View Full Version : Nintendo DS for me!!!

My grubby hands finally found there way to one. :D Luckily my friend's work just got some into today. Went to the EVIL Walmart the other day and they had been completely raped of them last month and had no idea when to expect more.
I didn't buy it for the current DS games though, I bought it for a better play experience with the GBA game "Zelda the Minish Cap" (Will be available on the 10th) when I'm away from the GameBoy player on my GameCube. :)
It's charging. :)

I'm undecided about getting a DS. I've already invested alot of money in games for my evil Pocket PC (I'm addicted to Zuma right now)

It's well worth it if you like GBA type games. I'm addicted to Zelda. The controls are really comfortable, much nicer then the SP or old GBA for me and the screen looks great.
Only 2 more days. :)

I'm undecided about the DS. I'm hoping someone I know will get one so I can spend some time playing it. I have a GBA, but I don't play it that often. Mostly for long trips, which are not that frequent for me. None of the games really interest me yet, but if a really great one comes out that does something very cool with the second screen, I might be swayed. Frankly, a nice port of the old 2-screen Game and Watch games would probably get me for nostalgia reasons.
Right now I'll wait and see. I do 99% of my gaming at home, and I'm currently assembling a new gaming PC, so that should keep me busy and financially tied up for a while. :)

I just bought an SP a few months ago, but the DS is a nice piece.
"Minish Cap" is well spoken of on the forums I see it mentioned.
My current obsession is Mario Golf Advance Tour for GBA/SP, wow.

I personally wouldn't buy a DS if I had a SP right now, nor would I would I buy one for it's current selection of games. But since I didn't own a SP, this thing was a great choice over the SP for my GBA games. My friend mentioned that Nintend will release a bulk of the DS titles when the PSP is finally released here in the US.
The screen alone was well worth it. I'm playing "The Link to the Past" on it and it's soo nice to play on such an even and vibrant screen. It's extended battery life is also more like the SP; about 10 hours for GBA games. The only draw back is that I can't use it to link to my GC, but it isn't a Gameboy and it would require a seperate wi-fi adapter which the next gen Nintendo system will have built in.

I love the New Nintendo DS system even though I have a SP as well. The colours are better on the DS where the SP looks washed out. The music too, OMG its just much louder. I love it ^_^. Sure the DS don't have too much games right now, but Metroid Prime Hunters keep me entertained plust all the GBA games I have. Love the strategy games like Advance Wars, Final Fantasy Tactics and much more games that take up my time :). Just weird how the simple games take up more of my time than the 128 bit gamin machines and computer. I guess I just love portable gaming hehe.

Same here, simple games like Zelda consume way more of my time then most of the newer stuff. There's just too much fluff out there. :)
I have an old GBA with Afterburner, so it's screen quality and battery life are quite poor. If the DS wouldn't of played GBA games, then I would've purchased a SP earlier this year. I'm really happy with it's overall quality and feel. It's much easier for me to hold and play then my old GBA.
I'm still waiting for The Minish Cap. My friend said they should be in tomorrow. :) And since I preordered it I'm gettin a Metroid Prime Hunter T-Shirt. :) MP on the GameCube is one of my favorite games, just bought the new one, but haven't got around to playing single player yet. Definately buying MP Hunter for the DS. :)

Arr. The Minish Cap be a good game. They grabbed traits from Wind Waker and implemented them into this game. I just started playing, but it's definately the best tile based Zelda. :) I need to finish Link to the Past before I go any further though.
I don't really have the time to play games, so these types of games are great since they're simple adventures that aren't demanding on time.

I MIGHT consider a DS when the prices drop on 'em I just don't know.
I like the sound and screen quality, although I don't like how it doesn't play older GB games. That one thing is a bit of a speed bump for me, as I have a few older GB carts still.
Besides, I just got my SP how I like it! ;)
JackAxe
01-17-2005, 03:23 AM
It also doesn't work with GBA link games. So that's another consideration.
When I first heard about the DS, they mentioned it wouldn't even play GBA games, so I was set on buying a SP. But then they annouced it would, so since I have a GBA player on my GameCube I decided to hold off for the DS.
Definately hold off on one since you have a SP. When the PSP hits the US, Nintendo will be releasing quite a few games for the DS, so I'm wondering if Nintendo will also drop it's price. If anything maybe there will be a must have DS game. :)
I'm really happy with it and have a few friends that are going to buy one for the wi-fi thing. I'm almost finished with The Link to the Past, then it's off to The Minnish Cap, which so far is very impressive. I'm still very impressed with the screen. :)

Thanks!
Get one of the Special Editions if you can.
If not the NES, then the Fire Red. There are all kinds of customization kits out too.

Tis the two styles I like. If i could change the color on my DS, I would. I'm not a fan of it's color. It was another reason why I held off on the SP. I had a chance to buy the platinum GC also, but I went with black. :)
I'm off to figh Ganon monkey or whatever his name is. I have max bombs, arrows and hearts, so all is good. :) Only one more item to get an it's in his dungeon. Walkthroughs are great. I use them often so I can keep the game moving.

Good ol' PDA panache is at it again, with what looks like a really nice upgrade stylus for the Nintendo DS. (http://www.pdapanache.com/products.asp?PID=NINDS&S=3)
I've owned several different upgrade styli from PDA Panache and they all outlived the PDA's they were bought for.
Great stuff, very high quality.

Nice. :) That's half the price of a game. :D
Slashdot has a post about Nintendo licening the PALM OS. So I guess the DS will be another PALM. The first thing my wife asked me, is that another PDA and I said no. I'll just need to wait to see what pans out.

I just bought Final Fantasy Dawn Of Souls. I think you would like it, jack. FF1 is pretty engaging (FF2 is nothing to write home about with the bizzare level-up system).

Wow. That actually makes the DS a little bit more appealing. They do make really nice stylii. I've been without one ever since Sony moved to the collapsible stylus and PDA Panache decided not to make one. :(

I never played FF1 or 2, but did watch my friend play FF3 all the way through when I worked in tech support many moons ago. I'll put it on my list for games to play.
I'm really digging the Minish Cap. The game is very well done and has actually stumped me a few times now, none of the other Zelda games have done this to me. :) It's worth playing after the FF series.
One of my friends just picked up a DS this week. He wasn't going to do it until later since he has a SP, but after seeing the screen and feeling that the controls were easier to hold then the SP, he made the jump.

Oh, in case you didnt see recently, the DS is now going online just like the PSP.
Sweet deal.
The first game to use the online functions will be "Animal Crossing DS" and there was a delay in Metroid Prime : Hunters - which a lot of people think was for Internet play.
SWEEETTTTTTT!!! DS is going to be THE system for FPS's IMO- i dont usually like FPS's but, the way you controll in MP:FH is insane! i love it!
The PSP doesnt have two analogs so im pretty sure that it will be hard to do FPS's on, but ill wait for Coded Arms to see.

Sorry, but:
How crazy does the "keyboard" of the SP look?
I have nothing against flashy green handhelds with bkack keys and an antenna, but a foil covered keyboard-and the image...
Did you glue that on there yourself or was it on?

Have you played Animal Crossing on the DS? I watched my friend play it on the GC and thought about getting it.
I agree on the FPS thing, I really hope that it takes hold on the DS. FPS games to me are only fun with multiplayer and from just playing my friend once with Metroid, it was a blast on the DS. I definately want that game when it's released.
But give me more RPGEEEEES!!! :) The DS is soooo perfect for these games.

Unfortunatly, i have not played the DS version, as it isnt out yet... Later this year as i understand it. But, since the DS's lineup was rushed, ill wait for a quality online game.
Yes, RPG's and FPS's would RULE.
Even a RTS would probably work well... Think about it, if the N64 could play StarCraft:BroodWar, whats stopping the DS from tons of great RTS's?
I can easily forsee a PC MMORPG port for the DS with the addition of online to what it can do... But we will have to wait and see!

Yeah, the games do seem rushed. If not for the GBA's The Minish Cap, I wouldn't of bought a DS at this time. I'm thinking about buying another game now, but a bit hesitant to see what becomse available during the PSP release.

I just bought Ridge Racer. It's no GT, but for an arcade racer is just as much fun as I remembered it on the PS1. It just looks allot better and the steering with the stylus is starting to grow on me. It was hard at first, but now that I'm more used to it, I'm finding it very easy and natural to work with. Recovering from spin outs is much easier then doing so with a thumb.

I bought Urban Asphault GT, and i wasnt that happy with some of the games physics, its hard to steer, ect, but the licensed cars are really sweet to race (My Ford GT kicks major @ss!)
Saving for the Gallardo.
JackAxe
03-17-2005, 08:07 PM
I've only seen the demo on that game, wasn't sure about it.
Ridge Racer is the same as it's alwasy been for controls, so if you've played it on other sytems, the only thing new is the screen steering.
I would like to make a little tiny steering wheel that sits on my DS screen and is spring loaded. It would move a little nib right or left and snap back to the middle if I let go. Not sure how I would do this, but I thought it would be cool for RR.
I find myself going cross eyed while playing RR, is this normal? :)

Madden 2005 also looks awesome;

Oh and they're porting the original N64 Golden Eye, which IMHO is absolutely the best one period. All the others, no matter which console sucked. :) Oooooh please use the screen for aiming like Metroid. :)

Same here, I haven't purchased a sports game since Arnold Palmer Golf on the Genisis. But I did love Cyber Ball and the touch controls really make Madden look intresting to me.
I'm realy diggin Ridge Racer. Just started to master the power slide. :)
I read that Golden Eye will suport up to 16 peeps over wi-fi. I hope that's not a rumor :) It was the only one I finished. I tried all the others with great expectations, but they were so poorly made, I couldn't even stand to play them for a long period of time. Rare really knows their stuff I guess.

Nintendo said they will be licensing Palm OS to put on a future DS cart. Keep in mind that the GBA cart slot can be used for a DS-only cart. The reason for this is that there are extra address lines in the cart's interface that are unused. The GBA cart is just the right size for a mini-USB port to fit on the outside, so a Palm OS GBA form factor (but only for DS) cart is possible.

Oh, never playedd it though. :)
Speaking of FF series, I'm going to pick up FF3 if it uses the second screen, but not if it's just a re-re-re-re-release of Super NES version. My friends all consider that and FF7 their favorites. My personaly favorite console RPG is Phantasy Star 2.
Any ways, I'm going to buy which ever RPG is released first. :)

Xenosaga is a pretty long RPG series. Im pretty sure it started with Xenogears for the playstation, and then there was Xenosaga Episode 1 for PS2 as well as Episode 2. The games are really story line driven, and have awesome movies. There are parts of the game where you can go for 20 minutes watching the story unfold and not press a single button. I guess you either like it or you dont, but i love it. And when you are playing the game, not watching, the gameplay is pretty good. If you have a PS2 i do recommend Xenosaga episode 1/2 (I never played Xenogears, and i wasnt lost at all) I cant wait for the DS version!

20 minute movies. Is it better then the horrid Final Fantasy movies. Square Enix no longer makes games, they make sappy androgynous cheeseball animes.
I like gameplay though, so I'll check it out and the DS's 256 meg cart will prevent them from inserting entire CG anime. :)

Im pretty sure a good company could compress the CG and i dont think we are talking about the amazing graphics that came from the PS2.

The DS, at the 256x192 resolution of it's LCD, could do PS2-quality graphics if it was only on one screen. The initial games really downplay the hardware's power.
JackAxe
03-23-2005, 03:53 PM
Most of the initial games are kind of gimicy, not to say they aren't fun. :)
I bet you that if someone did need more storage for CG flics, they could include a GBA cart like the ones that holds a Gig or accepts SD cards and the DS could access it during the game. If that makes any sense?
Regardless, I'm hoping that Nintendos PALM OS will have access to the SD/GBA cart.
Jus to ramble like usual: Tiger Woods PGA Tour is a perfect example of how a PSP and DS vary and it really sums up their key difference. If you watch the PSP promo video on EA's site, it's all about purdy CG shots and not really about gameplay. If you then watch the DS promo, it completely emphasizes gameplay and also has the art tidbit.

You could look at the screenshots also. But note that the DS's screen have been scaled down and the PSP's screens are scaled up. So the sizes are not correct.

Maybe the Palm OS cart will include a SD slot. I'm pretty certain that it will be on a GBA form factor cart for it to have a Mini-USB port.

Yep, If they didn't have a USB port, then they could only rely on Wi-fi which most peep don't have.
THey have GBA carts with USB ports right now. They're for "rom" transfering though. :)

Zach, its interesting you say that, as the device the DS uses to play Movies and Music uses a SD card that you insert into a GBA cartridge. Very cool, called "Play Yan" you can get it here, and it works too (from what i have heard, anyway) IGN tested it, and loved it. BTW, with Play Yan, there is also a small mini game you can store on the card each week, and they are free. Pretty cool.

I bought the Urbz this weekend and now I know why the Sims has been so popular. This game is like some form of digital crack. I have trouble putting it down and actually killed my DSs battery the first couple of days.
It uses the touch screen for all the options and some of the mini games. So it's really easy to manage your sim and talk to other peeps to build your rep.
Anyways, this game is lots of fun for being so simple. I've been contemplating getting it for my PC now, but then I'll probably never get any work done, so that would probably be a bad idea.

I'm getting a Treo650 (2 of them next week, one for me, one for the laty.) so a PSP is now completely out of the question for me. Plus it will fill my want for a portable video player that doesn't use memory sticks.
My friend digs Untold Monkeys, the game is a good time killer. He has a DS also and likes Retro Arcade. I was thinking about getting that, but will get those games for the Treo instead.

Yeah, i am in a mini PSP blitz... I have only bought two games for it since last thursdays release, so i dont think that i am doing too badly. I tested it on a road trip to New York today (hey, wanna buy a tshirt cheap?) and i must say that
A. I didnt want people to see me in public with it- i had a fear of it being stolen, and thats not cool... I didnt like the feeling at all... I felt much more comfortable with my DS or Zodiac in the past...
B. The battery did hold up nicely, but i had no sound on the entire time. I played for around 3 hours.
C. The entire time i walked around the car show, i feared for the smallest bump against ANYTHING because the unit just feels so fragile. I have owned much more expensive Clie's and i didnt even worry this much for those... Its not really a good device at all for anyone who doesnt want to worry all the time...

If you watch that video of the peeps destroing the PSP, it takes quite a pounding before breaking. It's just because it's so dang purdy and the screen covers such a large area that you're probably paranoid. :)
I think once you get a hardcover case you'll feel more comfortable, or at least some type of screen cover. The DS has a sturdy plastic case and my Clié is a clamshell, but I have yet to drop either.
I'm getting this for the Treos as protection;
http://store.treocentral.com/content/accessories/4-23--182.htm
And yes finally no memory sticks.:D Freak I almost talked myself into buying a Sony Ericsson S710a, but one of the things I notice, is that is used non MS-Pro sticks. That's the last thing I want for a "time buying video" player. I can get a 1Gig SD for $73. Anyways, with Kinoma I can play MP4 with AAC and the phone records H.263 natively with it's camera. So I'll be buying more DVDs of my favorite cartoons to rip. :)

All game titles being equal and playing units being equal, can someone identify the $ per hour that you spend on each of the two game units? Which has the better value?
JackAxe
04-03-2005, 06:50 PM
This whole thing is too subjective. :) If you like PS2 type games, or the games that are exclusive to that sytem like GT then a DS will never be worth your time. But if you like GBA games, or any type of games you can pick up and put down, games that are exclusive to Nintendo, then the PSP is not worth it.
Neither system can be broken down by cost if they don't meet your needs. I've seen article that were biased towards one or the other system and in doing so, they alwasy failed to point out important features of the other system and would "always" sell it short with their "narrowed" views.
My choice is the DS of course for a better value, but if you ask Homie S, his would be the PSP.
It all comes down to what you like, which brings up this question; What are your favorite (type of) games?
I have more questions and will point out why I think a DS is a better value, but as mentioned already it's all toooo subjective.

I bought the DS to play games like Zelda and RPGs. I like games that keep me occupied, but I can easily save and then pick up later on. The touch screen has been great. It combined with the joypad and buttons has been everything my PDAs were missing. Where the DS is lacking in screen, it more then makes up for it with the second screen and touch response. Puzzles, RTS, FPS and RGPs in general can be executed better on a DS.

My friend just bought a PSP, and I played with it. I think it's a fairly nice device, but not quite ready for prime time.
I found that the analogue stick was almost never used, and when it was used it was hard to hold the PSP like that. Actually, the PSP doesn't fit into the hand like a game boy does. You want to hold it in a position where you can't use the trigger buttons because it feels so wide.
And the smudges. Ohhhhh, the smudges! I spent a good 10 minutes with a cleaning cloth getting all the smudges off. If you touch it with even the cleanest of fingers, a huge fingerprint appears. If you wipe it off with anything but an optical cleaning cloth, it smudges into a giant BLOB. Imagine an iPod, except that it's black. Now imagine it about 3 times worse. That's a fair representation of how smudgey it gets.
The UMD is pleasantly very unobtrusive. The mechanism looks like a relative of the Minidisk, and therefore a web of exposed metal and lenses that look entirely too fragile when open. I can, however, forsee a market of about 10 people for UMD movies. The format just won't work well for that because of durability.
The battery is, however, fairly easy to remove. The buttons are also nice, they are clear!
JackAxe
04-05-2005, 05:47 PM
The ejecting mechnisim felt nice and solid. I wasn't expecting that after seeing footage of the UMD discs flying out during play. If I could play my own rippped H.264 vids through the memory stick full screen, I would be a future PSP owner. All the potential of this unit looked great. But I don't own, nor really like GTA(Mindless 3D fluff.), so I really have no reason to get a PSP.
I saw an interview this morning with one of the Metroid peeps and he talked about how the DS's touch screen enables "mouse accuracy" and that it was the best portable unit for FPSs. Everything we learned on our own. :)
The only thing I would change on my DS, is its color.

Whereas the PSP automatically has street cred, the DS has the image of a flimsy toy.
At Walmart, the Nintendo demo units seemed devoted to children. Nothing that I know about the DS indicates adult usage except a few teen-oriented titles. In the bottom line, with a Nintendo DS, I'm not sure I want to brave the adult cafe milleau.
Perhaps Nintendo marketing people might develop street cred for the Nintendo DS.
zackepceo
04-05-2005, 11:42 PM
Nintendo seems very, very reluctant to encorage game makers develop games oriented more towards adults. They have already said that they planned to target the DS at an older audience. Perhaps that will play out as the year unfolds and online play becomes an option.
teralens
04-06-2005, 01:48 AM
In my opinion, Nintendo did a decent job before PSP. I didn't want a Nintendo portable 'til the PSP came along. In the DS, maybe we're seeing the start of a new paradigm with the Wi-fi aspects of portable gaming.
JackAxe
04-06-2005, 02:28 AM
I would't call a DS flimsy by any means. Nintendo's portable are alwasy sturdy and can take a beating. Afterall, they are kid tested. :) It wouldn't bother me if I dropped my DS, but if I dropped a PSP I would probably have a minor heart-attack.
I think their target is primarily adults that grew up on Nintendo games and still play them; like me. :o I wouldn't percieve Tiger Woods or NFL as kids games. Most of the DS games generally cover all ages. But there are the exceptions, like Pokemon. blah. Nintendo's main staple is characters like Mario, so even if and when they "do" produce adult games, ignorance (street cred) dictates that it's not available. If you want one of the best games right now, (Not talking about racing, so leave GT4 out of this. :) ) that is primarily for adults, then last I checked it was only available for the Nintendo GameCube and that's RE4. It's coming out for the PS2, but the graphics will be dumbed down and the game will suffer from sloooow load times.
I really like the games I currently own, but I would've liked to have seen a good RPG at launch. My friend (The one that manages serveral game stores.) said that Nintendo would release tons of game right when the PSP came out, but that didn't happen. Blah...
There is the prospect of dozens of games currently in development, so it's only a matter of waiting. I guess June will be the month for the DS with Golden Eye and I think Shogun Warrior (http://www.insidegamer.nl/content.php?id=5548) will also be released. Between the 2 portables, I'm definately sticking it with Nintendo since they have the most promising system for the games I enjoy. But if I ever want a purdy portable that's better for racing games as an example, then I'll make room for a PSP. But never would I replace my DS with one.
Nintendo has already done one thing right for adults and that's better spacing on the DS's controls. The truly backlit screen was also a great bonus, since GBA games look amazing on it. And no load times is a major plus in my book.
Here's the kind of street cred the PSP has. (http://www.boomspeed.com/allhailme/040405_paristoys.jpg) I doubt that she'll ever carry around a jewel-encrusted DS.
<]=)
zackepceo

The DS also has no load times. The amount of time it took for his PSP to start up ranged from instant to ~5 seconds, and 10 seconds for loading from the disk (as well as a previously unmentioned 4 or 5 second wait for the MS data to be read for a saved game) is irritating.
JackAxe
04-06-2005, 06:00 PM

Costco sells the DS bundled with various games like Mario. None of the titles really interests me as I have eyes only for Urbz.
On the Nintendo DS, Walmart appears to have some of the best prices at ~$150 plus tax.
On the topic of Nintendo selling points, elsewhere in the Internet, I read that a lady could transmute her GameCube Sims characters. She could zap them from her GC into her Nintendo Advance. She liked to take her Sims with her for her waiting time in the Doctor's office.

Have you played Animal Crossing? If not, it's another game kind of like Sims where you manage your character and build up their place of living by befriending the local peeps. It's on the GameCube right now and will be coming out for the DS shortly.
http://media.ds.ign.com/media/682/682878/imgs_1.html
The one draw back with a DS, is that it can not link with the GC. I'm hoping Nintendo will offer a solution, since I do have a few games that take advantage of it and would rather use my DS then my GBA, because of its nicer screen and easier to hold controls. Apparently the DS was designed to link with Nintendo's next gen machine the Revolution. This is what my friend has been telling me.

I bought Rayman DS, but so far I'm just "eh" with it. This is a game that would definately be way better on a PSP. I'm going to give it a chance though, I'm just hoping the fact I'm having trouble collecting these bubbles for breathing under water is just me and not because the game has terrible collision-detection. The game is also very pixelated compared to the other 3D games I have on the DS, so I know they could've done better. They seemed to have cut corners on this just to get it out. For example they let me use the touch screen to move Rayman, but they don't really use it as an option selection screen. Plus they allow me to make my screen controler bigger, but instead of providing a clean image at the bigger size, the simply scale it up using hardware, which looks like crap.
I would've rather seen this game be released as the classic Playstation side-scroller for the DS. I love old school games, so I hope cheeseball 3D ports don't become the norm for my DS.
Something that's annoying me about the first batch of DS games, is that they sometimes cop out and don't use the touch screen for all areas that it would be very usefull. They alwasy go about half way. It seems that most developer are "quite" lazy now days, especially since everything is a rehashed port. I look forward to "original" DS titles that really take advantage of its potential.
If this Rayman DS game doesn't pan out, then I'll just regret the fact I could've bought the Yoshi DS game. Anyways it was only $26, so not bad.

I picked up Star Wars Episode 3 DS earlier today and it's a blast. It's in the flavor of the old arcade games like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, or Final Fight, but much much better. The new E-Laced Zelda will be owning everything in its path later this year.
Guess what Link can do.
Thats right. Change into a wolf. This new game promises to be the darkest yet most beautiful entry in the series to date.

Which bring us to the point, what's the use of a nice PSP if there's no games you want for it?
JackAxe

My friend made that same exact commen, about all of the games sucking on his PSP. Guess what his favorite game is right now, Episode 3 on the DS. He's one of the peeps that pointed it out to me. :)
Speaking of which. I didn't see a single PSP at the theater last night, but I saw at least 20 DSs.
The PSP has looks and seems sturdy, but tell this to all the peeps that actually had one break in their hands while playing it. In reality the DS is a much sturdier unit and I wouldn't be afraid to give it to my 4 year old nephew to play.
And something I really apreciate abou the DS now, besides its extra long battery life and lots of "fun" games, is that the games are sooooooo tiny. I had 4 games in my pocket and I couldn't feel that they were there. I really wouldn't want to carry around 4 UMDs in my pocket, that would be quite annoying.

Bah, they both suck. My TH55 beats them allllll!!!! :p
Mmm, y'know, if they took a GP32, put it on PSP hardware and put a DS-style touchscreen flip panel somewhere, that'd be one sweet handheld.
I was really tempted to get a GP32 (It's really cool handheld system - emulates almost every oldsk00l console in existance. Portable ChronoTrigger and Sonic! :D) but it's really f'ing bulky.

I remeber that thing. I can also do something similar with my DS and a GBA Flash or SD cart. :p Their are SNES emulators for the GBA in the works, a NES emulator and even Sega emulator.
http://www.pocketsnes.net/download_pocketsnes.htm
http://www.gameboy-advance.net/emulated/snes_roms_on_gba.htm
http://www.zophar.net/consoles/gameboy.html
And of course I can already play GBA games. :D
Your TH55 has blah controls and blah games. :p Tis why you bought a PSP and why I bought a DS. I wish the Palm had the same calibre of controls and games though and some day I hope it will. :)
Anyways, just by a Black GBA micro to go along with your PSP and you'll have access to all the old school kick arse games. :) But also buy a DS so that you can play with peeps like me at the movie theater and of course for all the kick arse strategy, RPG and FPS games coming out.
And I'll pick up a PSP when the price drops.

Finally played YTAG today from my Bro's DS (Cause he wouldnt let me have the cartridge haha!) Great game - IF you like the touch screen. It uses ONLY the touchscreen - and theres no real story line, but its fun as hell, and fast paced!
I recommend it if you like arcadish styled games, or like addicting / quick challenge games. The graphics are kinda cool, they remind me of Yoshis Island for the SNES... Obviously, no NintenDogs, but its fun, and cheery.
Supports download play too. Download play mode only has one option, (As i got him to play it with me after a while) but, its fun. We only made the goal once, out of 35 games played.

The controls are perfect, and everything looks great, not PSP great, but N64 great. It's not the original GoldenEye that I was hoping would be released, but is way better then any of its bigger console brother variations, because of its superior controls.

Are you playing multi play with 2 carts? I only played with one cart, so I was limited to that single texture wako map.
But overall, I'm having a blast with the game. Single player is up there with all other FPS games I've played, nothing new, but fun. If it weren't for the controls and multi-play, this is not a game I would've bought. But those two elements make it worth every penny.
Unless developers just haven't figured out all the tricks, I'm pretty sure this is the extent of what 3D will look like on a DS. But I'm fine with that, a portable N64 is welcome in my book.

Planning on picking up a Nintendo DS tomorrow... Got a couple of quick questions for the experts:
How does the battery hold up (hours of play)?
Are there any ways to browse the web with it's Wi-Fi? I remember reading somewhere that the PSP could do so through a certain game's built-in browser.
What are the best DS games?
Is there truth to the rumors of Nintendo licensing the Palm OS for the DS?
zackepceo
07-31-2005, 11:59 PM
The battery lasts about 10 hours for DS games, and more for GBA games.
It's true that Nintendo wanted to license Palm OS, and if that works out, a web browser would certainly be possible. As it is, there is no DS web browser, though.
The games I like are Nanostray, Meteos, Wario Ware Touched, and Electroplankton.

Awesome. Loads of fun to be had with a DS. :)
I play my DS off and on each day, and its charge lasts well over a week. Its battery held up for my recent 2 week vacation, including the 2 flights. I've been very happy with it and haven't been paranoid about the battery going dead when I'm out all day.
I've heard great things about Kirby, and all my DS games have been quite fun in general. I really like Golden Eye, but only because of its multiplayer option and more importantly the DS's controls. This game would suck on any console or other portable. But my favorite game right now is Fire Emblem, which is a GBA game. Just another perk about owning a DS. :)

Nintendo DS Wi-Fi Hits Theaters
Get an exclusive look at Nintendo's trailer hitting movie screens this weekend.
by Craig Harris
July 29, 2005 - Nintendo will launch a multi-million dollar campaign kicking off the company's focus on taking the Nintendo DS online with a film-style teaser trailer hitting movie theaters this weekend.
The theatre-only advertisement, titled "The Sad, Agonizing Tale of Bhuvan Ganguly," is a minute-long mini-movie that teases viewers with the idea of affecting people anywhere in the world from anywhere in the world. The film has been created and produced by Nintendo's longtime advertising firm Leo Burnett.
"The Sad, Agonizing Tale of Bhuvan Ganguly" will be spotlighted in more than 5,000 theaters in the US starting July 29th through August 25th, and will be shown before such films as The Fantastic Four, The Dukes of Hazzard, Bad News Bears, Stealth, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and The Island.
"There is a great element of surprise to this ad," says Nintendo's advertising manager Kelli Koenig. "The spot opens on a very dramatic situation that you just wouldn't expect to be related to video games or Nintendo. The spot clearly demonstrates Wi-Fi as it relates to the Nintendo brand with a nod to Mario Kart DS and it does this in a magical, clearly 'ownable ' by Nintendo kind of way."
Instead of ruining the film's "surprise" in text, we'll just let you watch it for yourself. Hit the movie link below to watch "The Sad, Agonizing Tale of Bhuvan Ganguly" in its entirety.

Yeah, thats what Sony's IDEA was. Too bad it didn't work.
I have even started to see members of the PSP comunity reject both the PSP and the DS because they told everyone how much the "DS sucks" so they cant go back to the DS, but the PSP didnt even come close to the expectations they had for it. It's sad really, and it makes me wonder if more and more people start to reject the units, maybe Nintendo will again be the sole handheld king.

I guess those peeps will just end up with GBA micro, if they're to good for a DS. :) I guess that the next will tell for Sony. They definately have a market, but at the current rate, Nintendo's dominance isn't threatened, especially with something like 130 million GBA owners. My friend (Gamestore manager dude.) says the DS is selling better( Current sales are slow for bogth though.) than the PSP, and that there are quite a few kids with them now.

Same here, I was hoping it would've been longer. But I had a blast with it. Capcom made that Zelda, so hopefully they release another one. I still play the game once and a while just to collect those annoying figurines. I have agbout about 30 to go, so about 500 billion seashells to collect. I'm trying to get the very last heart container, which is only accessible after beating the game. I got the Mirror Shield after beating it.
I've been thinking about playing "Link to the Past" again. That game was tough towards the end, and I really liked all the armor upgrades. I would love to see a new Minish with all the character it has, but with more items like link.

08-05-2005, 09:52 PM
The final items of the game sort of disapointed me, like the Cape and the Fire, I guess because those had always been some of the first items you get in the Zelda series... They were still cool to see and use again, because they were changed. The absence of a magic meter kinda ticked me off, but then again, I didnt want another Link to the Past clone. I didn't find the Miror shield, and I will look again, but if I cant find it, you have to help me =P
The Light arrows kicked as always.
JackAxe
08-06-2005, 05:13 AM
I felt the same way about the items. To be honest though, after the nightmares I had with LinkPast and the magic meter, it was kind of a relief. I noticed that all the Zelda games shuffle up the items and their importance. I really like the remote control bombs though. And the new boomerang was nice.
In order to get the Mirror Shield, you have to save the game after beating it. It brings up the option to save after the credits if I recall. Then you have to go to the huge Rock Goro at the top of the mountain and make him happy, then he'll ask if he can suck and chew on your shield. Then after about 20 minutes when you go back to him, he'll spit out the mirror shield. :) I used an on-line walkthrough, or I would've never figure it out. :)

Don't need 80gigs for old Nintendo games. Most of this old games, even the ones that advertized as having more Mbits, were only a few hundred Kilobytes. :)
They sell a kit that includes a DS and GBA 1Gig flash cart and dumper for about $235. The 512 with both types of carts, is about $164. It's about $60 for the GBA carts that can accept either a CF, or SD card.

<]=)
Actually, I knew they were quite small, as I have most of those legal ROMs on my PC already. I only said 80GB because you wrote GC :) :p
But, there was a new flash card that apparently runs DS ROMs GBA ROMs / (all older emulation?) Music and Video files. The card is shown using both screens, check it out! http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000883053536/

Thief! :D :p I meant Gameboy Color, but like a tard I didn't write GBC, my bad. :o
Sweeeet. I want one!!! :) I noticed that the DS boxes have a slot for both GBA and DS carts, so Nintendo must have been planing on using the GBA for storage and expansion for DS apps.

Anyway, asking seriously, I own the cartridges of all the ROMs I own, so arent they legal for me to posses? Whats the law on that?

It's illegal to have any kind of ROM or a cop of a game, actually. It says that in the back of the manual for the games. Nintendo doesn't pursue persecution of people who play ROMs, but it's a legal grey area that wouldn't be hard to be busted in.

Its illegal just as much as it is to have music downloaded off of the internet. The reason that they cant currently prosecute is that they cant actually be sure that you dont own a license for either the ROM or the music, as it is perfectly legal to own a digital copy of something you already own. It is however, illegal to upload the files, which is why they prosecute those people. Thank goodness for fair use.

Speaking of roms. I'm curious about how much Nintendo will charge for their download service for the Revolution? I'm hoping that I can download a game, then either play it on my Revolution, or somehow move it to my DS for portable play.

True!
Nintendo stands to make a lot off legally doing ROMs, something I've been waiting for for a while. If titles are reasonably priced, Nintendo will make a killing. BUT, if they cant get access to some games, people will slowly reject the idea (word of mouth that the service "sucks" spreads quickly) so I want the entire game collection available to me day one. Also, my dad knows french, and likes certain games, I wonder if they will offer different languages?
JackAxe
08-10-2005, 10:00 PM
Same here, I wouldn't want limited access.
Didn't think about the language thing, I suppose that each unit sold might have a regional chip, or when registering, it would ask for your location, then from there determine what you can buy. I can't imagine them not allowing the purchase of any language though.

When the black DS comes out, I might be giving my DS to a friend and picking one up.

Yeah, but not on launch day... (At least to the best of my knowledge...)
Anyway, it's cool if I am wrong, just Nintendo has a habit of releasing LOTS of colors by the end of a devices life...
Speaking of that, Micro will undoubtly have the most options with that face plate changin thingy...

Grrr... Enough with the DS wordplay!
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
Lunar: Dragon Dong
Advance Wars: Dual Strike
Dig Dug: Digging Strike
Fullmetal Alchemist: Dual Sympathy
Guilty Gear Dust Strikers
Resident Evil: Deadly Silence
Ezikial Anta
08-24-2005, 04:52 PM
Wow! A Resident Evil for DS!? AMAZING! It must be my lucky day!
Lunar looks REALLY sweet too!
AW : DS looks... great, but, I am not really into the turn based strategy, more like the real time, though untill Blizzard starts shipping Starcraft, I will get my fix with this game... FMA game? Coo'.
Castlevania is getting a bit overused, IMO, but I am sure the game will be good none-the-less.
I also want two games you didnt include, Diablo(2?) from Blizzard and Mario Kart from (duh) Nintendo.

My GameCube is all black, including the 4 controlers, GameBoy player, and useless broadband adapter. :)
Yeah, this word play is getting corny. Advanced Wars and Metroid Prime Hunters are the 2 games I want the most. I'm getting Nintendogs tonight.
I would like a great RPG though, something like Phantasy Star 2.

I've only played Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II on my GCN and I thought it was okay, IMO. I traded it in at EB and I kinda miss it a little. LOL I remember I wasted $8 a month for the online part which I never used. I was thinking of getting it for my Xbox now that I have an Xbox Live subscription. I would love to see Phantasy Star on a DS, and it would be awesome if it had an online component.

JackAxe
08-25-2005, 02:40 PM
I beat number 1 also. Number 2 was one of the best RPG games of that type. I couldn't get into any of the Final Fantasy or DragonQuest games after playing it, not even Zelda. It was on its own level. But years later, I want to play them all. :)
I finished 3 and 4 also, but 2 was a definitely the best.

Give it a try now. Don't wait, it's such a great game. I replayed it several times, and even built up my main character until he could cast this nasty spell called "Megid" 3 times. It was the most powerful spell in the entire game.

Yep, I'll play. I recall them saying they delayed it for that feature alone, so well worth the wait. :)
Nintendo is calling Gueist the thinking mans FPS. It has some minor FPS moments, but the bulk of the game is puzzel thinking. Your sol is ripped from your body and the whole game is figuring out how to get back from what I understand.

Metroid Pinball Rumbles
The upcoming DS title will include a rumble pack.
by Craig Harris
August 22, 2005 - Nintendo of America revealed today that, when Metroid Prime Pinball ships on October 24th, the game will include a DS Rumble Pak accessory that plugs directly into the GBA slot of the Nintendo DS system.
With the Rumble Pack installed, the Nintendo DS will offer user feedback so that players can feel bumps and nudges as the ball ricochets on the screen. No word on if past game have and future games will incorporate support for the rumble pack.
We'll have more details on Metroid Prime Pinball and its Rumble Pack as they're made available.

The unit has much potential. Besides Rayman I've been overall very happy with the graphics. It's pretty much what I expected from a portable. I'm personally a big fan of old school games, so I'm looking forward to games like Four Swords for DS. That game should look awesome, since the Minish Cap loooks soooo great. The new Mario Luigi game from what I've seen also looks amazing.

I guess I'll be getting NintendoPower for free, since I pre-ordered Zelda.
I needs to read more, but from tne screen shots this game looks like a graphic adventure, which are my favorite type of games. There seems to be a few of these coming out for the DS, so I'm quite happy with the future line up of titles.
