I can now buy an iLife? :)
BTW I bought a G5 iMac (20") in November, it's been wonderful. :)

It is a beaut, WHAT a beaut. And all those complaining (as always a pittance of memory) about the lack of this or that... IT's for that 2nd computer in the household... but OMG college students, the ipod owners, etc...
AMAZING!!!

A 1.25Ghs is not a slouch either. This thing is well worth the cost with DVI and bluetooth. My little Samsung 15" was only $279 and it has DVI and if you don't buy memory from Apple, this thing is very reasonable. :)

I "switched" in November and have not looked back (now own both an eMac and an iBook which has replaced my PDA.) You may actually spend more than $499, but the basic unit is pretty good. Just buy some more RAM 3rd-party for much cheaper. Adding another 512 (for 768 MB total) is more than enough for most general usage.
OS X is really, really sweet. Tiger will be even better with widgets and Spotlight. The Mac is back!!!

Nope, sadly, from the internal pictures of it that I have, there is only one RAM slot.

It would be nice if the no mouse option were available for all Macs. Maybe I can find some Mini buyers interested in a slightly dusty, but never used mouse. :)

Is it the black mouse?
Actually, I want an original Apple Pro USB Keyboard. The same one that came with the Cube. Now, THAT was a nice keyboard. Kinda big, but it had 2 USB ports and the design was right-on.

Yep, tis black. I have two of the black pro keyboards here, one is on my G4, the other is for my Powerbook when I'm working on site. I like the side USB ports better, but the white keyboard I just got has 2 on the back.
And of course I have a white mouse now.

I think that it will have an extremely difficult stand against PC's. The PC's simply have stronger Hardware and more applications available for them.
The Palm OS survived in IIIc times because of the good, strong applications and the huge market share!
Apple's share is too small to really push it out....

OK, I have an silly (perhaps stupid question) but here goes, I have a Windows XP, Laptop, anyone have any creative ideas how I could leverage that hardware with a purchase of just the Mini Mac, i.e. make use of the laptop's keyboard, and display??
Thanks for any insght
Reggie

If you are using a USB keyboard on your PC, then you can use it. As for the display, the mac can use it. As for your mouse, any USB mouse would work.

Unless your notebook has a VGA or DVI input on the back that will allow other devices to utilize it's screen, I don't think this is possible.
I saw a little 15" LCD from Dell for $224 on their site and $198 on www.pricewatch.com.
They sell screens with dual inputs on the back, so that the notebook and mini could both utilize the same screen.

I was actually pretty excited about this thing, being a PC man myself. I think my next machine will be a mac. I really want to see how things go with it. So looking at this I thin k "oh sweet I can get what I want in a mac and it shouldn't burn a complete hole in my wallet", but after looking at that price with the extras, I might as well wait around and save more for a powerbook.
Meh.

Actually, the very first white apple keyboards had the same exact design as the black one. The minor change happened before you could buy them seperately from the iMac G4, though.

It's easy to bring the price up to a grand if you add a lot of stuff. But if you just want a basic Mac to try out, about the only thing you really need to add is another 256 or 512 MB of RAM. Which should be bought for less from someone other than Apple.
But add in Bluetooth, the wireless keyboard/mouse, Airport Extreme, etc., and yeah it will cost you.

If you would have looked at the product page, you can plainly see it is neither. It's a very small computer that could comfortably sit on top of a tower.

It's a full tower. :D *kidding.*
Why is my right proc always running at about 80% idle and my left about 20%. My G4's procs both run at 1 or no bars during idle.

Yes. Which is why I might as well save for a powerbook. Good starter mac though, no doubt about it. And it's so small you could practically take it with you if you needed to.

I think this is taking coincidence too far... http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20050113PR202.html
However it is a good article on making a mountain out of a molehill. I just think the mini was designed to set flat rather than on its side.

Holy crap, I really might have to hold off buying a PSP and save like crazy.

It will be here soon, if not a dual core G4 which is already in production.
Me and the laty will be trading up to G5 powerbooks end of year, if available. If not I can hold off until next year. My TI still does an excellent job, the only thing I would change is the internal HD, 4200 RPM is too slow. :)
I usually prefer buying rev 2 or 3 Apple products, so that's also on my mind. So I hope the G5 Powerbook is released this May.

iBooks are perhaps the best deal of all. Due to lack of CPU upgrades by IBM, the 12" iBook and PowerBook are not far apart. The PowerBooks are really sweet of course, but my iBook was only $899 from Amazon after rebate.
That changes when the G5 PowerBooks come out, then I will be lusting after one of those...

My parents 1Ghz iBook was only $1099 last year and it has faster memory and a faster GPU then my 1Ghz TI Book. It's been a great system for them and was sooooo much faster then the slugeron they were on. It was a much better deal then all the PC laptops in the same price range at the time.

You are correct. The 1Ghz was the first 12" to have mini-DVI. I'm just confused, I totally forgot about the 867 and kept on thinking my friend's was the first one. :)
<]=)
zackepceo
01-14-2005, 05:43 PM
Yeah. In addition to only having VGA, the 867 likes to throttle itself down to 550MHz until you restart it a few times. The good thing is that the battery really lasts quite a while. 4 hours of fairly intensive use with Bluetooth.
JackAxe
01-14-2005, 08:21 PM
That's excellent time. I need to call Apple to get my battery replaced. It was in the laty's PB and started to die at only 88%, so I traded with her just to see if it was the battery and sure enough, it dies at about that everytime. The warrning message no longer pops up.
I'll get it replaced on the 22cnd when I pickup GB2. Since our warranties are good for another year.

This battery seems to be particuarly good. The only thing that really turns me off about the 15" is the wimpy 43-watt battery. The Tibook had an above adequate 64-watt..
JackAxe

Yummy, I have a 64-Watt battery. It's 2 years old now, so I figure age just got to it.

Just reading through a bit of the contest thread, it's amazing how many people are considering "switching" just because of the Mac mini. It's turning into the big turning point for OSX I hoped it would be.
I put switching in quotes because most people keep the Windows machine around. I sure did. Both my XP Desktop and Powerbook have things they do best.
I'd like a Mac mini, but I'm taking a personal finances class that's making me realize that $700 would do me better in an investment. :-(
