I'm sure this has been brought up before but I have just aquired a ux50 and was thinking of purchasing the Motorola V710 (verizon) so that I may surf wirelessly via bluetooth. But before I buy the phone, I have a few questions I was hoping you guys can answer for me. I have read that verizon has limited the bluetooth functionality in the V710 because of their agreement with GetItNow. To what extent I am unsure. I asked several representatives if it was possible to pair up the ux and phone to surf but they were unsure. I previously owned an NX70v and a V60i and purchased a data cable from thesupplynet. On a side note, I used WinHand (VPN Software) to connect to my main pc at home and would go online from there. It seemed so much faster due to compression rather than using netfront which took forever. Furthermore, the minutes I spent online would just be taken off my regular plan (not charged for data). But my question is, will I be able to pair up the ux50 and v710 and be able to do all of the above or has Verizon blocked it completely unless I sign up for a data usage plan?

Yes, you can do this (I do it every day). Smart thing to do would be to ensure your account has NA-MOU (National Access - Minutes of Use) on it first, then you know it'll work and it uses your plan minutes.
There are no guarantees Verizon will keep allowing this without the purchase of a data plan, but my suspicion is that for occasional use (i.e., don't stay connected all day long) it's not that big a deal. You *are* using your minutes, after all - just as if you were in a phone call.
Can't speak to VPN.

I thought with Moto/Verizon crippling the phone it couldnt be used for a connection?? If this can be done, how hard is it??

LOL - people have been getting this wrong for so long it hurts. Verizon doesn't allow OBEX with the V710 (among some of the other more obscure BT profiles that most people don't need). Headset, Handsfree, and DUN (a.k.a. DIAL UP NETWORKING) all work beautifully with NationalAccess.
How hard is it:
1. Pair the phone and UX
2. set up a data connection to dial #777 and use <your10digitnum>@vzw3g.com as the username and "vzw" as the password
3. connect
really simple. Just have to BE ABSOLUTELY SURE YOU HAVE NA-MOU on your account first, or you have to go in and change a programming menu setting to use qnc - but who wants to use qnc anyway, it's so slow! Supposedly NA-MOU is on all picture phone accounts anyway (or it's supposed to be) because I've heard that's the method your phone uses to connect and send pix messages.

I have this set up as well, only on the Telus Mobility network in Canada.
I was wondering how you guys handle email with this configuration. I use agendus mail, and I know that I can set it up to check mail evry XX minutes. I guess I have concerns about power consumption. If I have bluetooth on all the time, then I am really hurting the battery level.
Do you guys check mail manually?

Hey guys this is my first post but I have been following this forum religiously since I bought my UX50. I am very pleased with al the information available here and the help people like me can receive. I thought that all you guys deserve a big hand for that, keep up the good work.
Now back to the subject I also have a V710 on Telus network and want to set it up with my UX to check mail. Since you have set it up could you be kind enough to give me the step by step on it. I have called Telus a few times but they are just programmed to say that the only Blutooth device that V710 suports is headset and will not give me any assistance to set up email.
Thanks again

Heh Chadke,
I got mine setup this weekend! I don't know where you are at in the process or what you have done, but I start from the beginning.
If you haven't already done so, pair the phone and the UX.
On the UX:
1. Open preferences>bluetooth>trusted devices and add a trusted device.
On the phone
2. go to Settings>connection>bluetooth link>setup>find me
3. It will ask you for a password on the phone and the UX. Enter both with the same number.
4. enter a name and you should have the two paired.
I don't know what kind of an ISP you have but I am with Sympatico and this is how I have set it up. I have a DSL connection, but sympatico provides dial up numbers as well.
On the UX:
1. Go to preferences>bluetooth>choose enabled.
2. Go to preferences>connection>Sony BT to GSM (I know that this doesn't sound right, but it works...)
3. Then go to preferences>network. From the menu bar choose new. Add your ISP information. I'm with Sympatico and my settings look like this:
- service: sympatico
-user name: ISP user name
- Password: ISP p/w
- connection: Sony BT to GSM
- Phone: XXXXXXXXXX (mine has no spaces or dashes and no 1 in front.)
If you press connect from the network panel you should be good to go.
I think I have the process right, but if I have screwed it up, just drop a note. :)

Not a problem. I've received so much help around here, I'm just glad that I can make someone else's life a little easier for once.

I remember reading on the howard forum site that one would need the "NA-MOU (National Access - Minutes of Use) so extra billing wouldnt be involved. It also stated that if one had a camera phone, you should have that package already. Well, I have a camera phone so I called Verizon to see if I had that svc & they told me it was an extra monthly charge. So Im still debating on getting the 710. How much are you guys paying extra for the svc?? How many Mb's do you have monthly??

You do not need to pay anything extra if you follow the configurations on this site. You only use up minutes. And for me nights and weekends are free!! Anyway, get the phone and set up as dictated in another string and it works great.

Oh, ok. I just didnt want to get a $200-$300 bill unexpectedly. Like I said before, after talking to Verizon & they told me I didnt have the NA-MOU (National Access - Minutes of Use) & it would be extra, I changed my mind on getting a BT phone. I dont want an extra $30-$40 extra a month just for checking my email.
BTW, is there a way that Verizon would know that ones minutes are being used for BT surfing??
