Has anyone setup an iPod Mini with Win98? I am trying to decide if I need to upgrade my home PC to Win2K/WinXP. I would like to stick with Win98, but the Mini specs call for Win2K/XP. I bought it for my wife for Christmas and would like to get it setup with as little expense as possible. I have already had to buy a USB 2.0 card, and hub.

I don't really know. But I don't know why you wouldn't want to upgrade to WinXP. It's far superior to Win98 after the updates.

According to iTune's specs, it will ruin only on the following:
Microsoft Windows 2000 128 MB, Microsoft Windows XP, Apple MacOS X 10.x

well, you can always get a mac and pay the $$ to someone else... unfortunately, OSes do not last forever. XP will eventually be replaced, as will OSX for apple, as do current linux distributions. All things have a lifespan, you can stretch it, but you cannot stop it. :)

Your "ruin" finger-flub seems appropriate. I didn't want to "ruin" my Win98 system, but it looks like I will have to upgrade. Well, it's been seven years, so I guess it's about time.

So true, Cat. I have had seven years with my trusty Win98, so I guess I will just have to upgrade. Does anyone know how to play Taps? :(

iPod and ruin... *never.* :D
7 years on 98. http://www.bainne.com/fun/eeek.gif
Just do the second drive thing, this way you can keep Win98 on your comp, but also have access to chee.. XP. 2 OS's are better then one. :)
But if Apple releases a headless iMac, I heard that it might be a media center, so that would be an excellent option and good entry point into the Mac. I have iTunes on my PCs, but because of the integration thing, it's nicer on my Macs.

BTW, If you pc was built in the 98 days, if you upgrade only your OS to XP, it will be slow as hell. Even though XP min req. 64mb of RAM, having less than 256mb will be so slow. You may want @ least a 1gig proc. as well .

As long as you don't mind not using any of the bundled software, it might be possible to get the iPod mini to work in Win98 - The trick is finding drivers that add USB Mass Storage support to Win98 - Often, cheap-o USB flash pens give this (The more expensive branded ones tend to have Win98 drivers that are locked to that specific key, making them useless for what we want here.)
If you can get them, then you just plug the iPod in and copy your songs and crap across :)

Yeah, I know that it will be slow. But I will simply be using it until Back-to-school sales hit this summer and then I will lobby for a new PC. My excuse..."honey we need a better PC for all those kid-pics of our two year old, and we need a better pc to hold all of that music for YOUR iPod Mini." I just have to get her hooked on the iPod first. :D

Man, I was reading an article the other that stated how within the last 2 yrs Ipods have revolutionized mp3 players like Sony did walkmans in the early 90's. That is definitely a true statement!! I dont think a day goes by that I dont see a person with an Ipod, read about some new paraphernalia for them or hear of them on the news. Alot of companies have also made alot of $$$ selling a wide variety of accessaries for them. These things have come around almost like a plague!! Im into gadgets & electronics to the extreme, although I still haven't tinkerd with 1 yet. I guess part of the reason is b/c I have a 256mb flash mp3 player & a 1 & 2gb MS for my Clie that I use for audio, video, docs etc. I have over 20gigs of music on my pc, although I only listen to about 10-12 gigs of it. If that much. Besides, I rather have only my pda with me b/c of all the other functions that I use it for. (Wifi, movies PIM etc)
Well, thats it. I just thought I'd share my opinion on Ipods
BTW, do most people with Ipods use them to keep a backup their files from their pc's??

I don't use it for permanent backup, but sometimes I transfer my project files to it when I need to run out the door in a hurry. Then I transfer them back to my Powerbook when I get to my destination. I did use it as a temp backup when helping my friend set up his new PB. I decided to use his installation disc and upgrade my OS, so it came in very handy.
I only have about 4 gigs of music on my 15G iPod.
I used to use my Clié for audio and opted not to get an iPod a few years back thinking that the Clié would be the all in one end-all-solution. (Still looking for this. I want something as powerful as a noteboook, but as small a a PDA.) :) Afterall, a MP3 player is just an MP3 player. Boy was wrong in soooo many ways. Just the audio quality alone, even with the same headphones is noticeably much better then the Clié, even with the same MP3s. To top that off, Sony included absolutely the worst interface software ever created and should probably be shot for this abomination; Behold the *vomit* that is SonicStage. That and Sony's big brother ATTRAC forcing tactics made my whole audio experience with the Clié a painful memory. I will never rely on Sony for any digital music device again unless they take note of what Apple has done. But it wouldn't be a stand alone MP3 player like the iPod, it would be something like a PSP.
I personally don't have any 3rd party accessories for my iPod. I've only bought an extra Firewire doc cable.
As of now there's nothing out there that offers the integration and simplicity that's found with iTunes and the iPod. It's the reason they're doing so well. Apple gives you plenty of options and makes it easy to do so. They don't care if you use WAV, MP3, or AAC as an example and that's completely evident in their products. This is where Sony went completely wrong and why they have failed so far.
Sony will probably be doing some kind of partnership with Apple this year. Their president was at the Keynote thingy this month.

Im going to check out a Ipod one of these days. To each his own. Like I said before, I rather carry 1 device with me that can be used for more than mp3 playback. Maybe since I've never listened to mp3s on a Ipod my Clie sound quality is good to me. I like being able to switch from mp3's to watching an episode of Seinfeld, or Dave Chappell show, then look up a contact phone #. Having 1.5 gigs of music is enough for me.
Once Apple makes an Ipod that can be used to connect to WiFi & produce a screen shot like the ones below, then I'll be sold. :D

Then it would no longer be an iPod. ;) I'm hoping for an iPod that will also play video though. That would be worth an upgrade. I would definately want a larger screen like the UX, but I wouldn't want to sacrifice the controls. The scroll wheel is absolutely great no matter what angle. It's so easy to use for volume. searching, etc... So I'm hopping Apple will figure out somehting that keeps the unit small, but with a larger screen and the same size controls. (I don't ask for much.)
I encode all my music Apple Lossless, so even wtih my limited CD collection I would eat 1.5 gigs up. :) My taste in music gets eaten by compression, so lossless is a good trade off, or I can just copy the CD AIF file directly to the iPod. :) I was originally using some Sony earbuds ($50) and was quite happy with them on my Clié. But when I moved to the iPod, they no longer cut it and sounded like pooo. They lacked dynamics, or something like that.
At least with a UX50, (if I recall correctly) it can also use PALM's sound format? So it can use other MP3 players? I really like the UX's and was planing on getting one until Sony pulled out. *bastards* :( I Still might if I can get a UX50 for couple of hundred. :)
I'm torn on the PSP, but I'll probably end up getting one for videos, but only if it's $199 like they promised. I can use my own encoders to prep the video and iTunes for music playlists, so it caught my interest. But when can I get a 1Gig MS Pro for under a hundred.

That Ipod would sell quickly too.

I have some $15 Sony earphones now. I may look into getting some better ones to see if there is a difference.

Yes it does & can. But when you use other mp3 players, the battery life is terrible. If you can find a UX in good condition & the price is right, you better purchase it quickly.
But when can I get a 1Gig MS Pro for under a hundred.
There are one's online for 100 bucks now. I saw a 2gig the other day for $220 & $250.

I can stomache $100 for a 1Gig, the ones on Sony's were a couple of hundred, so I was weary about going down the MS road again. A UX and a 1gig for about $300 would be an easy spend. :) It would be good for a trip to Disneyland when standing in line.
Here's what I got for headphones, the Sennheiser PX100. (http://www.devhardware.com/c/a/Speakers/Sennheiser-PX100/) I paid only $50 at the time.
Vijax recommended them and he really knows his audio. They sound better then any other headsets I've owned, even my old full sized Sony's that were over $100. And they sound just as good, if not better then my friend's Bose which were tripple the price. After using these, I will never every buy any Sony heaphones agian. I'll take these over even the most expensive Sony's.
And the fold up for easy travel. :)

Lanman,
I just got an iPod mini the other day as a gift. I have the same problem as you did, the desktop I work on most often is in the office, and our network system is on Win98, so even I can't really change my system to xp even if I wanted to.
Long story short, I searched and searched, found many software that can work on win98, but you have to buy the software and it's quite pricey. Searched some more and found the solution here:
http://republika.pl/mho/ipod/
Best of all, it's FREE!!! My favorite kind of software.
It works fine, I can transfer mp3 files to and from my ipod easily. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the tip, Godfather (I feel that I should be kissing your ring or something). However, I already bit the bullet and upgraded my desktop to XP. I working well so far. Thanks for everyone's help.
There is a webpage regarding using iPod under Windows 98: iPod Windows 98 drivers page (http://www.98-drivers.com/ipod.html)
I use my ipod mini on winme with Ephpod. Ipod restore feature works as well on it too. Itunes is complete garbage. Ephpod has way more features that are useful that itunes doesnt have.
http://www.ephpod.com/
Attention, Ephpod doesn't work with the new iPods (those with Video) and sometimes corrupts its internal database.
It is very good for older iPods though.
