SMS help

I am not certain I understand SMS. The problem is all of my email messages come over on SMS as well and they interupt me on the web or on the phone. I find it annoying....Is there any way to prevent regular email from coming on SMS?
Also what is SIM? Obviously I am new at this.....thanks in advance. darlene
