Hi,
I'm a new member here and hoping for some help already! Luckily for me, Santa brought me a lovely T5 for Christmas. Now that I'm over the initial excitement, I need to transfer all my data from my current T2. I have a plan and would be grateful for any comments. Firstly , a bit of background - I had a hard drive crash a couple of weeks ago and have not yet re-installed the Palm Desktop software. So my T2 has not been hotsynched for a couple of weeks.

Q1. Will I need to reinstall the Palm Desktop that came with the T2 or can I install the new desktop software and hotsynch my T2 using this?

I think that I only want to transfer my PIM data and then install all other software one by one to check fo incompatibility. I intend to install Uninstall Manager first to keep my T5 clean and tidy in the future.
So the plan is to hotsynch the T2, using whichever Palm Sesktop software is appropriate. Also run BackupBuddy onto a card on the T2. Then install the T5 update onto the T5 (even though I can't get the shortcut.9 to tell me the date of manufacture.) Then install Uninstall Manager. I'm not sure what comes next. I'm using DateBk5 so -

Q2. Should I install this before transferring the PIM application using the instructions on Palm One's website regarding
upgrading to a new handheld?

I think that all that would be left would be to install all other applications one by one. Also, I plan on keeping my T2 as my 5-year-old son enjoys playing games on it and I want to keep him away from my T5! I will be keeping the same user name as this is the name in which I registered the programs I have bought. Will I be able to hotsynch both the T2 and the T5 and keep them both up-to-date or will that cause any problems?
If anyone can give me any advice regarding all of this then I would be very grateful, as you can see I'm a bit confused.

Regards
Clare

Look here (http://tankerbob.com/palm/pda_migration.htm) for a migration tutorial.

If you don't wish to keep the same user name on the T2 that you give to your son, you can use MultiUserHack5 to program the proper username for applications requiring the old SyncID, while changing the actual SyncID. This could protect you in the even he manages to plop the T2 into a cradle and hit the sync button.

Of course, legally, you can only have those applications registered on one machine at a time so whatever you give your son you wouldn't be using yourself on the T5...

Hi
Thanks, TankerBob, for the link. You make it seem easy! I think I would prefer to load everything except PIM data from scratch as I have learned a lot in the year I have had my T2 and I know better now what to load and what not to.
Wollombi, I didn't quite understand the way I would use MultiUserHack5. I would prefer not to have to change User ID if that was possible. I get your thinking on the second paragraph but actually the point of giving my son the T2 (under supervision!) is that I would want to keep on it things like PDA Playground etc. which I don't want to install on the T5 as I don't want to let him use it (the T5) in a moment of weakness. It would be handy, however, to still have up-to-date PIM data on the T2 too for which I could presumably just use the built-in software.

I am still unsure whether I can use the same User ID on both if someone could help me on that please?

I am still unsure whether I can use the same User ID on both if someone could help me on that please?I haven't thought through all the implications, but my first reaction after years of watching Palms is that it is not a good idea to use the same username on different handhelds. They are not made to work that way. Too much risk of things going wrong.

Re. having the same username on the T|2 and T|5 - You can do this but Palm Desktop won't let you sync - I tried this with my T665 and TH55, but the Palm Desktop will notice that they are different devices (Different serial no.s?) and complain.

It's not a good idea anyway as things like Preferences could be carried across if you accidentally HotSynced the wrong one, and that can royally bugger up a Palm (I can attest to this from then I just did a bulk copy of my stuff from a T625 to a T665!)

If you JUST want to keep a copy of the PIM and Datebook etc. info without needing to change anything and sync it back, you could just beam the MemoDB, TodoDB, DatebookDB and AddressDB files from the T|5 to the T|2 using a program like FileZ, but this is a bit of a hassle.

Re:The MultiUserHack thing - It's handy because it would let you have multiple UserIDs - For instance, if you registered your old programs under the "Alice" User ID. With the new T|5, you now want your T|5 to be called "Alice" and your old T|2 to be called "Bob" but also want to have the old programs on "Bob".

Now, normally those programs wouldn't work on "Bob", but with the MultiUserHack you can set it up so that although the T|2 HotSyncs as "Bob", it changes to "Alice" while running those other programs, which would allow them to work.

You might have to read that through a few times to get it, I'm not too great at explaining stuff like this ;)

Thanks, Cyker, that's a lot clearer. It had occurred to me since last posting that, as it would be relatively few apps (mostly kids' games) that I would want to leave on the T2 that maybe I would change the User ID on that if I could get new codes for the ones I paid for. But I would like to try the MultiUserHack idea first. I tried to Google it but can't find it anywhere. Anyone know where I can find it?
Your idea of just beaming any new data would probably work OK as it would only probably be new contacts and diary info I would want to keep updated and I could probably keep on top of that by putting, say, T2 as a code for every new entry on the T5 and then later do a search to find anything I hadn't beamed yet.
Thanks, everyone for your help, so far, the mist is beginning to clear!
