I would like to instal a 2nd copy of Windows on my machine (ME) Is there a special way of instaling a 2nd version of windows, or should I just instal it as if my pc had no previous version of windows instaled?
I did a google search on this topic and could not find and good answers?
Please help

three ways....

1) buy a second disk, pull the old disk, install the new windows (neither windows knows the other exists) and use a very simple boot manager (gag) http://gag.sourceforge.net/ (gag only works on disk boots, you install from floppy to one of the two disks and then tell GAG the other disk is there and ready. This is difficult because you must have one disk per boot, and both OS's must be installed first.

2) partition a drive or buy another disk, but use a smarter disk manager (system commander commercial product, or http://www.osloader.com/ ), may have a larger learning curve to learn how to set up and control partitions and boots.

3) use windows built in boot manager. buy a second drive, do not format it. boot your new OS. tell it to install to the other drive. Requires that the 2nd OS be the more recent copy of windows.

I currently have XP instaled and would like to instal ME, so I guess choice 3 is out.

I used Boot Magic to install Windows 98 on my XP machine. It was very simple to do. Both OS's are on the same hard drive. You have to pay for this software so I'm not sure if that is what you're looking for, but it works great.

Edit - Just realized that I actually used Partition Magic, which came with Boot Magic. Still highly recommended. :)

yup, I would go with #2, I was just browsing on OSL2000 and they claim it is easier than ever (which wouldn't be difficult to top -- it was pretty hard to use this last spring, 8 months ago). I use GAG right now with XP home and XP 64. Though I haven't used the XP64 in a while, so I am in the process of removing it and reclaiming that disk.

googling brought up:
http://www.ranish.com/part/
http://www.techspot.com/download391.html
http://www.boot-us.com/functions.htm
http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/diskdirector/

and others.

I have used GAG, and as long as you have another disk, it works great and free.

Why would you need ME? Is your current disk NTFS? If it is then you would need to reformat it using the FAT system if you want it on the same disk or if you want ME to read it.

ME was by far the worst 32-bit windows. It was Windows 98 SE with My Pictures.

I only need ME to play some games that don't run under XP (ex. C&C Red Alert)

I don't know if this will help, but here's a link with instructions on how to get old games working wtih XP and they mention C&C Red Alert;

http://www.planetcnc.com/features/techtroopers/classicsInXP/

I've been able to get all my old games working with XP using it's compatibility feature.

Yes I have the patch, C&C Red Alert works on Xp, but C&C Red Alert Aftermath and Counterstrike don't, there is no patch for them, that is why I want to instal ME.

I would use 98SE over ME. I was thinking that it was going to be for games. I did it for CC RA as well. I did it on two separate drives.

there are many applications out there that you can install on your computer that allow you to have pretty much another computer running on your current computer. One of them, one that i've used, is VMWare. you can find it at www.vmware.com (http://www.vmware.com). it costs a little bit, but if you're really that desperate, it works like a charm.

This will delete all your data though...

1. make 2 partitions using fdisk
2. set one to active
install on both partitions
edit boot.ini (on the active partition, I believe the lines should be
C:\="Game Windows"
D:\="Work Windows"

You may want a whole different partition for data...but it's not that important for 9x OSs cuz you can reinstall without losing your data. I believe that's all that's truely necessary but I'm using LILO but it loads boot.ini

if you're going to spend upwords of $100, they make hardware drawers where you can pull the drives in and out...it turns the IDE into a SCSI-esque connection that's not hot swappable but is cool...
