difference in the connection and therefore when it is powered up the charger icon on your clie will not change, but you will see it powers the clie to 100% all the time it is plugged in. after much searching I could not find an updated cable for the NX73v specifically.
MAPSONIC can be bought direct from Viamichellin for about £150 BUT if you look here http://www.totalpda.co.uk/ProductView.aspx?id=5119&mode=4 you can get it about £60 cheaper so the whole deal will cost about £170.
I have noticed that TomTom now has a free upgrade for Speed camera alerts which looks usefull but it is only packed for the Tungsten series, that said I have seen forums suggesting you buy TomTom for Palm Tungsten then just transfer the data off the card they send to a memory stick but whether this works I don't know.
Mapsonic has saved my life a few times since I bought it, finding that I haven't got time to get from one location job to another using the routs I know and each time Mapsonic has taken ways I never knew exsisted. If my clie had died I would have been lost in the middle of nowwhere without a clue but mapsonic got me there everytime and my clie never breaks down unlike many pocket PC PDA's I hear of.
I hope this helps.

Thanks for all the indepth information you have given us. I have wanted GPS for ages and keep reading all the threads to try and fined a good way to do it. Your system seems to be one of the best setups I have heard of so far.

I did what you mentioned having read in a forum: do have a NX70, bought the TomTom software for the Tungsten and cannot transfer them to the Clie. Do you remember what forum mentioned those actions. Thanks

I've got the same setup as ir803, only mine is NX70V. The indicator on the screen doesn't show clie charging, but the light on the power button turns orange and it charges it (tested on some long journeys).
One problem though - I hardly managed to get 9 MB of free space on my clie. I keep my maps on the CF and if it's a bigger sized map, mapsonic shouts at me to give it more memory.
Another thing- can't get voice promts on time, so I just disabled them ( for some reason when clie speaks, the movement on the display stops for the duration of the promt).

Might be a problem with the configuration of MCA2 or lack thereof.

hmmm
MCA2 is installed
It's just that... I wonder if it should be disabled for Mapsonic :/
Well, anyway, if I stick the sound files back in, I'll lose the precious RAM space :(
