View Full Version : Did you remove the sticker by the hardbuttons?

On my NX70 there is a silver sticker surrounding the hard buttons for datebook, to do, etc. Have any of you taking this sticker off? The reason I ask is because I find it annoying and useless, but I don't know if it is there for a purpose.

Someone brought up a good point about that sticker. It provides protection for the case. If you close the screen and twist it at the same time, the corner will scratch the body of the Clie right where that sticker is. The sticker will just slide instead of leaving keep scratches as the metal would. If you decide to take it off I'd be interested in pictures of how cleanly you could get the adheasive off, and how it looks without it.

When I read the original post, I kept thinking "I am sure Sony put that there for a good reason... I mean why add additional expense on the final parts bill for no good reason?"
And OcellNuri answered the question... thank you!

I took off ALL the stickers before it sat in the charger the first time. I stuck them into the inside of the box & put it away. That way (G-d forbid) if I have to return it, then I've got "EVERYTHING" that came with it.
I know. SILLY.
I AM very careful NOT to do the twist-scratching, though.

You removed the silver sitcker by the hard buttons? I tried to pry and edge up there was quite a bit of adhesive under there. How cleanly did it come off and did you have to use anything like GooGone? Can you get a picture of it?

It annoyed me in the beginning when I first got the NR70, and now the NX70 but, it no longer bothered me once I knew why it was there.

Heh, thanks for the explanation, OcellNuri. It makes perfect sense to me now. Although I still want to get rid of it...
BTW, while we are on the topic of getting the case of our NRs/NXs scratched, have any of you had problems with the case scratching itself while it's closed? It seems that while it's in the closed position, the edges rub together on the sides close to the screen. Look at the picture to see what I'm saying. If I take some normal scotch tape and press on the blob that the scratch makes, I can remove it. But it will reappear in a few days. Basically, I'm thinking of just putting a tiny piece of tape where it's getting scratched to prevent the problem. Any of you experiencing this?

The picture is not too bad... phillipv.
Yeah, I have the same marks... I try to ignore them...
On the note about the sticker... I'd remove it early and
not later... Why? Discoloration.
Have you tried to remove a sticker from a TV or VCR or
microwave years later? You notice how color on the
exposed parts is lighter than the place underneath the
sticker...
If you're not going to remove it early, then don't remove
it at all.....

I have the same marks on my NX, didn't notice them until today, though !
As for the sticker, I had noticed it, but since it's there for a purpose, I wouldn't dream about removing it...

I just did it! I read this thread and I couldn't resist.
Removing it was really easy. There's a thick layer of adhesive plastic, but you just roll it and peel it off. Then a soft moistened cloth removes all rests and dust acumulated in the border of the sticker. It is just as clean as new.
Below the sticker is a small hole, too small for the reset pin on the stylus, and I don't know what it is. But, apart from that, it is much easier to press the buttons now, I can feel them in my fingers! plus, I like it better this way.
Here's a picture for those who want to see it:

Dual purpose sticker. Protect from scratches and to hide the HOLE. ;D
Now, someone will have to dismantle their unit and find out why the hole is there.

Hmm, I thought for sure under the sticker was a message from sony saying "Ha! No CF drivers for you!" but maybe if you insert a needle in the hole with the clie on, the message will appear on screen. :D
Anyways nice work, huggy. I'm going to take the plunge today and remove the sticker. I'll tell you my results later.

Pertaining to the removal of the sticker surrounding the hard buttons, I successfully removed it on my NR70 (thanks to this thread) and found no hole as mentioned above. What was it added for on the NX?

That (almost) proves my theory correct! The NR doesn't have a CF slot, but the NX does! Hence only the NX would have the hole to access the secret message!

I have a gunmetal, and I will not dot it!
However perhaps the hole is to switch on the second bank of 16meg memory?
or
It is the master disassembly point, stick a pin in and Boing the whole Clie falls into pieces !!!!

what happens if you use a pin while the device is on and the screen blinked and faded to black.... and smoke started to come out... and so you call sony for help and they say... you @%@^ thats why the sticker is there for! so that you wont set the self destruct.. you have 1 min till it explodes! hahaha LOL!

it was really easy to remove i took mine off as soon as i got it. The NR actually has the same sticker and i removed it too i dont like the fact that a sticker is "protecting" my clie. really how much protection can it give? anyway i took that sticker off and added a few of my own. I like my colorful stickers for style...not for "protection"

Hoping this works.
I took the sticker off my NX, it's a gunmetal, and it doesn't have a hole but it does have a dimple on the right side. Other then that she's good now.
Take a look:
C:\WINDOWS\Desktop\sticker.htm
Phalanx

Well, I took off my sticker..the hard buttons look better now somehow. But I do have a hole/dimple on the right side. Upon looking at it closely with a flashlight, I noticed that it's a screw hole. It's very tiny, but the ridges are there that are apparent in screw holes. Wonder what Sony was thinking?
ShellyBelly
01-19-2003, 07:47 PM
Mine is no screw hole, no matter how closely I look at it. In fact it is the very barest of dimples!
But I guess you have a silver?? It seems the gunmetal is different under the sticker.
Phalanx
01-19-2003, 07:47 PM
Oh, and if you take a look at the body specifications of the NX70 at http://leggnet.com/clie/NX70body.pdf you can see that there is no screw on the blueprints...

Haven't several people said they found a "hole" when they took off the sticker??? As most are silver, I would assume that is the difference with mine????

I didn't even notice it was a sticker until I read this thread.. I'm going to have to agree with the "love is blind" post.. I'm also going to have to agree with OcellNuri.. to remove or not to remove that is the question..

I had thought it was molded plastic and I was too afraid to damage the sticker if it wouldn't come off in the end-until I read about it here of course:)

Could this be something from manufacturing? Maybe they need to secure the case to mount the buttons? Or were there some NR's that were taken up into airplanes and imploded because the internal pressure could not be equalized with the cabin? ;)

That is exactly where the dimple is on my gunmetal...weird, maybe they just wanted the publicity and the spending it would create by having it become a big topic in a forum somewhere and now EVERYONE has to have one and take the sticker off to see for themselves!!!???:)

Think the removal of that sticker voids the warranty (and any third party insurance/replacement programs?) Doh!
ShellyBelly
01-20-2003, 10:10 AM
Sony isn't really big on upholding there end of the warranty anyway, support that is:(
I do actually have a few scratches on my NX and I just tried that Plexus stuff on them and it worked really great!!! They are MUCH less noticeable.
Of course it was the NX that got the scratches and not one of my older models:( But I've been putting it on all of them as it's supposed to protect them cover and I know that on my purple N610 the edges have lost most of the purple and the white underneath is showing through. I hoping this will keep that one and the others from wearing away the top colors!!!
Here it is at the best price I've found (it's a large bottle so you really only need one):

I have the exact same mark in the same area! Usually if I rub it hard it comes off, so I'm not sure what makes the mark.

Unfortunately, I rubbed the mark off again and this time it didn't come off! It appears that the scratch is surface deep and the true material that the NX is made of is showing. I thought the case was Magnesium? Did Sony just spray paint the top silver? The part underneath what looks like the paint job is greenish in color.

do you use the plexus for the whole clie (screen and body) or just one? and how often etc...
OcellNuri
01-20-2003, 03:55 PM
I know for sure that the case is magnesium. I've taken two NR's apart and holding the shells of the case you can tell it's most-deff not plastic. Very light and very strong... sounds like magnesium to me. As far as it being green, I can't explain that.

Hmmm, I didn't really think about this with my NR, I just ripped it off. It looks so much CLEANER now, very simple. I think a better solution would have been to use a translucent sticker, perhaps like the keyboard buttons... as for the 'hole'...
