I am in dire need of a new cell phone, and this is the newest one put out by my carrier (Cingular/ATT). Does anyone know anything about this phone? The main drawback is its price, but I want to know if it's worth it. Anyone know of any cell phone review sites or something that I could browse around on and make a decision?

I recommend cellphoneforums.net, as well as howardforums.com. The latter has not been as useful to me, though I have gotten some info from there that the former didn't have, so I use it as a backup. Also, cellphoneforums.net seems to be a little overrun by bratty kids. Still, a useful site.

Also, I can summarize mostly everyone's opinion of the Razr: too expensive for what it delivers. I loved it when I first saw it, looked like a cell phone Tron would use. But I'd rather spend that money on a better phone with better features, like the Sony Ericsson s710a. It's been delayed for months, which has been annoying since I'm without a phone for now, but I'm committed to getting it unless something better comes along in the meantime.

The phone looks cool...that's about it imo. As far as features...'bout average. But when you factor in the price, yer gettin screwed. It's a fortune, and you're paying such an exorbitant price just for the "I have the coolest new phone" factor.

I agree. While it caught my eye when introduced and I still drool a little when I see the commercials, it is way too expensive. I just checked Cingular's website and it costs $520 with a 2 year contract. I carry my current phone (LG VX4400) (only cost $50) on my belt, and I'd be way to nervous to carry the Razr like that.

Yea. Even with the discount you get for a contract (Which I need to renew, which is why I need to find a good GSM phone), it's still in the 400 dollar range. No. Thanks.
Thanks for your input so far.

That phone was made as part of an exclusive sale. Atleast here it was meant for the celebs only and then decided to let it out to the common people. The price still remains sky high and about the only thing that would make you kill for it, is the looks. Yeah, its one looker but nothing on the fetures ... you might wanna have a look at the Samsung D410 (the D415 in the US) .. I'm thinking of buying it though the features are relatively basic (as compared to the very very high end models) .. :)

So I have four models of Motorola phones I'm choosing from.

V180, V220, V400, V551

Now it seems that the 400/500 models are mostly the same in terms functionality, But I can't decide if I want a smaller phone or not. Any ideas?

Laser cut keypad... if that's not worth $520, I don't know what is!

If I had $500 to spend on a cell phone, it would be all about the Treo 650.

Laser cut keypad

I thought I read somewhere about an 'acid cut' keypad?

I think it was in a press release, because I'm pretty sure I read it on Phonescoop when the phone was first announced.

I found mention of "laster-etching" in many reviews online.

Aircraft-grade aluminum casing and laser-etched keys in one of the most innovative designs ever released by Motorola!

i thought it was acid etched too - if I remember correctly i read that on GSM arena  - seriously HomieS look beyond Motorola - there are far better brands than that - Nokia/Samsung/Sony - they pack much better features and are really worth money that you put in .... of course if it has something to do with you service provider and the like then thats something else - but if you have the choice, look at the other models ... GSM arena lists a lot of models :)

The V3 is a nice phone. I bought it on Ebay for about a third less than local retail and think it is excellant IMHO. The only problems are the usual ones when buying the latest models such as no phone drivers from PalmOne i.e. Using the standard GSM driver released in Nov will get you "send" but no "receive" for the sms app. Even Funsms5 which does not use the phone drivers will not work although the developer has told me that FunSMS 6 will hopefully be out in spring (what is that in Aussie seasons?) so may get my full T3 connectivity back.

Anyway, I love the look, feel and function and it goes very nicely with a Palm T3...

Holy crap I didn't even think about ebay. Thanks for that tip!

Seph, I'm limited in my purchase because of cost factor AND I'm renewing my plan, meaning I can get a good discount on the phones they are selling online with a contract extension. So basically I'm going with that I can get. I've seen all the models that Motorola has to offer at GSMarena too.

Well, I settled for the Motorola V551, I just took it out of the box, I'm going to spend the rest of the night getting this thing setup for my tastes, I'll also go out to Best Buy tomorrow and get a USB bluetooth adapater as well as a case. Great phone though, it feels great in my hands and the construction seems solid. I'm happy so far.

I found that I could Send SMS to the V3 if I change the Phone settings to "Standard GSM" and then change to the "UPDD" phone connection driver to receive.

Any one found away to compose a custom string to make this work without switching:
Standard GSM String : E0V1+CMEE=1;+CSCS="GSM";+CMGF=0
UPDD String : &FV1E0X1

I'd just like to point out that it costs 30 bucks from the motorola website for their software to connect the phone to your pc (whether via cable or bluetooth). I think that's crap, and I didn't pay a cent for my copy. They've got my 100 bucks.

That being said, this is my first bluetooth device, and I think it is awesome. it connects flawlessly, now I know why everyone says bluetooth is worth it.
